Check Engine Liight

Greetings!

When I started up my 1996 960 this evening the "check engine" light came on. I shut it down, waited a minute and restarted. It fired, coughed, shuddered and stalled. Then the dash lit up like a Christmas tree.

It will still turn over and fire, but immediately dies.

I know that "Check engine" can mean many things ("emissions problem," "I am about to explode," etc.), but this sure sounds like "fuel pump" to me.

Any ideas or experience?

Thanks.

Re: Check Engine Liight (flseminarian)

Looks like an early Christmas for your Volvo mechanic.

Before the first episode were there any indications of calamity?

Seems like the fuel delivery would have stumbled a bit before complete shut-down.

The fuel pumps are not easy to check with the engine off except for proper circuitry in the electrics. Maybe the OBD will dump as the check engine light usually triggers a code or two.

I did a 500+ miler yesterday (west Texas) and the '96 965 behaved just fine.

Now you've got me frettin'!
