My #22 Blue V70P* is experiencing a new issue... whining while under power. Under acceleration, a very high pitched whine is emanating from the what sounds like the power-plant. I doubt its a transmission issue as the whining stops if I take my foot off the accelerator at speed. Push the gas, and the whine returns. Almost sounds like the turbo.
Has anyone experienced this? I am bringing her to Volvo tomorrow, but figured I'd post in case anyone else experienced this.
If it is mostly just off idle throttle, I have noticed the AC condenser motor can whine pretty loudly from time to time. Easy to verify, just shut off the AC. If it goes away, there you go. Volvo dealer said it is fairly common, and replacing the unit isn't necessarily a fix.
Good call, and I will look into that this afternoon, but the AC hasn't been on in 2 months (A little cold for that here in the winter wonderland NorthEast... only use it to defrost).
Is there no fix??? That would be pretty annoying every time I use the AC...
If it's the compressor or belts that's causing the noise, it makes no difference if you are using it for defrosting in the winter or cooling in the summer. In other words, yours has been on. Turn it off manually to confirm or eliminate it as a cause of the sound.
Yes... it seems like full power, and it is there in S-mode as well (but hidden a bit by the symphony-like exhaust!). Will know more tomorrow when the techs get a look at it...
Ok... so I found out it has not anything to do with belts, at least according to the P* trained techs. According to them, it is the Turbo. The techs connected the VIDA analyzer and tested the turbo, and results were "no faults shown". They test drove it, and confirmed boost was as expected (it is pulling great). They then sent audio/video from the inside of the cabin to Volvo USA Tech. Volvo Tech also said it was the turbo, and that from an acoustic perspective, it was "normal boost noise". My question is, then why was it silent prior to this? What changed? Can I expect this to get worse until it fails? Has anyone else experienced "turbo noise"??
I had an Audi A4 Avant, and never had the turbo noise...
Turbos always make noise, more or less.
If I have my windows open and drive, for example, alongside a wall, I can here the P's Turbo, even in S or M, when the Ferrita makes the music
Yes!!! My only quibble was that there was no noise previously... and now I hear it. I used to hear it on the Audi as TomOldi said... along a wall. I hear this now, in the cabin even while listening to music. Anyone else???
Maybe you're just leaning on it a bit more now that you've had the car for a couple of months and it's a little more broken in?
Also, maybe it's something that is somewhat weather or temperature dependent? Single digit or low double digit temps can cause cars to make some strange sounds.
My bet would have been a faulty pulley or belt but that's been ruled out.
So I'll just offer this one up while we're all diverging and brainstorming what could cause this.
I remember with my car (S60R), turbo noise suddenly became very loud in the cabin once. It happened to be a grommet of some sort, used around the steering column, I think, that got dislodged and was letting noise from the engine compartment into the cabin. All they did was to push it back in and it was quiet again. Has happened to several of the "R" guys over the years. Just another thing to check and rule out.
So after discussing this with the team at Stamford Volvo, one of the head techs from Volvo USA was called in. He arrived today, looked and listened to my whining P*, and lo and behold, I am getting a new turbo unit. As best as he can tell, probably due to a slight manufacturing defect, the vanes in the turbo are causing the whining sound. There is no physical contact, and the turbo pressure is still good, but the lead tech said that over time, the sound will get worse. So they ordered me a new Borg Warner. Will be here in a month (apparently, it is being built, will go to Sweden to make sure it meets the Volvo spec, and will then be shipped here).
So I listened to your Youtube, but got very little volume... any way you could re-record? As far as the turbo, now a year later, no issues whatsoever. In fact, I had totally forgotten about it until reading this thread. #22 is running sweet. Still, by far, the best car I have owned. Although the new V90P* could sway me!!
Good to hear Volvo is standing behind their Polestar product! Best wishes on the new Turbo resolving the issue.
