Thread: Ready to buy... High miles on an '05 an issue?

  1. 09-26-2009 10:33 PM #1
Hello. I'm strongly considering purchasing a 2005 V70R. 1-owner, dealer serviced, etc. etc. Should I be overly worried about 122,xxx miles on the odometer? CarFax is clean... Dealer is asking $13,500. What's the reliability on the Rs?

    Thanks.

And an appropriate price as well. There are certain things that are considered upgraded about the 05 (painted trim, center console, head unit, few other things) but $13k is way too high. I would not even consider it unless it was $10k or less after negotiation.

Thanks guys for the insight. It may end up saving me some big bucks...

I had a VW GTI for a number of years, which I enjoyed, before selling it for a more practical family vehicle. Turns out my wife didn't like the SUV (that she chose), so now it's my turn. It looks like the v70r's are a good compromise.

Any more insights to the turbo component with high miles? I've read a couple of different places that they break down around this mileage, though my searches on this forum have yielded very limited results.

    Thanks again!

I think the suspension (Shocks and endlinks), radiator, and collar gear can and will all go out, possibly multiple times, before the turbo.

If the turbo is treated right (letting it warm up before punching it, and letting it cool down AFTER punching it), it should be fine.

Carfax doesn't mean much. As with any used car, the important thing is how the car was mainatined/serviced during the mileage. If possible, get the service history. And yes, price is way too high.

Yeah the price is way to high on that car. i bought my 2004 R with 80k miles on it and it was listed at 12,900 and i got it for 10,900. i would keep looking around but i dont see any problems with getting a high milage car if its the right price and seems well kept

Also, always a factor with cars at this mileage is if timing belt service has been done, if not its another $600-$800 right off the bat that MUST be done
