Why's that? Isn't it on the owner to comply with state inspection requirements, not on the person selling the part unless they want to use it's "legality" to boost sales. He should just slap an "offroad use only" sticker on it and sell it in all 50 states or a Not-CARB approved on it and sell it in 49 states.

Actually, I'm not sure that he has to get CARB buy-off. I think he's just dealing with production issues at the moment.

Huh. So can you take a pic where the transfer case interacts with the fwd charge pipe, aka, on the left side of the pipe? Because it seems like this one goes underneath the case instead of around it. Does the engine cover fit okay?

Sure...I'll do that. I have the Volvo aluminum belly pan which sits insanely low anyway, so no clearance issues.

Can't. the FWD pipe's routing physically intersects the AWD transfer case; unless you've conjured up a work-around

      https://www.elevatecars.com/store/vo...turbo-fwd.html

Look at the FWD pipe on elevate's website - that 45 degree angle crosses the transfer case. On the other hand, it's pretty obvious that you've made it work ... and I'm intrigued. So more pics please!

Unless... is it possible that the auto and manual trans charge pipe has a different route?

You can say "can't" all day long....but the photos are real and the car has been driven with that pipe for >1 year. Perhaps more photos tonight....the week is starting out far too busy.

Dr. Jonez. Making it happen on the Volvo side too, I see!

(For those of you that aren't aware, this guy is kind of a legend over on the Audizine forums for basically the same reason. Doing difficult and hitherto impossible things and making it look like nothing.)

I'm fumbling through, for now. Bought a V50 for a DD/when the Audi is down. I have a lot of Volvo things to learn, which was the goal. Also, I'm trying out the wagon thing, which is AWESOME. Love it, love it, love it.

Ha. You'll be fine. The Volvo world is much smaller....much less innovation (goes hand in hand w/market size...) and no VCDS. VIDA is OK....but nothing like the control you have w/VCDS.

Wagon life is indeed awesome. I miss it daily.

Still doesn't matter, a lot of people just want a smooth install and proper fitment.
The moment i'm busy and takes me longer than necessary i'm happy to pay the extra for a AWD pipe.

Personally, I'm hyper-conscious that anything that doesn't look stock will violate my state's emissions inspection. I want absolutely nothing aftermarket that can't pass as stock and not having the stock engine pan fit, would be a red flag.
Btw, I already made a custom AWD charge pipe and I can confirm that it makes a difference.

      Fitment ?

I think the main point is that it wont "fit well" as the awd one would, but that's good to know... May go this route myself then, prior to going stage 2.5...

You just need an extra long bolt and maybe a collar to put in between

I just bought a FWD pipe off a friend, planning on installing it this weekend. I'll get side by side pics of the differences and see what all is needed for a "good" fitment.

That'd be great info mniwt. Since dons still 'working' on the awd pipe, let's find out what alternatives exist.

i can see it taking a while when your a one man show and making something in mass production, you dont want a bunch of angry Volvo owners sending back there charge pipes with a weld blown out the side.

that being said shame on all of us for not taking the chance to fit the FWD one sooner, been missing out on some extra smiles per hour .

The Elevate FWD intercooler hardpipe will fit the AWD with little modification.

First thing to note is that the pipe only goes halfway into the silicone hose by the turbo. It's still far enough to securely fit the hose clamp inside of the flared portion of the pipe, so I have no fear of this ever coming loose. You can see the markings on the pipe from FWD fitment.

Side by side, the angle of the FWD pipe is much better for flow than the AWD pipe.

The AWD has two horizontal bolts holding it in place, where the stock and Elevate FWD pipes only use one.

To bolt up the vertical bolt, I needed a 40mm long bolt and a 7/8th inch spacer. Spacer size might vary depending on how far you fit the hard pipe into the turbo side silicone hose. Truth be told, I wouldn't even consider this bolt necessary. The pipe was solidly in place before putting this bolt in. On my C30, this bolt hole is stripped and I'm not even using it.

The way I have it sitting, there are a few millimeters clearance between the pipe and the transfer case and a few millimeters clearance between the pipe and the iPd skid plate.
Fitment isn't perfect, but I'd say it's good. Once Elevate releases the AWD pipe design, I'll probably keep the FWD pipe just because it improves flow by removing that sharp 90° bend.

As expected, throttle response is improved and power delivery is much smoother. Unexpected was the increase in top end AND low end torque. Usually increasing volume causes a slight loss on the low end because more air is needed to fill the space between the turbo and throttle body. I can only assume the shape of the FWD pipe is what benefits the low end.

I also installed the silicone intercooler to throttle body hose.

Damn bro awesome job on this, well detailed and documented - as always, and straight to the point. Nice work!

Now a few questions, with your BOV what did you have to change as far as hardware? Just a 3" flange I instead of a 2.5"? Also with the change in airflow do you have to adjust the BOV at all?

Thanks! The Elevate pipe is 2.5" and the BOV pipe I had is also 2.5." I had to stretch the stock rubber hose to fit the BOV pipe properly, but I knew I'd have the Elevate kit in my hands just a week later.

I did have to tighten the BOV a bit. It was venting at too low of boost immediately after installing this pipe.

Awesome, so it fits but it hangs down. Enough to clear the ipd skid pad but too much to probably to clear the oem skid pad. Right?

Hmm if the FWD pipe already fits AWD, and only minor adjustments are needed to make it perfect, what's taking so long? =(
