Hi all have a simple yet all too varied question. I like to do my own basic stuff on my cars. The NA 744 I read, and it proved right that plain old NGK plugs work great and last well. Better then the Bosch ones that had been in it when I bought it used. Now I as well have a 965 and am needing to just change the plugs for a base line start on things that are new and I know are not going to fail soon. I am not dissing BOSCH but have never really liked them very well. I know for a fact that SAAB's will not run on anything else. I have always found NGK (both platium and non platium depending on application) in the past in what ever I was driving to perform well and give little if any trouble ever. And the vech ran better too. Please if you all will weigh in on what you have used and or not used in your 2.9-3.0 I6's. I am not really looking for answers from rally car users or those that slalom thier cars or pikes peakers. Just good every day use data so I can decide if the lack of info on other choices for this engine (I6 only not the 4cyl please) is true and the BOSCH are the best that work the best. If no data is present or forth coming (been there done that replies) then I will just I guess go and do my own and then tell you what I found out for your future use. But if anyone has done it already, then I will thank you in advance and not spend the time and $$ to find out what you did or go thru trial and error route.
Thanks again in advance to all those that might reply on this matter for me.
Re: Been there done that, this works best Spark Plugs (gdill2)
Thanks gdill2. Did you ever use reg NGK's in it or Plat NGK's? I was looking at the Iridiums and at @$7 that is way too $$$$$$$$$$$$. Thou if they really do last for ever and make it run killer then I would go that way. Not adverse to spend $$ but thinking of the law of diminishing returns. $50+ for a set is silly with a set of NGK Plats going for $18-19, NGK lazer plats being little more still . I know dealers charge that for plain old bosch(used in YUGO's too) for a tuneup. THAT is why i do not buy plugs form a dealer.
Re: Been there done that, this works best Spark Plugs (gdill2)
Thanks gdill2 for the sites. But what just is meant by PERFECT RUNNING ORDER? It is a 96 965 with 126,000 on it. It has issues. But it idles well warm and revs well mostly all the time. Has no valve taps unless it sits for a week nor does it knock on startup or after. Cold here in SC is another story. It starts right up but has slight rough spots once it starts till it is warmed up a few mins. Especially when the electric air pumps still on. Have not seen NOR does my 744 or any Volvo do otherwise. Short of rebuilding the eng long block or doing a back to the future teleport to 96 and 1000 miles. What are you saying? Confused.
Never had this much trouble replacing stock plugs with upgrades before. And for sure not on the 80 265/86 764TI/91 744.
Re: Been there done that, this works best Spark Plugs (Nato740)
The 960 will start/run just fine on a $1.98 spark plug (six).
Other issues may be a dirty throttle body and imperfect fuel injectors.
