That's a pretty big chip to leave hanging around in a motor build, lucky it was too big to find its way to a bearing though.

And to think I was worried about pet hair getting in my motor, lol. Who did the work that left that in there for you?

Phhh. I have a German shepherd, I know all about that pet hair demon.

I bought the motor second hand, so I'm unsure of who did the work. Just happy that we decided to tear it down for a visual inspection and caught some stowaways.

Whole thing is being sent to get a nice cleaning and other secret squirrel stuff .

      Stay tuned.

When I pulled the cam cover off, I found it in one of the oil passages. Definitely could have done some damage. One cylinder gas some pretty deep grooves in it (catches a finger nail), one has a hot spot and the deck of the block was definitely not cut properly. Maybe too fast of a feed rate with a CBN head (visible cutting marks)?? I can take some detailed pics once I bring it to my machinist.

Pretty sure I was showing you how to pull a cam cover without damaging anything. You broke your finger loosening a head bolt before Bryson finished the rest 😉

Wasn't intentional lol. When the bolt broke, his hand smashed into the head with the breaker bar on the other side of it. Pretty brutal amount of pain you experience when that happens 😂

I've never seen any head/block surfacing cutter make a perfectly flat surface, too much flex and resonance in the machines for it to ever be the case. The fact that some shops run some pretty fast cut rates since time is money certainly doesn't help either.

Tis the reason why all motors I've worked on get a good lapping with a flat plate on all their critical sealing surfaces to even up the microscopic highs and lows, but its surprising how many shops never bother for most run of the mill applications.

Are there any signs the deck plate has unevenly distorted the upper cylinder bores, causing uneven cylinder or ring wear?

Tis the reason why all motors I've worked on get a good lapping with a flat plate on all their critical sealing surfaces to even up the microscopic highs and lows, but its surprising how many shops never bother for most run of the mill applications.

Are there any signs the deck plate has unevenly distorted the upper cylinder bores, causing uneven cylinder or ring wear?
Everything seemed in good working order stealthy, apart from the stowaways... The technical stuff is better suited to be answered by Ben since i'm not in the know of internal engine knowledge . We shall see what Carlquist says when the motor gets dropped off next week.
