Congratulations Roxanne! May it bring you nothing but happiness. It's funny you mention the spending spree because whenever I look at the Excel spreadsheet of the money I spent on my 850 in the year 2016, I get numb and lose consciousness. Then I drive the car and that feel good therapeutic vibe and feeling and smell just makes everything go away.

Also, roof racks are cool. I did what is probably the unadvised approach and I got a rack brand new from Thule which was really expensive. But the funny story was when I was searching for a bike rack to attach to my roof rack so I can carry my road bike. I remember scouring Craigslist for a while until I found a bike rack that I was interested in and when I was messaging the seller back and forth, he was like, "Yeah but I want to warn you before you come and maybe I could drop the price for you a little bit because of this, but I got this bike rack from the Volvo dealership with my previous car so unfortunately which you might not like, it's going to have the Volvo branding on it." Haha couldn't have asked for a better transaction...

I'm not sure which roof racks I want a go with, ScotBrick offered me some really nice ones but I like the XC style ones too. Which look nicer? Also which are more sturdy or hold more?
Upon thinking about mods and things, I went decal shopping earlier which was a dumb move, but I noticed how few and far in between all the nice ones are. I don't want to dress it up like a teenager would but I would like a nice Volvo Ocean Race decal somewhere.
Also... Sound. I have the base radio as well as some lame new radio in there with an aux cord but I'm not impressed with it. I need to hit up the radio forum.

Get a Grom once you get the 815 back in there. If you don't find that to be adequate, start building a Dolby setup.

I like 850 rails best on a P80 estate. The XC ones look too chunky to me and don't fit with the otherwise relatively minimalist lines of the P80, plus I just in general have an aversion to things that look way overbuilt, which they do to me. But it really comes down to taste. Plenty of people like the XC rails, too.

What kind of decals are you looking for? Trying to make it look like a sleeper? Print out one of these and stick it in your back window and that's like -100 bhp right there:

I figure between my Bernie sticker, SIPS sticker, Mystic Seaport sticker, and Herreshoff Marine Museum sticker in the T-5R, I'm probably at around -150 bhp, because what could possibly be slower than socialism, safety, and really old boats? It helps the shock factor when you hit that uphill entrance ramp and walk away from that loser in the Accord who's been tailgating you the last 5 miles when you've successfully made them think that you are a typical Volvo driver.

If making it look like a sleeper isn't what you're going for, well, I can't help much there. My experience is only in building collections of sleeper stickers.

I personally like the xc roof racks better than the stock 850 ones, easier to find bars for and no rubber on the ends of them that get gone while driving.

For a radio the 815 is basic sounding, I'd look for a sc901 setup and some aftermarket speakers with a c70 amp pushing them. That'll be my next audio move is installing the c70 amp to my sc901. Good car you got to have a nice ride, plenty of potential

Agreed. Late p80 V70 racks look very good imho. I say late because my 99 T5M came with the "xc" style racks from the factory. The annoyance is that they're only good for 120 lbs total (held on by six small screws into the roof) while the door mounted ones are good for 250 lbs. Unfortunately you cant have both on the car at the same time they occupy the same space. I think for ascetics the longer "xc" style are better suited to a wagon, hence why i added them to my pewter. Really helps the wind look more natural as well. Cross bars are available for them both the skinny ones that were factory and heavy duty ones made by thule for volvo.

Ive got it even better/worse. Dirty pewter wagon with rusty tailgate and only a V70 badge. From the back that car is booooring and looks like its slower than a sea slug.....until I rip up the ramp and do 40-80 in 4 seconds. Thats why the front end is all business. If you look hard enough (and no-one ever has) you'd see the massive full size & front mount Do88 intercooler hiding under the grille if you know what those kind of things are...

Still, I usually keep it under 80 on the highway and don't do anything stupid so i'm virtually invisible. Pretty much cant drive in the left hand lane I could be doing 90 mph and people would still have to pass me.

Today I'm getting some of the deferred maintenance handled while I'm at work, I can't wait until it's done (belt and oil leak and I'd like to see about whether or not it needs shocks or something) then maybe I can go for an inspection somehow later in the week, maybe Saturday? Then again, the roads are a bit icy and I won't be able to do a whole lot in terms of joyriding, but at least that's another task down. That VCOA sticker is worth about +30 bhp

I'm not so sure. Most people don't seem to equate cream yellow with performance, and they definitely don't know what a T-5R badge means (why I still think your T5 badge delete is kinda pointless). I get a lot of people telling me they love the color, but none of them have ever asked me if it's fast. I also get a lot of angry people behind me when I'm in the left lane. I can be actively passing people at slightly over the limit and all of a sudden I'll have some moron in a corolla or something who's, uh, making some gestures and sitting like a length behind me. It will be interesting to see if it's any different in the 609 R.

