It was amazing yesterday! Had a lot of fun. Did 3 laps in total. Had a small problem on the second lap in 'Hatzenbach', understeer...followed by heaven oversteer on the curbstones . The crowd loved it .

Thanks to the sponsors for the nice cap en big R!
Thanks to Danny for the lap in the S60R!

See y'all next time! End of next month ?

Here are the videos... pics probably won't make it till tomorrow...

On the first day, a group of motorcyclists and a modified SRT-4 tagged along with us up to the ring from BK. I pulled away from the SRT-4 easily on the Autobahn, and we did a coordinated start side by side, so no uncontrolled variables. He said he couldn't maintain boost power for long for some reason, whatever...

Anyways, the motorcycles put on a show for us... (1.45 MB)

Here is one of our new members, Chris in his Electric Silver '06.

    http://ss.otheron.com/rkelly/video/EleSil_S60R.MOV

Here is how to drive the Ring in an S60R, pretty fast lap, especially since it is wet. Course, it helps if you are Florian with hundreds of laps on the ring and a professional driver certification. Thanks again man, it was so cool to see what my car could do, and so much fun passing all those people. (124 MB, so hope you have a high speed connection)

Caught Florian in his excellent 850... (2.52 MB)

    http://ss.otheron.com/rkelly/video/BrunchenFlo.mov

We got a fair amount of scares and excercise as BMW after BMW learned that RWD does not work on mud. So many came so close to sliding into our Rs...

    http://ss.otheron.com/rkelly/video/bmw_mud.MOV

Here is Denny tearing up the track with Kevin hot on his heels and me riding shot gun. Kevin said - "he seems to be pulling away on the longer straights" I said - "well, the titanium paint on your wheels is heavier than the silver, and you know what rotating mass does to acceleration". It was either that or my 200+ pounds that made a difference.

    http://ss.otheron.com/rkelly/video/Devin1.mov -- (7.25 MB)
    http://ss.otheron.com/rkelly/video/Devin2.mov -- (16.1 MB)

    http://ss.otheron.com/rkelly/video/Devin5.mov -- (7.56 MB)
    http://ss.otheron.com/rkelly/video/Devin6.mov -- (9.77 MB)

Here is me following Denny and Kevin through the very scenic town of Adenau... we never make it past Giulia's pizzeria, actually, a very cool town.

    http://ss.otheron.com/rkelly/video/CityRs.mov -- (4.56 MB)

Florian, e-mail me your address so I can send you that DVD.

    stay tuned for pics...

Yes that is him, British plates are yellow in back...

Let me know if you find any pics of me on the track, I don't really know the sites to check. There was that one guy that was taking all the face shots in the early section.

OK, have to show you these, very, very cool. Amazing what you can do by just keeping the shutter open... Little town of Altenahr, under a castle.

You know, it was my car, and I wasn't scared. Only slid a tiny bit once. I think I slide more when its dry...

Worst moment was when ass cut us off going into karussell, that was not cool. The M3 that caught back up to us really impressed me, gotta have a lot of ring experience to drive in the wet that fast in that car.

I think it was a combination of a little more weight and the fact that I put in 95ron petrol. I noticed a difference on the way home by filling up with the 98ron. Oh well.... I still did well!

BTW, found a nice picture of your car..... I think Flo was driving though, nonetheless.

Don't you just hate it when people are standing too close to your car...

I would like to thank Kelly, Johann, Denny, Kevin, Florian, Emiel, Brian (and all the others whose
name I forgot ) for a fan-tas-tic day. I really enjoyed it you guys! My compliments!

Emiel's 854 T-5, Kevin's red S60R (God I love that colour), and the Swede demon II.
Three cars, three different experiences (from a passengers point of view).

Emiel showed me that a good 850 T-5(R) may not be underestimated.
Kevin showed me that the S60R can be so incredibly fast!
Funny to experience the difference in driving between Kev and Denny; especially on the braking...

The Swededemon II is...mindblowing...I said to Johann (whilst driving through Hatzenbach):
"What on earth have you created man! This is insane!"...
But my god I loved every second of it!

