Dallas- May 1, 2010 - Volvo Cars North America Sponsored Meet

      UPDATE:

The Texas Chapter of the VCOA will be having a meet May 1 at Cedar Hill State Park, and we'll be joined by some representatives of Volvo Cars of North America. VCNA wants to bring some new models out and give our members a chance to drive them. We'll have a short cruise route to the park (around 30-minute drive) where we will then have a cook out, car show and time to drive some new Volvos. This is the first time VCNA has done this in Texas, and we are looking to have a good turnout to establish a relationship so we can do more things together in the future.

We have a pavilion with grill and bathrooms and our over private parking area on the top of a nice little hill that has trees for some shade and some lake views. We do have a reservation for this site. We have the spot from 10 a.m.- 10 p.m.

We'll meet at the Sonic at I20 and Great Southwest Pkwy at 9:30 a.m. for a quick breakfast and time to group up. We'll roll out at 10 a.m. for the park. It will be around a 15-mile cruise around Joe Pool Lake that will take roughly 30 minutes.

Once at the park (10:30 a.m.) we will have our usual people's choice show., interact with the VCNA folks and drive some new Volvos.

Lunch will be our usual burgers and dogs (with all the fixings), and will be served starting at noon. Lunch is provided by VCNA. You will need $5 to get into the park.

After lunch, people's choice ballots will be totaled and we will give out awards and do some door prizes. We should wrap it up around 3-4 p.m.

If there is interest, we will go as a group to the Bishop Arts district near downtown Dallas for group dinner.

      Cruise start time: 9:30 a.m.
Location: Sonic at 4050 Great Southwest Pkwy Grand Prairie, Tx

      Cruise roll out: 10 a.m.

      End Cruise: 10:30 a.m.
Location: Cedar Hill Start Park at 1570 West FM1382 Cedar Hill, Tx Pavilion J

      Lunch: Noon
What: Burgers, Hot Dogs, Chips, Drinks, Cookies, etc.

      Awards: 2:30 p.m.
What: People's Choice for multiple classes

      End Meet: 4 p.m. approx.

For more details please send Nick Tosie an E-mail at ntosie@hotmail.com

There is a $5 entry fee to the park. VCNA will cover the food and the pavilion fee in addition to making a sizable donation to the club.

Please make plans to be in the Dallas area May 1, 2010!

      George,

One of the turbobricks guys mentioned a large benefit car show going on just south of Dallas- what are your thoughts as to being involved with this?

I was considering doing the park area I had picked for the fall meet and then choosing another location for the fall meet. Thoughts?

Given this will be backed by VCNA I think we should do it as a stand-alone event.

If you can get the Fall Meet park area reserved for May 1 you consider it OK for our needs then go for it.

      Re: (gdill2)

The ultimate Volvo raffle prizes would come from Volvo promotions themselves. I would LOVE a volvo flag, banner, large obnoxious item for my garage. Maybe some Volvo dealer stuff.

Unfortunately I think I'll be in Houston that weekend. Not sure, but will see. I guess I could figure out a two trip weekend.

Just found out about this - I'll be out of the country through April 29 but am really interested. Not that far from Bartlesville.
Sorry about last weekend - stuff just kept piling up!

      Guys & Gals-

Looking for suggestions for a good meeting spot for this meet. Prefer a park of some sort with grills, plenty of parking and access to some nice roads to drive the VCNA demo cars on.

Would like to find something central to south of the DFW area so the folks from Houston/Austin don't have to drive too far.

1st post updated with full meet details.

      Below is the original post

I was informed yesterday by John Holtzapple (VCOA President) Volvo Cars North America has approached the VCOA with teaming up with various VCOA chapters to host a meet in their area that will be funded by Volvo Cars and have their full support with Volvo Cars staff and 6+ current model Volvo vehicles on hand for us to experience and provide feedback on- with no sales people involvement. Volvo Cars goal is to connect with the VCOA members for feedback from some of the major supporters of their brand and put their local reps in touch with the local chapters so that they can be more involved with what we do.

