      Just for You Man ..

      Porting Everything .. This . . Flows Nice !

By the Tim - I got the Manifold Cleaned for the 4th Time to Inspect - looking for any thing I could have done a little Better I was
a Little Hungry .. after all the back and Forth . . back .. and Forth .
There was some sort of Plastic Crap stuck down in the O-Ring Grooves and - good thing I had a Set - just to get those to stay in and
then Do a Ink Transfer with all the Weight of the Intakes - Dragged - all in all another 4 Hrs. Later - Not Counting Trip to get some Special Ink .
Matched Up - OK - 10 Times Better with Gasket to use , but My Volvo is Up on Blocks .
      Wife couldn't Find the Transfer Paper - so - I could make a Gasket . .

I wonder How much Higher one of these Plums could be Mounted .675 maybe before it Hit the Under side or the Hood ..
During Throttle & Gear Moves ..

      ( Anyone ever Check ) ?_?

Maybe It's Time for a Custom Intake - aren't some of those Intakes I posted Pic - Wild . .

Looking Back at These Plumes - Certainly anyone that has a Generation 1 - Plume ( Has to get that Ported ) re-guarding the Puma .
The Sec. Generation - supposedly Improved at the Outlets - Still has No special Gasket - all I can say is Wow - how Bad was Generation 1 ?

Looks to Me Don - spent more Time Designing and Executing His Product .. .. Anyone that Got the Early Version & Paid more to have it
Power Pumice Ported . . certainly has Very Good Performer .

Anyone Needing the Top Cleaned Up and Matched , seems all have Enough Material .

I'd even say there is enough to do ( Velocity Stacks ) = Stage 2 on Top .

I do slightly Velocity Stack them on Matching & Clean Up . .

All should get Don's Gasket as it could be Easy Adapted ( Into being Used ) on all these Other Plumes ; with
      ( My Port Matching Upper ) . .

I agree - the puma upper is not nearly as polished as the moutune/elevate upper. I chose the Puma upper because it was cheap(ish), looks stock, and flows better than stock. Obviously there's room for improvement - enter engtech's porting service.

I Noticed on the Puma - the Design seem to Favor the Velocity Stack - Effect - as the Their -
( Puma Plume - is in itself a Velocity Stack )

Dan cleaned up the Puma manifold I send him. He smoothed out the mating surface...

      https://goo.gl/photos/LoEcxrTC1JFvvWyB7

Matched the Puma throttle body area and the ports to the lower he did for me (picture for inner port clarity)...

and the finished stage 2 lower...

Absolutely awesome work. Can't wait to install. Aiming for Sunday!

That's pretty sweet. I really enjoy working on rough cast stuff more than the already painted and polished stuff. Gives you tons of work room and you don't have to keep it pretty until you're totally done with the work.

I was kinda interested in how much Dan opened up the throat of the runners to match up with the upper inlet's port.

Anyone ever done some work with Flex-Hones? I planned on using one (a 1.5 or 2"er 400 grit one) on the intake manifold lower to remove some material and then a fine 800 grit one to polish it. Then I planned on using it to size match the holes on the upper too. and then when the head comes off...oolala.

I was impressed when I used this to hone my harley cylinders, seems to be a great product.

Those are designed for cylinder honing - I doubt those are abrasive enough to remove a sizeable amount of material off the runners. Maybe I'm wrong?

Some of them are for cylinder honing. They make smaller ones for stuff even down to gun-barrel size (.45ACP) ($30 or so). They actually have sizes going up by 1/4" starting at 1" so that's pretty sweet, and silicone-carbide and aluminum oxide as abrasives.

The silicone carbide one is strong enough to remove material from the cast iron liners in my S&S cylinders, so I don't think abrasiveness is a issue, but I haven't played with the aluminum oxide ones. Going rate when I was honing them out was .01" for every 10 minutes of run time on a full speed clutch drill. My cylinders needed about .02" removed total to fit the wiseco's in there. After about 40 minutes they were both about 0.001" off from what I needed so just a few more zips and they were done and honed (did the ~130 grit from removal and the 300 grit for the oil trap hone.

In my opinion, will beat the 3-4 hours to spent using them small grinding and polishing bits included in some of those kits. plus they're flexible so it'll go with the curve. easier and remove material conducive to a straight line rather than a curve considering the tension on the wire to straighten out, making your airflow path of travel slightly less 90-degree curvish.

This 2nd Cutting : still Not Polished
Issues with Excessive Polishing - Surface becomes Sticky - also the more You Polish ( Every Little , Little , Tiny , Line becomes Magnified )
all of which is _ well into the 280 Finish Range .

