Although I am not new to Volvos ('76 240 wagon, '86 740 wagon and '96 850 turbo wagon), my current stable only includes Audis (sorry, no flames please!). I am looking at a '91 740 turbo and wondering what the best engine performance mods were for that car/year. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
Raise the boost with a manual boost controller and install a 2.5" or 3" mandrel bent free flowing exhaust and you'll gain quite a bit of power. A camshaft upgrade will bring a little more, and with a rising rate fuel pressure regulator and water injection, you could run more boost. The only problem is that the '90-95 turbo engine used a small turbo meant to spool up fast and give good low end performance. To really make a lot of power, you'll eventually need a bigger turbo.
Check out turbobricks.org, especially the message board for performance advice.
http://www.dawesdevices.com/ for the MBC, or build your own. http://engstrom.net/scstore/ can supply a nice exhaust system from BSR in Sweden, or have one custom built.
Unitek in Sweden has a good cam for the turbo, but MVP in Oregon is also designing a cam. Cherry Turbos in Ontario, Canada does great work with the Mitsu turbo on the Volvos. They also build upper and lower chassis braces, which you can buy from IPD.
Many of these places are on my 240 links page below.
