I have just started towing a light weight caravan using a '93 960 saloon. The car has self-levelling suspension as standard and had replacement units fitted a few years ago. Generally these work fine except that the car does sit low after a few days on the drive - but soon rights itself to a reasonable ride height.
The caravan I am towing is a 2 wheel / 13.5 foot unit with total laden weight just about 14 cwt. Tow bar weight is quite low - I can easily lift the hitch a few inches and even move the van with the jockey wheel off the ground.
My problem....
When towing the car rides very low with the tail down. - even when just 2-up with little extra weight in the boot.
When running at normal speeds without the 'van everything is OK and on rough roads I even get a high tail ride.
Has anyone any experience of trailer towing with the levelled suspension, had similar experiences or got an explanation?
