      ETM Replacement Over $800??

Finally got around to getting the ETM replaced on my 1999 V70R. Runs great and all but wound up being over $800...does that sound right? The guy I have work on it has been trustworthy in the past, but claimed "shipping prices" went up on it so it jumped from his previous estimation of $650. Did I just get ripped ? Gotta say, the car runs great now but daaaang....

Damn. Labor is four bolts, a clamp on the cold side tubing and a electrical connector.

I don't know about taken, depends on the unit used. If it was a xemodex pre-programmed unit, those are $550. He probably charged 2 hours labor which is fair and probably close to book time. Then with tax and shop fees you're not too far from $850. I would expect to pay at least $750 for an ETM at an Indy. At Volvo I'm sure you'd be close if not over 1k.

2 hours of book time? Its 20 minutes if you stop to refill your coffee.....

Yeah even if you remove the OTE pipe and radiator fan for more room it's still under an hour.

How long it takes and how much labor is charged to do the job are two different things. I don't know what the actual book time is for an etm swap but I would guess it's at least an hour and might be more.

Yeah book time has to be over an hour. But In reality, if you've never done it you can still have it back together in about an hour. Especially since you're not like cleaning the etm or anything. Just a quick swap. You need like 2 tools to do this job. Shame you payed that much.

Thanks for the input, guys. I appreciate it a ton. I asked him what was put in it but haven't heard back yet. How would you address this with a guy you've been going to for a few years? Kinda bummed after all this time, it sounds like he took me to the cleaners...

Did he give you an itemized bill or receipt?

I pay $550 for a new ETM, then one hour to install and initiate and about $40 for the software so your price was not really out of line.
However with these now very old cars I would have given a used one a shot for a couple of hundred bucks or less.
      No software is necessary

The price you paid was not out of the stratosphere or anything. In fact, when I bought my first VR, a 2000 model back in 2007, the list price on a new factory unit alone was more than what you paid in total. And the outfit that became Xemodex was still experimenting with their manufacturing process, so there was no real alternative at that time for most folks. Fortunately, mine was still covered by the extended 10 yr/100K warranty they ended up giving for the electronic cow pies that were originally installed.
How long I intend to keep to keep the vehicle usually informs these decisions when I have to make them. In this case, you probably could have had the superior option for somewhat less dough.
If you had gone the dealer route, you would have a lifetime Volvo warranty on it. Oh well. I can say, the factory one that I had installed at the dealer on my old VR was still in good working order after 8 years - until some lady in a minivan decided that I had driven that car long enough, and took it out.
