Hey guys,
I have an 04 s60R 6MT.
I've done some extensive searching and can't seem to find a direct answer, so I need a little help.
Right now my clutch is slipping like crazy, so it's clearly time for a new one. So instead of just getting a new stock clutch I thought i would put in the extra $$ and get something that could handle a little more horsepower that I would like to add to the car.
So I landed on the SPEC stage 3+ clutch sold at VIVA. The problem is, while I'm down there, I would also like to replace the slave cylinder, throw-out bearing and flywheel, and the SPEC 3+ only come with the clutch.
I'm wondering if a stock control cylinder (slave cylinder/TOB) (PN 31259446) will work with the SPEC 3+, AND if I can use an '94 850R single mass flywheel (PN 9454774) as well.
This is a lot of mixing and matching so let me know if it is possible.
Thanks you.
Are you referring to the super twin or mini twin, also it doesn't look like they sell them for the s60R?
The reason I was even looking at the 850R flywheel in the first place was because I had read that the stock dual mass flywheels in the R's are not very reliable when it comes to a higher performance clutch. Are their any single mass fly's that fit the s60R and SPEC clutch?

The super twin. They should be able to fix one up for you. I know a guy with a evo and he said its his most favorite non-stock clutch he has ever had. (he also has a 10 second volvo 740)
The single mass flywheel with the m66 is a custom application. The one guy that i have talked to that did it got spec to make him what was basically a 850R clutch kit with 23 splines.
I haven't ever really heard of any issues with the dual mass but the problem with the dual mass occurs when you have to install it without the pressure plate tensioning tool as seen here:
Pics were taken from volvospeed. the car is a 98 s70 t5m with a dual mass(first year for dual mass). His car currently has a gt35R on it. No issues from him that i have read.
Elliot,
I have the SPEC 2+ in mine with the stock flywheel. I can't say how well it would hold up to more hp since I don't trust the angle gear splines to hold up to much abuse. I don't think you have a choice on using any other slave cylinder/TOB. I wasn't able to find anything else.
Justin....did you mean dxd southbend?...that's where I got my 707 plate.
OP.... If you're looking into single mass fw conversion, be prepared to do some custome machining. There's a few options for single mass....either get a oem 850R plate with oem p2 R disk(1x23 spline)...that should bolt right up without any modifications, but not sure how much power it will hold....there's also concern about disk thickness ;850 plate is designed for 7.X mm disk, while oem R disk is about 8.4mm. Next options is to do what I did, get a 707 sachs plate (for audi s2) and re-pin the FW for it, then get either a stock p2 R disk, have one custom made, or try exploring other options like mazda rx7/8 disks, which should be the same(240mm 1x23spline). The 707 plate is designed for 8.4mm disk, so it works perfectly with stock R disk and flat fw.
BTW, clutch kit for P2 R w/ dual mass fw has a diff. bolt pattern than 850R pp, or 707 pp, and will also require a tob spacer...so I don't advise going that route.
I would go Single Mass Fly wheel with a 850R clutch with the 23 spines
Sorry I'm kind of confused on the southbound racing site.
Is this the SPEC 850R clutch or one from the southbound racing guys, and does it come with 23 spines or do you have to special order it that way.

yes listen to this guy http://********************/smile/emthup.gif http://********************/smile/emthup.gif http://********************/smile/emthup.gif
I think I'm going to go with the 707 pp with the R disk. When you say re-pin the flywheel are you talking about the stock R dual mass flywheel?
no, the single mass fw. the bolt pattern on 707 plate has a slightly larger diameter, so you need to drill and tap new holes for the bolts+ new holes for guide pins. you also have to re-balance the whole clutch assembly. also, the fw bolts have to be shaved down about 1mm to clear the disk hub.
you also have to re-balance the whole clutch assembly.
What do you mean by re-balance the clutch assembly? How is that done? Also just making sure the single mass fw we are talking about is the 850R (PN 9454774).

Yes, the fw is for 850....doesn't matter which model, as long as it's flat. I got mine from tasca....here's a link: http://www.trademotion.com/par...gid=1
Balancing is done similar to the way you balance your wheels, except instead of weights they just drill holes in the FW. Make sure you balance the FW and PP together Look for a shop that does crank balancing.
Stock slave cylinder will work with the SPEC clutches. I happen to have an extra (new, out of box) slave cylinder that SPEC threw in when they had to rebuild my clutch (sent with the wrong # of splines). Unfortunately, this was after I had already purchased and installed a new one from IPD.

I'm happy to let it go for below retail.
I'm not sure the R's slave cylinder is shared with other models, it may be R only. ipd doesn't sell one for the R (their page clearly states not for R models).

it is the same. Slave cylinder, s60 01-07 (as listed on tasca's site)
like i said, the new generation m56 share a LOT in common with the m66.
and just thought i'd bump the thread to show that there are light weight flywheels available.

How come the ipd one is not?
Edit: after looking at Tasca's parts results, it doesn't inspire much confidence. I'd provide a VIN to make sure they get you the right part. "S60 01-07" can mean anything.
Actually, no ....m66 slave is different than others. The older model have a big cutout on the tranny that gets covered up by some rubber, the M66 tranny hase a perfect hole w/a slot for the slave tube. Also the older model slave looks like a one piece, where the M66 has the tube seperate from the slave. Sorry, don't have the pix right now....but they're different, trust me.

are you 100% sure ...........
I think you mean the difference between external slave and internal slave of wich a internal is posted above

Alright so I have all the pieces now, the 707 pressure plate, the 850R single mass flywheel, and OEM s60R disk. I got them balanced and I am ready to re-install the entire clutch system. After installing the new flywheel, I ran into a small problem bolting the pressure plate on the flywheel with the disk in between. The disk seems to be preventing the pressure plate from fully touching up against the flywheel?!? (about 1/2 an inch) Does this mean that I need a clutch compression tool, or should I just tighten down the bolts of the pressure plate until it does fully reach the flywheel? (I tried this a little bit and it sounded like I was squishing the disk to much, but maybe that is normal). Any help would be awesome, thanks guys.
