So I have been given a 1986 740 Turbo Wagon. This sounds like a good thing, but it has a catch - the engine threw a connecting rod - punctured the oil pan - the engine's dead. The rest of the car is in fine shape though - the body is straight, minor door dings and such, although with faded and peeling paint and some cracked trim, like the grille and taillights. The interior is in good shape - only one small tear on one of the rear seats - drivers/passengers seats are flat but have no wear spots or tears - dash is in fine shape. No headliner though.
So the question is - rebuild or part out.
Option 1: Rebuild and keep to drive as an errands/utility car.
I am wondering how hard it would be to replace the engine - I have been quoted a used complete engine for $550 shipped so far, which sounds fair. It also needs two tires, a wheel, and the two taillight lenses. That would restore it to running and usable condition. Probably $800 total investment.
Option 2: Part out car
The seats are good, nearly all interior trim pieces are there and in good shape. Engine accessory pieces are probably fine. Two 15" turbo (Draco style i think) rims are in good shape. Probably a few hundred dollars possible income with much less labor.
Any suggestions?
