So far we have changed everything conceivable item in the drive line (u-joints, tailshaft busshing, center support bearing, etc etc) but have not done the shimming experiment referred to as a possible fix from a previous Volvo Technical Service Bulletin, -----before we start the shimming "experiment" we would like to get some further insights from anyone who may know more about it.
Re: 1989 760 Turbo Sedan Drivesahft vibration (rdcosta)
Make sure the motor and trans mounts are perfect - not just by looking but lift the engine/trans with a jack (carefully) and check for separated mounts.
If you are certain the u-jnts are installed correctly (no needles trapped in the caps) and the center support bearing/bush are the correct size then remove the ENTIRE drive shaft assembly (don't undo the ujnts) and have a reputable drive shaft shop mount the ENTIRE unit on a balance machine (this will require a special jig for the center mount) and spin the whole deal then WELD balance plates on the shaft as needed for a perfect spin.
BEFORE you remove the shaft from the balance machine mark EVERY component for correct re-assembly (including the yolks). If you use white paint (I use die stamps on a hard spot) be sure the surface is clean and give the paint time to dry.
This is a lot of trouble and $$$ but you will have a smooth Volvo for many years/miles down the road.
