My friend is buying a 740GL 2.4 4 cylinder, the mechanic says it needs new upper radiator hose as well as strut rod bushing. How hard is to replace the upper radiator hose? And the strut rod bushing, is that real? I'm used to veedubs and I have never heard of strut rod bushing.

The strut rod bushing is a very common wear item on the 700 series. It doesn't last very long (maybe 30-50K) and it messes up the alignment, stability, and handling when it's severely worn. Poly urethane replacements are available from FCP Groton, and the bushings can be replaced without the use of a press.

The upper rad hose should be easy. You can drain off some coolant from the lower rad hose and then replaced the upper hose without making too much of a mess. You might as well replace the thermostat, which sits in the small housing that's bolted to the head where the upper rad hose connects to the engine (two 10mm nuts, I believe. Don't overtighten when reinstalling). Make sure you get a rubber seal for the t-stat, and install it with the air hole on the top side.

See my links page in my sig for good sources of new parts, including FCP Groton, gapa.com, and Import Parts Specialists (IPS). Also, get a catalog from IPD because they have lots of good tech tips and diagrams, but keep in mind that their prices tend to be higher. The catalog from RPR is great too, with many diagrams, but I believe it's $5.

Good luck.

edit: I forgot to mention that if you're going to just flush the cooling system (a good idea with a used car), there is a drain fitting on the passengers side of the engine block, below the exhaust manifold.
