Thread: Removing grill badges???

  1. 11-03-2008 09:08 AM #1
Has anybody out there removed their grill badges? I like the R badge, but want to remove the Volvo badge. How do you remove the grill? Does the grill look fine without the Volvo badge? Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks!

Some folks have been successful removing their grills from the front by using a spatula or bone tool to release the clips, I had to take out the top four bumper pins under the hood directly on top of the grill and reach in to undo the clips. It will not look good with the slash removed as there are smoothed spots and mounting holes for the grill to sit in.

Thanks for the reply! Great to know. Scratch that idea. I guessif I want a "simpler" grill I'll just need to order aftermarket...

Not the easiest thing to do but you can also add the R badge.

Could you please post a pic of the debadged factory grill so we can see what the attachment points look like? Thanks!

I removed the Volvo badge from my grill a few months ago and left the R. To remove it I used a Snap-On Hook tool designed for radiator hoses and was able to depress the tabs one at a time until grill came free. Then the tabs for the Volvo badge can be released. Note: They are very tight and getting that badge off w/o removing grill will end up breaking the grill.

The attachment points for the Slash are a bit of an eye sore and I haven't decided yet if I'm going to use a Dremel and cut them clean. If that is done then the Slash will not reattach. Now the more I think about it, the less likely I'll ever reattach the Slash so I might as well just modify the grill with the Dremel.

Sorry I don't have a current pic. If I get a chance I will post one.

    OK here you go

Looks like poop with the tabs.

It's not a cheap endeavour with the R, but on a previous car I got myself a 2nd grille to hack up and painstakingly replaced the sections in my original to create a full clean eggcrate design. Lots of sanding and detailing later and you could never tell the difference.

I'm saying that because you might find that once you dremel out those mounting tabs the actual shape of the grille won't be back there at all any more, you're going to need material to re-create it from scratch in a few spot.

They can't be "removed", they are part of the eggcrate, injection molded in one single pass. They have to be cut and trimmed, filled and smoothed.

Can you get the IPD one without black trim. (black mesh with a silver trim)

The IPD Grille is sweet but a bit too $$ for a simple mod like that.

And yes, I believe you can get the black grille with "chrome" surround, but it's not the silver aluminum color you might be looking for. I think the black with black trim looks sinisteR.

I don't think so. You can always paint it. Either way it will still be relatively cheep.

I did think that if I did remove the mounting areas that it may look a bit deformed. What did you use to fill in any material?
    I'm holding off for now.

Or what about this. Just dremeling the the corners where the Slash mounts and leaving the center in tack. Then cutting the Slashes off the badge just leaving the Volvo in the center? I think the is making me thinks too much tonight

I actually like the Volvo badge, but felt the R made the grill too cluttered. I always get "Hey, where's the R?"

    Sorry for the link...

Note that this is not on my Volvo, but a previous SVT Ford from years and years ago... I had filled the pieces I cut out by using real grille pieces from a 2nd grille I had handy. Took my time filing, fitting and gluing the pieces until I had something that looks completely stock, then primed, sanded and painted.

Of course that grille was later destroyed by some retard who backed out of a parking spot too enthusiastically - but I digress.

I'd def want to see how this looks because I may want to do it. Just got a new Dremel kit for christmas and need to try it out.

I like IPD's, but it is a bit pricey for what it is and I like the silver border. On a Saph Blk it brings together the silver headlamp bezels and it's just another thing that differentiates between an R and a regular S60.

I'm thinking about repainting the silver grill border and the slash as well to match my body paint. How difficult is the grill itself to remove? Anybody done this yet? If so, please show pics.

I cut out the top left and bottom right places where the Slash mounts.
Its not perfect but slightly cleaner look.
I left the center so far as it may take some extra doing to get a descent look. Plus if I still want to mount the badge easily, its still possible.

Note: I used a black Sharpie to color the exposed white plastic from the dremeling. Not a permanent solution by any means.
