Transmission reliability on a 1994 940

Hello,

I just got my first volvo. A 1994 940 turbo, and wanted to know how well the transmissions hold out on them. The car jerks when shifting into gears.

I am new to the whole volvo scene and appreciate any responses. Also what's the overall reliability of the 1994 940's?

Thanks

Sounds like you got a normal one.

They generally hold up very well, to 250K miles or so, it is reputed. The wife has 223K miles on hers.

There are some rubber check balls in the valve body that wear - one inparticular - and this causes the somewhat jerky shifting at low speeds. They weren't paragons of smoothness when new, though, so I don't know if its worth it to get it rebuilt unless you have to.

The designation for the autos is such:
AW70 - NA 240, 740, 940
AW70L - later NA 740, 940, 'L' indicates a lockup torque conveter

AW71 - Turbo 240, 740, 940
AW72 - 16V 740

ZF22 - some mid-production 700s. This tranny does not do well (needs special care & feeding) but has the advantage of being a true 4spd.
