Fuel Filter

Hello,

My car, a 2005 S40i front wheel drive is up for it's 120,000 service. According to the maintenance schedule, the fuel filter needs replacement. I called about 4 different shops to price out the service. 2 quotes i received were normal quotes for all the things needed to be done, and two other quotes I received said that the fuel filter is inside the gas tank and they don't need to be replaced, which I'm puzzled with. Why would 2 shops not mention anything about the fuel filter, and I received a pretty average quote, while the other 2 are telling me that the fuel filter is basically not replacable?

Can anyone shed a light on this for me?

The ones who told you it was replaceable didn't check. The ones who told you it's in the tank and integrated with the fuel pump are correct. Check your maintenance schedule more closely - Engine codes 38, 39, 64 and 68 are like this. Depending on where you bought it, your 2.4i is a 38 or 39. (T5's are 68) You can check for yourself by looking for this code in your VIN digits 6 and 7.

That said, you can in fact replace the filter, but it's a big job involving removing the exhaust (and AWD shaft if necessary), draining and removing the tank, pulling the fuel pump and putting it all back. Unless you had contaminated fuel, it's unnecessary.

Yes, in fact my engine code is 38 so the filter is not replaceable. The maintenance booklet is sort of tricky, where they mention that fact on the first page, but not the second page where the 120, 000 column is at. Thank you again for your reply.
