They generally hold up very well, to 250K miles or so, it is reputed. The wife has 223K miles on hers.
There are some rubber check balls in the valve body that wear - one inparticular - and this causes the somewhat jerky shifting at low speeds. They weren't paragons of smoothness when new, though, so I don't know if its worth it to get it rebuilt unless you have to.
The designation for the autos is such:
AW70 - NA 240, 740, 940
AW70L - later NA 740, 940, 'L' indicates a lockup torque conveter
AW71 - Turbo 240, 740, 940
AW72 - 16V 740
ZF22 - some mid-production 700s. This tranny does not do well (needs special care & feeding) but has the advantage of being a true 4spd.
