I need to replace the driver's side rear view mirror on my '91 945, but all the vendors selling on ebay have them listed as 92+. Is this just an error in labeling, or should I be looking for a mirror from a 740?
Based on my experience, the 1991 940SE definitely has a different mirror motor than the 1992+ 940/960's. One of the junkyards told me that the 1991 740's also use the same mirror.
The easiest way to tell the different is that the 1991-specific mirrors have four wires going to the motor (including the BLACK wire), and the mirror glass fastens onto the motor with a white plastic locking ring. The later mirror glass locks on with black plastic tabs. If you move the mirror glass all the way to one angle on the motor, you should be able to see inside enough to identify these details.
The dealer tells me that the mirror *glass* used on the 1991 mirrors is common with the power/heated mirrors used on the 740's and the later 240's, and is slightly smaller than the glass on the 1992+ 940/960's.
Good luck. I've had a nightmarish time with the mirrors on my 1991 940SE.
