I don't spend too much time over here. I've been FWD for a few years now. Well, AWD now... Anyway. My M-I-L is driving my old 940 GLE. She keeps it maintained by the dealership and had a major servicing in May. The car has just over 200k kms. Today on her way home, the car just up and died at a stop light. No warning, nothing. She tried starting it again and it wouldn't even turn over. Of course, being my MIL, I can't guarantee that she took it out of drive. She let it sit for a bit and tried it again. It cranked but wouldn't fire. The tow truck took about 40 minutes and after that time she cranked it again but no fire. She had it towed and it's sitting at the dealer now.
I'm betting on a failed fuel pump or clogged lines. The only other thing could be spark, so I'm wondering if anyone has heard of any failures in ignition.
$1500?! Yikes!! Perhaps a bit late of my followup, but if not, you may want to get a second opinion. It might be something as simple as a radio supression relay or power pack.
A dealer's service is only as good as the service manager's personal diagnostic skills. Some folks get lost when a computer can't spit out as an error code because your car is perceived as being "too old".
Me ... my youngest Volvo is a '91 745Ti/M46/209k miles.
-- Kane ... when you're still on the original powertrain (clutch included), it's young!
If it were mine, I would have had a pretty close look at it first. Since it was already at the dealer, it was up to them. They had the computer swapped out and car delivered to her work by mid afternoon. I'm always suspicious, so I have to wonder the likelihood of them having a fuel computer to a 13 year old car just kicking around, but you never know. The dealer has always been very good to her and hse loyal to them, so I'm hoping they didn't rip her off. I guess we'll never know...
If it really is a GLE, with the 16V motor, and the timing belt broke, then you could have bent valves while you cranked it. That would add up to a large repair bill.
