This is my first post here. I'm a Subaru owner, but my wife drives a 91 740 wagon that we bought last year. It has been a great car. However, the auto transmission is in need of a rebuild, so I'm not for sure the best route to take. I'm thinking of finding a mail order rebuilder and buy one w/ a warranty--any thoughts on that? Not many shops in my area say they work on Volvo trannys and the one quote was not guaranteed to stay at the $1200 he told me. I also considred searching for a used but lower mileage tranny from a salvage car. Our car has over 200,000 miles on it (can't get aggrivated w/ an auto tranny that takes you past 200K) but I'm not for sure how long a Volvo tranny from these years typically lasts. I'd appreciate any helpful input any of you have to offer. Thanks!
Many options here - Volvo dealer (very $$$ but with warranty), franchise transmission repair place ($$ and limited warranty), reman/used unit found on the internet and shipped to a shop of your choice for install or you pull a trans from a junker and self-install (not recommended).
The new trans will need to be compatable with the electrics in your wife's Volvo.

What electrics would those be? It's not electronically controlled, so I'm not sure what you mean. Crank position sensor? Yes, has one of those...
You need a AW71 from a 4cyl Turbo volvo. They're not hard to come by, and they last a long time. A low mileage junkyard trans with decent looking fluid would probably be the cheapest way to get the car back on the road. If you're going to put $1000+ worth of transmission in the car, consider what else it needs, and how long you plan to own it.
Thanks for the input. Yeah, my jaw dropped at the price for a warranted rebuilt unit. I found one at a somewhat nearby salvage yard from a wrecked car--same year--that has 60,000 miles. Guaranteed for 30 days. They want $250, so I'll probably jump on that.
Is doing an auto tranny swap on a Volvo difficult? I've done a couple tranny swaps on Chevrolets before (one manula and one auto), but that was several years ago and with the supervision of my dad, the ex-mechanic. Thanks again.
Consider doing a full service on the used unit before install. Good time to check oil seals on the back of the engine and new trans/motor mounts. Be sure to mark all drive components before removal and return same to original positions (drive shaft, etc.). Use correct AT fluid!
