      I'm not sure I'm seeing what you're seeing. The lower valence has design openings outside of the exhaust on both sides to match the openings in between the exhausts. Just above that opening on the passenger side you can see the tow hook cover in place. Besides that cover, there's not really anything to remove back there.

      I am getting ready to list for sale my 2008 XC90 V8 Executive. Just turning 70,000. Mystic Silver with Black interior and Nav. in the last 5000 miles put on brand new LRR all seasons and brakes all around. MAG Volvo in Dublin Ohio replaced the clock spring about 2 years ago. Normal exterior wear but I keep the seats treated in lexol regularly. I can email photos. brian@difrancolaw.com. Has tow hitch as well. I am trying to get $15,000 because of the new tires.

      I only see two reviews - hard to draw a lot of conclusions from that but I agree, buying any used car is caveat emptor. This dealer doesn't have a website either which is a little odd.

      Could be miles, which aren't indicated in the ad. Most stores don't like to have higher mile cars on their lots. I agree, anybody looking at a used car should approach it very cautiously - I am not endorsing this dealer.

      I don't see any rust, aside from a caliper and license plate bracket, which is pretty typical for 9 year old Ohio car.

      Finally scored one yesterday. 1 Owner, Georgia car. No Rust at all. Very clean. Mrs Ocean approves of her new whip!
      They were asking 11K. I walked out paying 6K plus doc fee, taxes, tag. Under 7 total. They even filled the tank and I got a $25 Visa Card.

      153K. Had to travel to Duluth, Georgia. Traveling is a must to find the color/combo I have been looking for a few months. There was one like this in Asheville, NC but was in poor condition and only had a few thousand less miles.
      Now time for some minor interior trim and other odds and ends.

      Curious: how did you evaluate the transmission (or valve body), angle gear, rear pinion bearing, lower control arms, wheel bearings, alternator, AC compressor, serpentine belt + tensioner, etc ...?

      Did you do a PPI by and independent mechanic, self?

      At very least, I suspect you could take it to the dealer he works at for a PPI.

      ... You gotta share what your secret is with dealing with dealers. So far i have bought a number of cars and I have never been able to negotiate anything lower than maybe 1000$ off asking price due to a number of issues i find with the vehicle.

      I do however hear these storries of people walking in dealerships and walking out shaving off 50% or more of cars price.
      So far none of the dealers ive worked with were willing to budge on the price at all.

      There must be something that I am missing. It just seems that the ones i run into know these cars will sell one way or another and they are just not desparate to let them go.

      Any input of your secrets will be greatly appreciated.

      I have typically just talked to the garage that did most of the work on the car and have found them for the most part to be accurate. You could also call around to Volvo dealers to see if they would do the PPI. Also, pretty much every town has a reputable indie mechanic well versed in all things Volvo. There are also nationwide companies that probably serve as middlemen to arrange a PPI. I have never used one but they are out there.

      In my most recent remote buying experience, I just called the dealer that was local to the used car lot selling the car and scheduled a PPI with a service advisor and then had the salesman from the used car lot take the car over for the appointment and pick it up when it was done.

      That seems easy enough. I assume you did that first, then negotiated a price, and only once that was agreed did you travel to said remote location to execute the transaction?

      Give or take... I got the PPI done, got the report back from the dealer by email and started into the negotiation phase. The guy selling it had had it on his lot for 5 months or so. He told me after he picked the car back up from the dealer's PPI that he had two other interested parties. I called what I thought to be his bluff and offered him less than his asking price. Apparently it wasn't a bluff and one of the interested parties bought it for full asking. Oh well... Color me disappointed. lol

      But the order you said is the order I'd have followed if I'd have been able to buy the car.

      It really just depends on the Dealer. I've worked for a few and one was one of the Larger Dealerships Groups in the East. If I were looking for another car, I would look for one at a non-Volvo large franchise dealer. For one thing, they tend to not know as much about those cars and any possibility of expensive repair will make them want to dump it. So if you can focus on needed repairs or fixes and how expensive they are, they get a little nervous. Two, they are many times focused more on moving units vs prices. They don't like used cars to linger on the lot and if its been there two weeks they may let it go cheaper than wholesaling or running back through the auction lane. I was following my particular car since Mar 1. They dropped the price after week two and I pounced. I put a deposit on it over the phone and drove down Saturday to inspect. I found some issues. Told them they wasted my time driving from 4 hours away. Demanded my deposit back because the car didn't live up to their inspection. They really don't ever want to refund a deposit because it looks like they failed to make a sale and upper bean counters don't like that. So I told them what my price was and if that didn't work for them then I'd be on my way. They countered but I stood firm. I knew they just wanted it off their lot. I made it clear I was doing them a favor and even at my price I was taking a risk (which in a way I am). It also helps I know these vehicles very well and know the costs of repairs, keys, programming etc

      I will say a proper PPI on any used vehicle can usually save 10% on the low end. I can find something wrong with almost any car, even CPO's and that can be used to negotiate a lower price. I had a customer a few years ago that just had to have a Land Rover for their 16 year old daughter. BTW, not a great choice for a first car. Just too big to park for a new driver and lots of blind spots but not my kid. So I inspected two different Rovers they brought in. Old Disco's and complete pieces of dung. Both needed a few thousand dollars just to be safe. So they passed and became a little testy that I found so much wrong with the car. Its like they wanted me to not find anything wrong so little Jessica will be happy. They did bring a third one in and it was in descent shape. Wrote only a few things up and they got it for $1500 less than the $5K asking. So even though they paid for 3 PPI's, they saved much more than that because if they had bought either of the first two, they would have been out the cost of the vehicle trying to fix it.
