    I have one.
There is nothing crazy about it.
It is just more fun than the lazy automatic driving.

Fun... with a diesel? The only thing you want to do is shift as fast as possible so the noise is limited as much as possible.

EPIC FAIL! No XC60 for me! That nav setup and pod thing just isn't going to cut it for me.

    Absolutely .

Epic fail = the big black nasty radar sensor in the middle of the front grille. Absolutely one of the ugliest things I have seen on the front of a car since the Aztek.

    Nobody else has mentioned this?!?!?

In the S80 / XC 70, at least it's behind the bars of the grille. It still looks bad there. In this car, it takes the place of the grille, it's TERRIBLE!!!

Well, where else could that radar box be put and not sacrifice accuracy? And for the CitySafe system, I think it needs to be at the "edge" of the car to detect the potential pedestrian impacts. The S80/V70/XC70 don't have that feature; which is probably why their system can be recessed a bit more.

But the dash layout is nice; just the nav and the pod..... blah

Where else? How about better integrated into the grille? Or hidden behind something radar transparent inside the bumper?

Joe; keep in mind that the "target" of Volvo's CitySafe system is smaller; which means that it needs to be as close as possible to the EDGE of the vehicle. If you put it further behind the grill; then its FURTHER BEHIND the edge of the vehicle and that will most likely compromise/reduce its effectiveness.

Its the same principle as back-up sensors. If you put them on your trunk lid (or hatch) which is about 3" inset, then will they be as effective as if they were mounted on your bumper? I think not.

I'm an engineer, you don't need to explain how it works.

However, you do need to explain why it couldn't look like this:

    Or something similar.

Even on the S80, the grille bars are still there. Not much better, but a LITTLE better:

Please tell me that this "city safe" crap is an option...I live in the country, and this thing has to be safe on country roads, and be able to absorb the impact of Rudolph if he decides to stand in the middle of the road..

    I think it's a decent looking crossover....

The trouble is, that dodgy setup would really put be off ever buying one. Look at where the 12v outlet is too ! All sorts of shapes that just don't integrate at all. Nasty...

I noticed that too and my thoughts exactly. More and more, I think the XC60 is just being rushed to market.

    not rushed in the slightest!!!

volvo had an XC50 design which was close to the Freelander in design but that car wasnt the right sort of thing for volvo so the project was cancelled and the XC60 started a fresh. project started in 2003. volvo has been critised by Ford for taking too long on the XC60...not rushed at all! volvo taking their time to carefully design and test everything. see interviews with designers to see why the dash is the way it is!

  25. 09-18-2008 01:27 PM #60
So just why is the dash the way it is?

If it's not rushed and they had that much time to design that dash, then that is sad. Nothing about that dash looks like it was carefully designed except maybe the CD slot. I wonder what percentage of the design time was spent on the trim around that slot. The one thing that year after year since they started the XC60 design, sales have constantly been going down in. I can't remember the last time I used a CD in any car (even the rentals when I travel). I think CD sales are at their lowest point in 10years.

I've read and seen various articles and drawings about the XC60 through it's design. There were lots of hand drawn pics of the dash. NONE had a pod on top. The rest of the car may have been well thought out, but IMO the dash looks rushed.

Kind of reminds me how Volvo would justify the ****box tranny in the XC90 T6 - the engine was so powerful that it didn't need the extra gear.

    Right.

  28. 09-19-2008 05:43 AM #63
not everyone has Ipods.. good to have Cd player and mp3 player connectivity....which volvo has. I like the interior

the Xc90 had/has minidisc player. that was unusual when it came out..but minidiscs are fading away now...

First time I have seen the non-Nav dash. It looks even worse than ever in that view.
I am happy that I am not the only one who feels this way...

I love my XC70's dash. I am simply speachless that Volvo could get this so wrong...

With that "pod" on the dashtop, where does the centre channel speaker go now ?

Picture was posted on the Dutch Volvo-forum.nl. I placed this picture in my gallery to post it on this site. If you want it removed just say so.

I don't want it to be posted. I don't want it on the other forums either. You can tell the person who posted it on volvo-forum.nl that it's my picture and it's NOT ok for him to use it. Copyright...
