I have a 1991 745 5speed turbo and was thinking about taking out original air box and putting a cone with it boxed in does anyone have any feedback if they do more harm than good??
thanks Mike
Won't do any harm, but considering the size of the original filter, it's not going to do a whole lot of good either. Just remove the degraded foam inside the air box and be done with it.
FWIW, I wouldn't let a K&N filter near my '91. They let in too much crap.
-- Kane ... OTOH, my '86 has one. $20 was cheap, and I don't care that much about that car.
You can modify the existing air intake for summer use. Know that annual inspection and cold weather will require a full return to stock.
1. Remove the fresh air flap and thermostat from the air box.
2. Remove the screens for the mass air meter.
3. Disconnect the exhaust manifold pre-heat hose and re-route the loose end to a point just behind and above the front air dam (spoiler). Secure.
4. Confirm that there are ABSOLUTELY NO air leaks in the intake system ANYWHERE!!! (Including that flexible intake hose with accordion folds - if on your car)
Now tool around Avon hunting for FWD wannabees with Folgers exhaust tips!
