Don Beyer Volvo, with three locations in Northern Virginia, and the Washington D.C. Region of the Sports Car Club of America announced today that Don Beyer Volvo would sponsor the Don Beyer Volvo National Races. The event, to be held April 7 and 8, 2001 at Summit Point Raceway, will feature the first visit of the Volvo Historic Series to Summit Point Raceway. Don Beyer Volvo is a long supporter of DC Region and we are very grateful for their willingness to support grassroots motor sports.

In addition to sponsoring the weekend, Don Beyer Volvo is supporting a Chicken and Rib dinner for drivers, crew and workers on Saturday night of the event. Don Beyer Volvo will be displaying cars and will supply a pace car for the event.

One of the highlights of the weekend will be the first visit of the Volvo Historic Series to a DC Region event. The series, sponsored by Volvo of North America, features vintage cars prepared to 1973 competition rules. The series usually brings Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros and European sports cars from the 1960's and early 1970's.

What are the facilities like at Summit Point from the spectator's point of view? I'm almost embarassed to say that I've never been there even though I live less than 30 minutes from the track. Do they have grandstands or something similar? I checked out their website but there wasn't much information. What's the entry fee for spectators on events like this?

I've been to Summit Point raceway many times, but it's been a few years since I was last there, so I don't remember the area that well. I think there are at least 3 areas of grandstands, but again I'm not sure. Using the image below for reference, when we come through the main gate, we usually went left, down one of the access roads. On the picture where it says "access road" on the far left, I think there are grandstands right there. That's where I sat the last time I was there, which is nice because you're in front of the straight, but you can also see several of the turns to the right. There's also at least one place where you can cross over the track because I've got pictures of some Porsches taking a hard right hand corner and some of them look like they're lifting a front wheel, so I think it was taken at the sharp turn in the upper right corner of the picture below. I think you can go almost anywhere around the track, and still be able to see the action. One other thing, the last time I was there the access roads (dirt & gravel mainly) were pretty rough and uneven, so don't plan on driving a car with nice wheels or low profile tires around on the access roads. My dad's '70 beetle was perfect because it was easy to park in the limited space along the access roads, and when needed, anyone could stand on the roof for a better view. Otherwise, the entrance area is paved, and there should be plenty of parking. I don't remember what the cost was.

My wife and I cruised down yesterday. It was an interesting event. Volvos included in the vintage heat were an Amazon, 142, and a P1800. There wasn't much of a Volvo Club showing (must have happened Sat), but there were some great looking Volvos floating around anyway as well as a new M3, a Ferrari 360, a Ferrari F355 that managed to go off the course and do some damage and some other cool things. I'll have an article with gallery up by next week.