They offered me the date of May 1 (sat) for Dallas (due to travel and time constraints they tell us when they can do that state- this is the date and location they gave me so work with me here). The date is set but location and events are for us to choose, they have allocated $1,000 to support us and possibly more if needed, in addition to bringing cars and Volvo staff.

I have already confirmed we would like to do such an event and am waiting to be contacted by Volvo Cars public relations department for further details.

Feel free to give me comments on what you would like to do- I was thinking a group drive from a central location out to one of the state parks on any of the lakes around DFW for a really nice venue location. I do want to keep the location of the show in a public area that will have some public traffic so Volvo gets some public exposure as well as out various Volvo groups within Texas.

Throw any ideas out there- all will be considered. As we get things nailed down I will provide details. This is going to be big so people not living in the DFW area make plans to be in Dallas May 1, 2010.

Typically we are working with a much smaller budget so if you guys have a really cool meet idea that we might not typically be able to do due to cost now would be the time.

I'd like to have a few options together to take a vote on at the meet in Austin.

      Let me know your thoughts.

      Thank you,

      Nick

Sorry to have to say this, BUT this is the ONE that we can NOT MAKE IT TO !

We will be leaving Galveston on a cruise to Mexico on May 1st.

Make sure to get good pics (and post them) in my absence.

If VCNA has ANY good giveaways (for a C70 or any in general) could someone please get them for me, I would greatly appreciate.
      Thanks.

I've got to be in Houston on Sunday for a race, so I don't think I'll be able to make it. Too bad too.

So the order is in for our OSD. Gonna represent Texas as I roll through Europe like a mad man. Hopefully the new wagon will be in the states in time for the fall meet.

But I was serious in my post up above. See if y'all can score me a nice big Volvo banner, or better yet a Volvo carpet like they have at the dealerships.

This time I'll try hard to be there....will bring the 1800ES and you all can tell me what's wrong with it! HA! You can help me make a long list of how to spend money on it.

    18. #18
      Sounds awesome Ron!

You are not far from where I grew up- Argyle.

Any interest in adding another 1800ES to your fleet? I know of a fixer upper for sale (well...if I don't buy it myself)

To get to Pavilion J at Cedar Hill State Park (call Nick Tosie if you get lost, 940-36X-2X1X ___ X=8):

From FM 1382 enter the park, pay the $5/person entry fee then take the first left and the next right.

BTW, for the Piney Woods (Columbus) Meet I set out directional signs the night before and the local bubbas moved them around to point in the wrong direction.

Could be a lost Volvo still out there somewhere!

Only 4 classes, are there other classes within those?

      Modified by Batalia122 at 7:14 PM 4-29-2010

    30. #30
No, we just run the four classes of:

      Vintage Volvo (122, 1800, 140, 544, etc)
      RWD Volvo (240, 940, 740, etc)
      FWD Volvo (850, S70, etc)
      P2 Volvo (newest cars- S60, S40, etc)

This is just peoples choice...we never really know how much of any one class is going to show up so it's hard to get more in depth right now. As the club grows and we are better able to predict a consistent turn out we will break it into more classes. We typically see around 20-30 cars show up so for now it's plenty and keeps the cost in line. We are not really collecting dues right now so we try to stretch the $$$ as far as possible.

COME RAIN OR SHINE- Everything is bought and ready to go!

      Nick

IT DID NOT RAIN - more magic by Nick Tosie - thanks, Nick.

We had perfect weather and a fine Show with over 25 Volvos making the scene (and a Mercedes, a Honda and a Subaru).

Thanks to the Reps from Volvo Cars North America for staying with us the full event and for providing those all-new shiny Volvos for test drives.

And Thank You to Nick Tosie for planning, arranging and supervising another super assembly of Volvo Lovers in Texas.

BTW, Nick has moved back to the DFW area and now has another toy - an 1800ES...