I'm probably going to use the gasket method. Draw the gasket size holes on the lower mani and then just keep running the spiralhone in and out until it's close. That way all 5 will be as large and as smooth as possible. That one in your photo with the face Grat commented on is a 70 series one isn't it?

I'll post before and after pics of mine when it's done. Do we have to replace the head - manifold gasket or the manifold lower-upper gaskets when we take it apart or are they metal stamped bad boys? I get paid Monday so I should be able to order it without too much trouble.

      Haven't seen any Comments , Your ? about the Pic - No that's GRat's Lower Unit ! - - ( Garrett"s )
Everyone has preferred methods and Tools - just as 1 Mechanic Tunes Rotors & Others Replace them ..

Now , I might be able to do this for 1 yr. -
( Maybe ) My Wrist - were pretty Beat 3/4 way through , but it was
Time to do the Lighter Stuff which takes 3 - 4 times longer .. Gripping so Long - Your Hand Locks up & get Stiff .
      ( Pace Yourself : 5 - 6 hr. Max @ a Time make sure to Step Back and Re-access Work done ! )

      INSPECT , INSPECT , INSPECTION

I'll Add more Photo's and the Tools in the Pic's are there for a reason , It is very Hard to Turn Yourself into a Machine .
      Your Must Use -
      1. Consistent Pressure - most of the Time ..
      2. You must do Similar Moves and Passes to each Runner . ( Keep Tools Moving )
      3. Don't Over Heat Your Tools - so - Keep 3 Set Up's near by - Lay 1 down , Pick another Up .
      4. Measure Your Part : Before and After as You start to get a Feel or to Gage the Material Rate of Removal ..
      5. Light Oil could be used to help Keep Chips - Out of Your Carbides . ( Carbides come in Short and Long Shafts )
      6. Carbides Also come Designed for - Steel & Cast or Aluminum Alloys .
      7. Plan for Desired Air Flow to Application .
      8. Have all Tools to be Used in Place and Ready to Go . ( Investing Ahead of Time . ) & Different Types . .
      9. ( Battery Power , Electric Power , Air Powered ) some of Each . .
      10. Top Upper Plenum is Fairly easy - Lower Intake is more Complicated - Technical .

      11. There are Basically 2 Air Stall Points behind the Valves - looking @ Intakes Lower Runners & Upper Plenum .
      12. Air Speed is very Important , Profile , Sizing and then Volume .

Cutting Must Keep the Tool Moving .
You have to Feel the Material as it's being Cut to Vary Load You apply , so as You proceed TOO DESIRED Shape
Always Heading toward the Design Plan - You started with .

      1. Adding Velocity Stack Effect
      2. Straight Out - Sharp Turns or High Pressure Points by Smoothing with Softer Radii .
      3. 2 Stall Area's - Air in Very Fast - Out Ever Faster !
      4. OE Factory's Idea is to FILL the Plenum FAST - They Open Up - Cly #5 Lower Intake Track & Last Plenum Outlet More then Others . .
      5. Puma does the same thing Only tried to have Slightly Decreasing Effect - by - Staging each Cly Outlet in Steps slightly smaller all the way back
      ( Throttle Body ) .
. Elevate - does it Mostly on Cly5 and again with Large Radii sitting above Outlets and Volume . .

My Take on this is to Increase Their Effects - By - Enhancing what they Started !
Puma I gave Larger Velocity Stack Effect - Increased Throttle Body Match - Enhancing to Top & Sides - Increase Plenum Fill Rate .
Increase Outlets also same % as Lower Unit . ( Air Stall in Plenum is in Micro _ Sec. ) Speeding the Exit Air - there - FIRES Pulses !
When the Window is of Time is Open ..

      Busy night/morning...

First cold start after Puma Upper and Dan's Lower - https://goo.gl/photos/nZ6GvvX7WYPd4ovK6

Compared to a cold start two years ago no engine mods at all (different camera) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSUHyXBmoTw

When I pulled the lower from the car there was some rust inside the runners. No good! Much cleaner and nicer sound now (and a little louder too).

Two cold starts - One is way Smoother , little Deeper .. ( This one Lit the Cat - Fast )

The Other one sound tinny and raw Fuel into Cat . .

Nice - must be getting More Oxygen . . Why do all those Cars have Pumps ?

Here You able to Tell amount of material Removal just Compare the Two Outlets . .
Not Polished Yet and Velocity Stack Improve Not Done - Yet . . ( Just for Material Comparison )

Puma Plays well with this as in - Itself - is a Velocity Stack - using Air Speed as it's Friend .

All Intakes and Exhuast have Pulses - it's getting that Pulse into Plenum & Into the Lower Outlets .
( Stacking the Odds ) sort of Speak . .
