Thread: Volvo Releases Official Photos of the All-New C70

  1. 07-15-2005 12:44 AM #1

Irvine CA – Volvo Cars of North America, LLC (VCNA) today released the first official photos of the all-new C70. With its innovative three-piece retractable hardtop, the second generation C70 is a car that provides the customer with premium choices.

(All vehicles have compromises). . With the top up, it's a sporty coupe with dramatic, head-turning style. With the top stowed below the rear deck, it's an open-air convertible that invites wind-in-the-hair fun and excitement. What makes the all-new C70 even more appealing is that there is room for four people.

    I second that.
Other than that it's a beautiful car and I don't even care for convertibles.

SCHA-WING! I love it, I love it, I love it!

But they should call it the C50 or C40, because it's part of the same family as the S40 and V50. It has nothing to do with the S60 or V70.

  7. 07-15-2005 04:10 AM #7
Funny thing I've noticed, all the people who own newer Volvos seem to love it. But people who own older S70s, V70s and 850s seem to hate it.

  8. 07-15-2005 04:11 AM #8
    Price guesstimation?

  9. 07-15-2005 04:13 AM #9
I was told a while back it would be starting at $49,995 CAD, not sure what that is in USD. A simple currency conversion at http://www.oanda.com should work.

I like the car, but I don't really dig the huge rear end sloping into a lower front. To each their own.

The hardtop is definitely sportier than the convertible. The convertible looks like something a middle-aged woman would drive her poodle around in.

  11. 07-15-2005 05:44 AM #11
A folding hardtop that actually looks pretty good. A lot of the folding hardtops over here in europe (peugeot 307, Renault magane) have a look about them that just isn't right. That C70 looks great to my eyes though

  12. 07-15-2005 08:50 AM #12
From the A pillar back it´s looking great! Especially the tail lights. Even though I can see why, I really think they should have redesigned the front to match the rear.
Also I think they should have named it C40...

  13. 07-15-2005 08:53 AM #13
I agree about the large end leading to low front, it looks like the old C70 rear with a new S40 front end. Dont get me wrong, I love the car, I also agree it looks a tad better with the top up than it does top down, but I am impressed. Is the C70 a dedicated drop top, or will they ever bring back the solid top coupe?

  14. 07-15-2005 09:31 AM #14
I want a hard top Coupe - not a Convertible.

Finally a convertible that looks good with the top up.

From this angle, the front end looks less of an "after thought":

BUT, from this angle, it seems as though they were forced to incorporate the S40 front end design and not balance with the rear. Maybe its the headlight design that doesn't fit.

I'll reserve final judgement until I see it in person. I would have thought the size of the S60 ( aka a "C60" ) would have been a better choice for an adult convertible. But if they are shooting for the 25-35 single female, she might not have enough room for friends and luggage on that trip to South Beach.

Does this new "C40" offer any more interior room than the previous C70?

With only 218hp will it be performance competitive with Saab, BMW? Hopefully we'll be able to get some seat time and do some comparisons.

  16. 07-15-2005 10:43 AM #16
Lovely exterior, but the interior resembles a 40 series too strongly.

  17. 07-15-2005 11:08 AM #17
I'd buy it. Sure beats an Audi A4 cabrio V6 with the same power, a cloth roof, and another 10-15 grand on the price tag.

I am glad that they incorporated the corporate front end into this car...it is the back that seems a little off to me, now I understand the rise to the rear especially when considering where to put that slick hardtop, but the rear bumper extends so far out...my only gripe on design...otherwise beautiful execution...btw Dual pipes??!!! yeah nice

This car is stunning!! With the top up, it looks absolutely awesome. I love the low-roof. The back is awesome looking. In that first picture, front three-quarter, it looks like the front is smaller than the rear. But in other pictures that doesn't appear to be the case. Must just be an awkward angle.

The small engine is definitely a disappointment, though. I'd assume this'll probably cost a little bit more than an '04 C70 HPT. It's got a lot less power than that model, or any of it's competitors! The new BMW 330Ci will have 255 hp, the new Audi 3.2 will have 250 (with the new V6), the new Saab 9-3 Aero will have 250, and the CLK350 has 268 hp. With 218 hp (and I'd assume more weight because of the roof), this car will almost definitely lack in the performance department. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

By the way, I like that they shot those pictures in my hometown of Miami . Of course it's appropriate to have a convertible in Miami!

I like the side angle profile with the top up. Looks like the original C70 which was gorgeous. I don't like the front end. I don't like the interior...it's like the S40/V50 which is volvo's entry level. I thought the interior would be more distinctive and base one the S60/S80. OH well...overall it looks good, but I think I still prefer the original C70 coupe.

Ok...deep breath. those were just my first impressions. I think overall it will be a very beautiful car. I had an '01 C70 coupe that was absolutely gorgeous. I always am on the lookout for a C70 coupe as that car was my favorite car I've ever had. It's just my taste that I don't care for the S40 interior. Maybe the C70 interior will have some nice differences.

If they come out with an R version for 2007, that is my next car after
    my V70R comes off lease.

Otherwise, I will get a used M3, and sell it when the R verison comes out.

Clearly one can already see differences in the interior door grips. I'd love to know what the button on the top of both front seats just outboard of the headrests is for.

hmm, im disappointed in volvo. thought it would have more grunt. well, there goes some of the male market.

  29. 07-15-2005 06:45 PM #29
Well... it's OK looking... I mean, after all I do have a S40. I can't say I hate the front or interior now, can I?

I think it should look more like a coupe with the longer front end, like the original C70, the short front end makes it a bit too compact looking. And with the top up, that long shoulder that goes from front to back along the side doesn't seem to mesh well with the more curvy C-pillar. But I like the rear of the car... that looks neat.

And I know Volvo is trying very hard to keep a common design theme among the cars, but I think with coupes, they can ease the rules a bit and do something different and a bit more daring. I'm not a big fan of the cut the sedan in half, rip the top off, and presto!

Anyways, maybe there's a C70R in the works???

Rear window control? I don't see one on the side of the rear seats.

Interesting rear belts - they're inboard. Are the little holes in the side rails just behind the front seats for a tonneau cover perhaps?

I own both and my initial response is HATE.
Perhaps in person it may be better but it's a seemingly very feminine car right now

Well I don't think it's ugly at all...quite beautiful imo, although I do think they went easy with the engine. But I think people are missing the point here...this isn't supposed to be a "racer's" convertible. This is a Volvo, and it's more about elegence than muscle I think.

/shrug, I guess some of you were hoping for a little sports convertible. But this car isn't feminine (that would be a Miata).
