I just got this 88 740 and it has a bad case of "blow by" I'm geting oil comeing out of the oil cap and going all over the top of the valve cover. any sujestions.
Also, this car rides smouthly but at 60-70 mph It begins to make a lot of vibratcion noieses and so forth. After you let off the gas the noies gets worse till your back dow to 60mph. The transmishion in this car in a automatic and is a littel sticky. thanks.
Re: 88 740 gle with oil driping out and onto the heders (Arnie)
The oil filler cap gaskets get brittle and turn plastic-like over time from the oil & heat. However, if the gasket looks soft, then it's probably a PCV issue. Check out the flame trap, flame trap housing, and associated plumbing. On the non-turbo models, there's a black plastic breather box on the engine block, down below the intake manifold. If you look down between the #3 & #4 intake manifold runners (two closest to the firewall), you should see the flame trap housing with one large hose (~1/2") and one small hose coming from it. It's difficult to see, and even harder to get to, but if you can remove it, check for blockages and clean it out, you may stop those oil leaks.
The 740 series has front control arm "stay bushings" that wear out and cause excessive front end play, so you get vibration under braking especially. Might be time for those to be replaced.
Re: 88 740 gle with oil driping out and onto the heders (towerymt)
I purchesed a new ruber gasket and leakeing has stoped thanks.
As for the vibration, When I put it in park and reve it up to 2000-2500 RPMs it start geting really bad. the car has 170000 + miles on it. Coud it be the timeing belt is a littel off and just neads a tune up ?? thanks for your time.
