Thread: Will Premium speakers work with Basic sound?

  1. 07-30-2010 10:02 PM #1
Still thinking about speaker upgrades and was wondering if the Premium speakers can be swapped with the Basic system speakers. All I know is the cost difference at My Swedish Parts for the front door speakers is about $34 for Basic and about $100 for Premium. I know the Premium adds a midrange driver but my question is do they use the same wiring and connector and will the Basic system amp drive them adequately? Also, would the added midrange driver present any cross-over issues if connected to the Basic system amp? My car is an '07 so it has the integrated amp/CD player unit.

And finally, would they sound any better? And please don't tell me how I can rip apart the entire car and install a new system.... unfortunately, that's not an option.

    thx.

Do you have the door tweeters?

From the wiring diagrams, it looks like it will work. There does not appear to be a separate connector for the mid-range. I don't know if you will need to change connectors though. I also don't know if the basic system will have enough power to effectively drive the Premo speakers. As far as the crossover, they simply used a capacitor to roll off the lows going to the tweeters and probably the mid-ranges too. This detail is not shown in the wiring diagrams. Worst case, you may need to change the tweeter capacitor value to blend with the mid-range properly.
