Nurburgring Scouting Report 24 Apr 05 (LOTS of pics)

Well, four of us went up to Nurburgring to scope out area prior to big GTG next Sunday, 1 May. New addition to KMC R-gang, Russ, brings our first Magic "Blue" to the group (its a GT, but we let him join anyways , he blames it on his wife). Hopefully Doug's car will settle the "you can't get a red factory sport package" debate. Also, Gerry is running Ti Pegs on his Sapphire Black, don't think we've seen that in here before.

100 miles and 55 min later ...Doug left an hour before us, but got distracted following some hot chicks in a Porsche, ended up lost in BFG, had to call him and guide him back

NOTE: After much haggling I conviced the guys to line the cars up for some pics. To prove that I can take input, please note the empty sky background (lax01), the lack of other cars (Barry), and some pics taken from a low angle just for carson (which was not easy with a broken knee, but the pain was worth it, just to make you happy ).

Ran into Todd, who is also stationed at Ramstein, on his 13th visit to the Ring. SWEET WRX Sti. He played taxi for a lap. If the WRX could fit a crippled fifth person I could've ridden along...oh well, Todd you owe me a lap next week.

What happens when you don't order the Nav

At anyrate, had a blast, drove three laps (leaving three on my ticket for next Sunday 1 May 05), saw a bunch of cool cars (look for Nurburgring Car sightings thread). Car has much higher limits than I do, but I think I did alright considering this was first time I've ever been to a track and I was dealing with accident flash backs the whole time.

Of course on the first lap, a motorcyclist wiped out hard about 30 seconds in front of me just before Carousel.

Luckily I was able to drive to top of Carousel and call paramedics (he lived evidently, which is good, wasn't moving laying on side of road when I saw him last). On second lap, a mustang spun out right in front of us. And then on Third lap, some white POS flipped and rolled on the track. Finally, I almost got ran over by a ring taxi (those new 500hp M5s are FAST).

On a positive note, I was able to keep up with a Porsche GT3 with no problem. Probably an inexperienced driver, but considering I have NO EXPERIENCE on a track, doubt he had less. Of course, then an Opel calibra passed me (I'm sure it was heavily modded). See some of you next week.

GREAT job on the pics Kelly. However, you forgot to mention what that mysterious Porsche with hot chicks in it allowed me to find out about our R's...Guys, unfortunately Volvo really did install a speed limiter/governor on our cars, and after about 20 minutes of holding at a steady 155'ish mph I have decided it'll be deactivate today...

Oh yeah, as far as me being "talked in" by phone by Kelly after getting lost(umm..punk.. ), I was getting gas about 40 miles north of the Nuerburgring at somewhere I could get US prices, not the German $6 to $7 a gallon. That high-speed action dropped me to about a 1/4 tank, where as the rest of the group showed up with over half.... Oh well, it was worth the delay...AND as I passed Kelly on the way home while he was pulling off to get gas at somewhere he would have to pay German prices I realized I had made the right decision.

All kidding aside, have I mentioned that I really love the German autobahns... Unfortunately, I am apparently going to start having an affair with the Nuerburgring. So if anyone is a relationship counselor, I could really use some good advice on how to avoid having to get a second job to support my habit with these gals

Also, does anyone know if Svenske offers discounts to people that are truly ADDICTED to speed??? On second thought, I think I'll call my health insurance carrier to see if they'll be able to assist me with mod'ing my car since I am pretty sure this is a true medical condition...

Okay, just got back from the Volvo shop...guess what, NO MORE SPEED GOVERNOR! Everyone needs to start praying for good weather, because I don't have the nerve to make sure the governor is really deactivated in the rain... This time Sat. I should have to fill up my gas tank in 45-minutes flat... i think the Germans really want me dead, you heard it here first.

I wasn't buying, gas, I was making sure Russ (who like you, made the poor decision to not to buy the Nav) had enough gas to make it to the next esso station that was 30 KM up the road (love that Nav)...

The fact that you had to go that fast in the rain to catch us (we were tooling along at a safe 110mph) is another example of why you should have bought the nav Maps are soooo five minutes ago.

BTW, I'll help you eliminate the flowers, as soon as Foglesong PCSes.

Serious, you’ve got me laughing out loud here… The Nuerburgring trip was a GREAT IDEA… I can’t wait until this weekend. I need to ask a favor though, can you carry my camera for me once we get there, because I would really like to get some good pictures of all of us passing you again. (I AM KIDDING!!!)

This next trip is going to be pretty good time, I hope we get a good turn-out.

Well shoot, I guess I am the last of the group to put a post in here.

Let's just say the "Ring" was awesome. Nothing like gettin passed by M5s and Porsches. Man those M5s are sharp looking.

At any rate, had a blast. Lookin forward to next week.

Any firm numbers about how many will be going? Would be nice to have a bunch of us up there runnin while someone takes pics in one of the observations areas...

Also, was quite surprising to see how many peeps were looking at the Rs following each other around the track...not a bad lil head turnin ride we have. Even from the start...peeps were impressed.

Very funny thing happened at Vogelweh tonight. Guy in a M3 pulls up next to me in the parking lot and asks if I'm "R" Kelly from Swedespeed (sort of freaked me out). Turns out it was Joker, who used to own an R and post here -- he still reads the forum even though he has gone to the dark side. He recognized my car from recent posts (tail light / rims fairly unique I guess). At any rate, I mentioned the GTG on Sunday at Nurburgring, and he was interested. Sooo if Rob, Todd and Joker show up, we'll have an S4, WRX Sti and M3 look at as they pass us on the track
