Pod thing looks even worse up close. Cut a hole in the dash, then add layers of plastic all for a small LCD screen. Why not just craft the center stack to be 1" taller and blend into the dash?
Just dumb.
Thankx for the pics, car looks good! Could you compare the size of the NAV screen to other volvo cars, like the s80; whats the size? It doesnt look too big since the screen doesnt fill in the box its recessed in...
I didnt notice the ACC bracket in the grill while viewing the pics...
Especially with The Pod perched on top of it.Was there no way to better integrate the radio display? Make the center stack taller? Shape the dash around it?
That's a big hole in the dash plus a big plastic shell just for an LCD to tell you what radio station is playing.
I know I keep asking this question, but no answers yet...Why not just make the center stack taller, with room both both the Nav and radio displays, then blend the back of it into the dash?
You would still have a blank space with no Nav, but at least the overall appearance would be much more integrated.

Idiocy.

I think a taller center stack would ruin the flow. Excluding the pod and what's in the stack, it's a very nice design. I love center stacks that are slightly angled towards the driver.
The real solution would be for volvo to design a nav system that can display other data from the car. Then the pod could go away, and all cars, with or without nav would basically be the same. They'd still have the same screen there (as a plus, people could consider buying a rear camera without nav). Then nav would just be a matter of plugging a brain in somwhere out of site. The screens really don't cost that much money anymore.
I bet more people would be willing to pay a little extra to get a rear backup camera if they could without having to pay for nav. It seems a lot more are NOT inclined to pay extra for nav.
I see more and more models from other manufacturers that are coming out with designs that allow for rear backup camera WITHOUT needing nav. What a concept....

Maybe 2011 model will have updated, integrated nav and a speaker grill in place of the pod.

The design is growing on me. I still don't like the huge pig-nose front logo or bumper, and the way the white part of the tail lights look remind me of The Scream for some reason. On the Swedish site, the night view of the tail lights remind me of the YCC concept, with its organic looking curved LEDs that melt into and don't look like individual dots. Put a diesel with start/stop in it and I'll take one!The interior is appealing, even with the strange 2nd screen on the dash. I'm glad the curved headrest hasn't been replaced with a new design. Its too classic.
Take a photo of a nav system and stick it on the blanking plate. Jobs a good 'un.
I was reading a review by another poster and I would also like to add that the steering wheel does not push away as far as I would like, and it looks wierd with the steering shaft sticking out far out of the dash.![]()
Stunning car externallyhowever I must say I don't like the new centre stack design, hope this isn't the way all future Volvo's are going!

It's great seeing that screen popup from the dashboard

It is attractive, but I think they should've kept it more similar to the front-end of the concept as well as the flared out fenders. The concept definitely looks more aggressive. However, I do like the tail lights better on the production model over the concept. I also prefer the flushed door handles.

I feel the rear lights could do with being bigger. It has a somewhat "pin cushion" effect to it at the moment. I'm not comfortable with it.
Really like the brown-and-tan interior. Same for the black wheel & shifter (vs. tan).Center stack would look great with a dark aluminum or carbon fibre overlay.
The Pod is truly awful.

Why don't they show the V O L V O label on it...
2007 XC70
2004 S60 2.5T AWD
Probably because the car isn't officially out in the US yet.

Had a XC70 when the show debuted; a 2008 XC70 before they were introduced; and now a XC60. Don't forget that Orson also had a C70 a season or two ago.

Also saw it at DC auto show. Agree it looks better than in photos.Except The Pod. Looks bad in photos, but its actually worse. Seems very outsize and disruptive to the flow of the interior & dash design. All for a small radio display.
Mistake.
Finally saw the XC60 at our dealer's event. Looks better in person from the outside. I really liked the 19" gray rims. No power tailgates on any models. All had nav.I still don't like the 'pod'. It's not any worse or any better. It just ruins the whole flow of the dash. Just looks so out of place. And of course, we had the nav there to help break up that space which does help some. Otherwise the interior is very nice.
Rear seat was a bit tight. My knees were NOT touching the back of the front seats. It was easy to get in. But not as easy to get out. Rear seat also felt a bit firm and uneven, maybe because of those built in child booster seats?
Blind spot was bigger than I'd like. Looking over shoulder to check for lane change, those fat rear hips block a lot of view.
One model had the step bars and it rubbed my pant legs when I got out. Just like the SRX issue that cadillac had to redesign their doors over.
My wife and I both still do not like that waterfall concept and the storage space behind it.
I don't think owners will have as much trouble with that cupholder cover as we have with the one in our XC90.
We both tested city safety, my comments here

What I think Volvo's bigger issue is going to be is the competition. When we pulled into the dealership, I ended up parking near a new Traverse. It was easy to compare the XC90 and Traverse and they just looked so similar in size. Seeing them head to head, we both actually liked the look of the traverse better. When we finally left the event, the couple with the Traverse was also leaving. I just wanted to briefly ask what he thought of it. Turns out he is a former XC90 owner (now mercedes), the Traverse was a rental and my brief question turned into him wanting to show off the Traverse to me, even offered to let me test drive it! (Which we've already done and it drive just fine). They loved the performance, efficiency, and features. The only strike against it compared to an XC90 was a "small" sense of less luxury that is more than made up for with all the other features and specs. That and the "chevy" nametag. He summarized it as just an incredible value.

Meh. Incredible value if you can get past the naff GM build quality. It does look pretty nice, except for that HUGE front end that's just sooooo tall. It's not really comprable to the XC90, it's a LOT bigger.
Volvo's problem with the XC60 is that it can't be sold on it's mileage rating, and it's coming out at exactly the wrong time and for too much money.
