It's time to make some changes to my '99 V70 T5M

I thought it was about time to start a thread on my time with this car up to now and then chronicle what I have in store for her. Fair warning up front, I like photos and will be imbedding a lot of them here. And if by chance you feel I’m providing a bit more detail than you like, feel free to skip what every doesn’t interest you.
It all started in January 2012 when JRL made the decision to sell his ’99 V70T5M. Knowing that he had built this car for himself left no question as to the cars condition. So sight unseen I flew from California to Pennsylvania, paid him an ungodly but actually very fair amount in my opinion and drove it back home. I must say that Jim did a fine job of setting this car up. The drive train basically stock with a cat-back exhaust and buttery smooth not swapped manual 5 speed transmission, all sitting on top of Koni Yellow’s and H&R springs. A few shots from the trip home:

The first thing that became apparent was the need to upgrade the sound. They were still OK, but the OEM’s had to go, so as long as I was at it, I added a bit of sound proofing.

I never was a fan of the cloth seat inserts and the driver’s side had a seam issue. Also, keeping an eye on red cheese wax in hot weather is a must. All of which pushed me over the edge to redo it all in leather.

There has been a few bumps and scrapes along the way. First was a front blow out at 65mph.

Next, at 2AM on Hwy101 between Camp Roberts and King City traveling North in the fast lane doing 75 in a 70 zone, (high brush in center divider) a very large black wild pig, dash out of the brush. No time to even hit the brakes. Right corner of the car hit its hind quarters, it spun and slammed into the passenger door leaving an impression of its tusk in the dent! This was a first for the Geico agent.

Getting on to the present; The place we were living in the Bay Area only had a one car garage and car port and massive restrictions about doing any kind of repairs. This placed all my tools in storage and handcuffed my tinkering. Yes it’s an extreme change, but we’ve leased a place in Scottsdale AZ that has a wonderful 4 car garage. With such a move there are logistics and part of mine was transporting 3 cars to their new home. So the first was the ’99 which I towed behind a 26 foot Penske with all of my tools. Right in the middle of the tow dolly is a very large bolt head. Going on, the damage was done. Coming off only made it worse. Here is the short video of what took place exiting the dolly.

I’m glad I did and would highly recommend to anyone planning to tow your car. Purchase the towing insurance! The shop I’ve selected is pretty booked, so the repair won’t be until early September. If the weather cools a bit, I might have some time to install some of the goodies I’ve been collecting. Still need to get a downpipe and I should have just about everything I intend to install.

Such a beautiful car! My suggestions would be Greens to go with the 19t and maybe a Hilton tune, strut tower brace or a quaif if you're really adventerous, Pilot Super Sports as summer tires, sway bars, maybe a custom R wheel wrap in 3960 tan leather. Looking forward to your build!

Thanks, Green's are a good idea. Still looking at Hilton -v- ARD I've got time as that will be the last thing before turning the key. Strut brace, sways etc are already in place. A quaif will wait until it needs a clutch. Might get rid of the dual mass at the same time.

A 16T can overwhelm blues quite easily. A Do88 intercooler, ipd turbo back exhaust and snaab intake ran me out of injector capacity quickly while custom tuning with Hilton. Greens fixed that. The 19t comes on faster but doesn't flow that much more ultimately. I have a parts car that ran Browns (seriously wtf) a 19t and a ipd stage 2. Admittably it's dead now, a head gasket/overheat and encounter with a tree claimed its roadworthyness.

If all of your wheels are 17", 320mm brakes aren't a bad idea either.

Some people have had good luck but I can tell you that the ARD tune on my C70 absolutely sucked. Real notchy boost, it literally would jump from 5 psi at 2000 to 10 psi at 2500 to 15psi at 3000. Not smooth at all. Then every 3 weeks it would throw an overboost code, and go into a reduced performance mode with max 8 psi boost. If you research ME7 tunes you will see many many complaints about ARD. None with Hilton.

Appreciate the input. You've always provided sound advice. I'll start a dialog with Hilton.

What's in the picture is a 302mm kit, which will be just fine as it's not a track car or will it ever tow anything!

Thanks Mitch, I think I'll just stick with good old 91 octane. I've only seen E85 at a few pumps around here and it just adds a variable to the tune.

As someone with a P80 and a hilton tune, PLEASE heavily consider him over ARD. Zero complaints and the car is as smooth as can be with the tune on it. Beside that you have a really nice wagon, can't wait to see it when it's done

If you go with a Hilton tune you should definitely data log and tune it that way instead of him just sending you a shelf tune basically

I've already purchased a laptop as well as VIDA / DICE so I should be OK for logging. Haven't actually hooked it up to the car yet. Anyone with specifics I should need to know regarding the software tool, I'm all ears.

ViDA is for diagnostics or reference. The dice is the communication tool. Hilton has his own custom tuning program for reading, loading, logging ect. As far as I am aware all the 99s he does get a truly custom tune. The P2R tune has been done so many times that there's an optimized version already worked out (according to Bob) so I wouldn't be worried about working with him on a 99 tune. I'm currently doing one for the pewter with him. Reworking the ignition timing advance since I discovered the cams were pretty far out of adjustment when we did the cam seals.

Thanks for the clarification, based on a post in your thread, I was under the impression that you did some of the logging via the DICE interface.

That's correct. Hiltons software uses the dice to read the car. Logs everything. Throttle, lambda, rpm, boost, throttle angle, knock per cylinder, ignition angle, ect. Like 30 parameters

Yeah I'm really enjoying the logging. And yeah he's doing a full custom tune for mine too, look at this boost plot after two rounds of tuning (psi vs rpm):

My JZW tune would spike to 20 and then drop back to 15 by 4500 RPM.

Except you're way out of the 19Ts efficiency range at 23 or 24 psi.

I put polks in my wagon too. Huge improvement. I also have a couple grand in Polk audio home stereo speakers. I like Polk audio. They sound good with my Mcintosh amps

for my stage 1 it was just a shelf tune. stage 2 i'm assuming is when he does the logging and modifying of the tune. I did a lot of aimless driving around trying to get the damn thing to log......

Thanks Andy, still 112 deg out today, and CJ still needs to make my downpipe. I'm thinking to at least get the 302mm brakes put on some early morning or late evening soon. Adapting to dessert lifestyle proves to have its challenges when physical labor is involved.

2000VR only at stage 1 right now. Downpipe is on and waiting to go stage 2 once I get an intercooler this fall. Still having plenty of fun with just the stage 1

Wow remind me not to complain about working on my car when it's in the mid 90s around here!

Any idea on the lead time for CJ to make you the downpipe? My buddy ordered some AWD rear toe rods from him and he was having some supply issues due to a fire adjacent to his shop.

Same situation, I talk to CJ and the fire next door to his shop has set him back a bit. Smoke damage etc.. He said he should be back up to speed in a couple of weeks. Hopefully by then we will have had a bit of rain to take the edge off of the heat.

Baby steps, still 105 deg out. Got the downpipe ordered with CJ as well as all new hardware for the manifold and new front and rear O2 sensors. Freshened up the turbo..

You DO remember what you said to me before you left, right?

(I don't see what damage was done during the tow? So much for a T5M that NEVER had any paintwork, except bumpers)

Yes I do remember, and everything I've done to the car has been done with taste. The bumper is being replaced from the tow damage as it tore. If you need more picture of it I can take a few more close ups. Couldn't help the pig, and that was fixed perfectly also. So basically Jim, it's time to make the car my own. Hold your judgment until it's complete.
