I took delivery of my replacement S60 earlier today. A huge thanks to everybody at Volvo and my local retailer for all of their assistance throughout the process. The car is identical spec-wise to my outgoing S60 T6, save for this one being a 2012 and having different interior and exterior colors.

Here are a few pictures from delivery, with an added teaser pic. Better photos once I make more progress on installing some additional components.

I may be able to make it out there as well. Gotta doublecheck social calendar with wife, but I think so.
BTW everyone has to bookmark wd's flickr page, its like S60 porn!
:)

My car is having some upgrades done over the next few days, so I get to drive around in this in the meantime. First time really experiencing the Vibrant Copper in person. I have to say, it's not that bad.

This car has Beechwood with Urbane Wood trim, plus Four-C and PCC.

This car also makes me forget how quiet and comfortable the S60 was from the factory. I can barely hear the engine start. My neighborhood can hear mine. Plus, this S60 doesn't make my asshole pucker quite like mine does going over bumps and dips in the road. :p

You ought to try a version with the touring chassis and 17" wheels sometime. Quiet as all get out and just floats over roadway imperfections. Although the 5 cyl T5 makes some noise as you throttle it up to speed, whereas the T6 just purrs.

Hi wdimagineer

Nice Car! I keep following your evolution progress, and try to catch up your step slowly. The R-Design strut brace looks like a possible approach. Is that possible to provide the part numbers of the strut brace and the draining channel to us to follow up?

#212 · (Edited)
Part numbers are below.

The strut brace/cross stay is PN# 31323214 (~$40). The draining channel for LHD cars is 31298771 (~$200). The grille cover snap-ins for the draining channel are 31323420 LH and 31323421 RH (~$70/ea).

May I know what does the draining channel do? I am interested in installing the R-Design strut bar, do I know everything listed here?

Looks great. I can't wait to get mine. Did you get the brake work done as well?

#204 ·
One step at a time. :) The car continues to look great though!

I am looking forward to seeing what you do with the brakes and how much of improvement they make. Assuming I get my car fixed by the dealer this week, I am still thinking I am going to try just a pad and brake line change once some options come out. Infiniti offered a dealer installed high friction pad option for those that wanted a slightly more aggressive setup and were willing to accept the additional brake dust. It made a sufficient difference on my G35x so I am hoping to I can achieve some similar results with S60.

The first upgrade will be a change in rotors. There are no aftermarket parts at the moment, so I'm having a pair of OEM rotors slotted and will receive those soon. At the same time, I'm probably going to install some spacers on the rear wheels to push them out a bit further.

In addition, I am working with a Brembo reseller to see if the previous P2 brakes from the S60R could be adapted to my car.

This could be interesting. I would think there could be some issues in the rear with the e-brake. I thought the S60Rs use a standard drum style while the P3's electronic e-brake simply clamped the caliber. I could be completely wrong about this though.

The covers won't snap in. But you can cut holes that are similar in width to the brace, and just do it that way. Seaton463 on here did.

You can find pictures of how I cut the stock drainage channel here:

http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread.php?162402-Just-added-some-new-R-Design-parts

This is my temporary fix until the R-design drainage channel arrives off of backorder. Looking back, I probably cut the slot in the mesh a little longer than I could have, but I knew I was ordering the R-design part anyway. You can also look to some of WDI's earlier pictures and cut out the entire mesh.

Thanks. The funny thing is that I was in a hurry to get finished before we had to take my wife's parents out to dinner. I quickly pulled out the dremel just to make it fit and had it done in about five minutes. Everything else was done, so of course I had to get this done before test driving the car.

advice

Hello WD;
I'm thinking of installing the shocks and springs from Heico, but after reading "seaton463" post:

"I looked over my car this weekend to see if I could find an obvious cause to the steering noise. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything other than a really beat up ball joint".
"I am guessing it was a result of replacing the front springs which may require releasing the lower ball joint to remove the strut? It is just the rubber dust boot that is torn. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will all be fixed when I take it into the dealer this week".

I'll be be taking it to a very reputable place here in Los Angeles. They work on Bentleys, RR, Ferraris, Lambos and they have done worked on some of my previous cars.
I wander if lowering my car will have future problems? Did you take your car to the dealer to have them install lowering suspension?
Your advice will be greatly appreciated

Lowering your car won't present any issues, for the most part. I did much of the work myself, using a borrowed lift and the appropriate factory tools.

It's been a while since I've posted. My new drilled/slotted rotors are installed. These will hold me over until my HEICO big brake kit arrives. :)

Thanks George! The black center hat and vanes will definitely hold up better over the years.

Braking performance has improved. Unfortunately, the car lit up like a christmas tree this morning and is in the process of being towed to my dealer. I haven't had a chance to drive it that much, but I'm very pleased with this upgrade.

Another subtle change to my vehicle. Since I started this project I wanted my vehicle to be different. Now that the R-Design models are officially out, I wanted to do something to make my interior stand out from others. Several hours and a couple feet of 3M DiNoc and this is the result.

It's not perfect. There are a few air bubbles that I can't get to stick, so I plan on redoing a few pieces. But for the moment, I'm happy. I think it really contrasts nicely with the interior.

You sir are very lucky. I bought a 2011 XC60 R-Design and wanted to have volvo and or IPD lower it and the dealer said that Volvo USA would void the warranty if I did so I called Volvo Cars of N. America and they verfied that. So you are very lucky. Hope you got it in writting.

Your car looks amazing.

#247 ·
Where did you pickup your 3M DiNoc?

Car is looking fantastic, can't wait to see it in person!

#248 ·
Thanks Chris! I bought it locally, from a friend who owns a sign printing business. He typically stocks it for architectural applications and just picked some of the carbon look product for me.

Looks like we'll be seeing each other soon I hope.

That's true, but it's not a tough burden to carry. As an attorney I can assure you the dealers/manufacturers will (and have) armies of lawyers ready to fight warranty claims in situations exactly like this. Having an aftermarket part on your car, rightly or wrongly, gives the dealer an easy out to honoring your warranty claim. Then it's on you to prove otherwise. For example, in the case you described, the dealer would argue that the lowering springs put more stress on the axles, which could then have caused or contributed to a transmission failure. Of course, a lot of it depends on how well you get along with your dealer, but if you've got the deep pockets to go up against the dealer and manufacturer, hire experts, etc., have at it. Sounds like the OP has a great relationship with his local retailer so it's a moot point in this case.

Edit: Sorry for the threadjack OP, keep up the great work, and really enjoying following your progress on this car!

No worries. Thanks for the compliments. Information like this is important for consumers.

Hopefully everybody will be seeing a little more of the car soon. :)

I only have a few things left to do before I complete this car and move on to the other Volvo we are about to order.

All that's left are the big brake kit, the carbon fiber mirror covers, carbon inlay for the Heico exhaust diffuser, a new shift knob, and a couple other odds and ends.

Of course this is all subject to change pending some engine upgrades if the appropriate parts become available. (I hope!)

#253 ·
Picked up a new shift knob. I really liked this particular one because of the carbon fiber and leather. The leather is perforated in a pattern similar to the R-Design steering wheel. I DO NOT like the MOMO logo printed on it, however.

Thanks to Arith for the inspiration.