Are you getting the cam seals done while they already have the belt off I hope? Good preventative maintenance right there.

I didn't feel any problems with the shocks when I drove it, but then I drove it on pretty decent roads. Did the trip home reveal additional issues?

Yeah, they're doing an entire once-over for me and I did tell them about the seals. I brought it in around 8:30 and my guy got there at 9 so it shouldn't be much longer, I'm here till 5:30 or so and it should be all set by about 3 or so.

About five minutes after you dipped out, my mother arrived to drive it home and she LOOOOOOOOOOVED it but she felt it could benefit from being a smoother ride if I get the shocks tended to with the town roads and all. It couldn't hurt to see, I guess. She was bummed she missed you, she wanted to thank you. She hopes she gets another opportunity to say hi.

What shocks are in it now? If you have Sachs that's as soft as it gets for a stock setup. If your car was optioned with Bilstein TCs, they would ride a bit more firm than Sachs. I hear H&R springs have a lower spring rate and will also improve the ride from stock if not paired with a performance shock. That being said, I'd wait on the shocks if there is a problem and do them yourself. It's not a critical issue the same way the belts and seals are.

If all goes well with the belts and seals today, it's probably time to start thinking about what oil you want to run. Do you know if the PO was running synthetic or regular?

Shock test is simple. Bounce the car individually at each corner. The response should be about the same. If not, that shock is weak.

Sadly the best ride you'll get out of these cars is the stock sachs shock/strut. Tires make a huge difference as well. Ironically my 16" snow tires paired with sachs/bilstein touring ride harder than my 17" pilot super sport summer tires paired with koni adjustable sports and h&r springs.

H&R springs are the same effective spring rate as stock, but that means they're stiffer because theyre shorter. Lowering springs will make the car handle and look significantly better.

T-gul yellow didn't keep me from getting rear ended on Sunday afternoon. Old guy just didn't see me stopped and braked way too late. Even econoboxes like the Civic that hit me are much faster than they used to be and peoples' driving skills generally suck. Just a minor tap on the bumper but enough to put a few divots in it and warrant a new cover. Took the car to the body shop to get an estimate and the autobody guy says "how could they have not seen you with this color!?!"

My favorite bumper sticker is "My golden retriever (or insert favorite breed here) is smarter than your honor student", lol.

These cars do ride firm. Test the rebound on the shocks. When you push down on the corner of the car, the car should return to normal ride height and not keep bouncing. Also check to see if any are leaking.

It might be an axle issue or something too, I don't really know yet, I'll get a full diagnostic sheet relatively soon when I go to grab it -- I just want it to last me comfortably for a while. I'm sick of car shopping.

I was told however it would need exceedingly less maintenance than my '02 which was a relief. I forget who it was who said I'd need to put it maybe 1-3k to make it mint, that's about what I was quoted, lol.

      I'm down!

Don't we all? Lol. I dunno, I think I'm more politically aligned with my bio father than my mother. It's pretty easy to piss my dad off in other ways... like buying a car without consulting him first

If it weren't for my dad, I wouldn't have a car. I'm more socially left, and fiscally right. He's right entirely, but we put aside our differences and get on with it, haha!

I don't want to get keyed lol......that'll fly down south where you are but probably isn't the best choice for Boston. That's the great thing about a Bernie sticker is that you can take it pretty much anywhere in the country and almost nobody totally hates you. I almost took mine off before we took the T-5R to TN and then I ended up getting more compliments on it (and the car, too, for that matter) there than I do here....like dafuq ?

I never put any political stuff on my cars.

As for Bernie, his sticker is neutral because everyone feels bad about what happened.

There's people out there that take that stuff very seriously and will damage your car which is why I don't openly display anything except funny stuff or Volvo stuff. The T-Rex chasing the stick figure family on the back of my P3 is about as "edgy" as i get.

Plus, why ruin a perfectly good car with stupid political stickers? Never mind that they will be out of date within 4 years.