There's only one bad thing about these days...They end so quickly..

    Remond...

(I'll be there next time...With my own -beloved- T-5R Estate)

    Very nice videos Kelly!
The lap with Florian in your S60...looked in my rearview mirror, "wtf those cars are coming up fast!" Great stuff !
Looks like Flo also had problems with the white Opel Omega , that guy drove like a madman....

    Emiel...

Ok, so finally I am also back home in Munich after family visit in Luxemburg and Ring on Saturday. After “Easter Church Service”, did not make it early enough for coming up on Sunday as well. I wonder what the weather was like on the Ring, as at least in Luxemburg it was raining the whole day.

Yes, and a big THANKS to Kelly, Jessy and all other guys (and wife’s) which helped to make that day a success, as it was a lot of work to buy all that succulent food and set up the nice Camping spot.

Kelly and Jessy I really hope that you will find R-Crazy that is going to hold up the Spandau Gang in order to have some more of those nice meetings after you desert from your Base. I am sure that some of the stuff / money / food is left to start organizing the next meeting on Nordschleife.

For those who are interested I post here a GPS trace of my Lap (85% of possibilities) was blocked in second half by a BMW 330i which did not want to give way and started slowly to let pass a bunch of bikes and fast cars.

  22. 04-18-2006 04:14 PM #127
The height measurements appear very spot on!

Which Garmin do you use for this?

Thanks for the great day btw! Sunday was wet in the morning but it dried up during the day.
We managed some higher speeds as recorded on your GPS.

Ok, so here goes the first day...

Threw my new Takspeed pedals on... my super glue adventures are worth a whole post in themselves, but lets just say this is still a work in progress. Looks sweet IMO, thanks for coming up with nib options Alan.

The world according to Volvo, not Black and white, but varying shades of gray...

Motrocyclist doing wheelies at 80 mph, quite impressive, see video in post above. A couple of the bikers were not allowed on the ring after driving all the way up there, one didn't have a license plate, and others exhausts were too loud. No sweat off my sack, hate bikes on the ring, they are quicker in straights, but can't carry my speed through the corners. And they buzz around like flies...

    Ricky

    Steve

    Chris

Modified SRT-4 I walked away from

Think this is all the P2s except Sean who showed up later...

Denny with his new 5 fingered love...

    Much discussion about '06 differences

    The loot won on Friday...

Fernand won the $50 IPD gift certificate and a swedespeed henley.

Jesse won the Takspeed Shims and an R pin

Steve sporting sweet IPD R hat and Volvo for life T-shirt, Sean with ViVA $50 gift certificate

Jann won the R Watch from Autozentrum 2000

Ricky won one set of the IPD strut brace pre-tensioner bushings

    Johann completely disrespecting his paint

    Johann expressing his love...

Bryan's incredibly overengineered airbox mod with a completely new airflow management system and drainage system

Wim's Cosmos Blue 2.5T AWD with lots of mods... asked dealer and those black Xenon's are same price, E758.00 but in system it says they aren't for R model, not sure if they won't work, or if they just weren't sold with it. Wim got every ounce out of his RICA tuned 2.5T, and every ounce of sweat out of Denny and Kevin when they rode with him

Someone needs to tell Bilstein they know nothing about making springs, look at all those dead coils

    Packing up and heading out...

    Dinner in Altenahr

    Next up, Sunday's pics...

The used Garmin was a Forerunner 301.

I use it normally for jogging and biking.... it is pretty accurate but takes a measure only every 10 sec or so, that's the reason why you don't have all the details as it extrapolates between the measurements. The top speed of the run was 184,4km/h and the official average was 109,4km/h. The speed's are more accurate as they are monitors nearly continuously.

Most of the time I reset my "Average Speed" right as I'm going under the bridge, monitor as I'm driving, and take note as I cross under the gantry.

Anything above 65 mph average means I'm doing good (for me). Above 70 mph means it was a very good lap.

OK, here goes... pics from day 2!

The weather wasn't great, which I didn't mind. Meant there was parking in the main lot, and that most of the rear drive cars weren't on the track. I actually really enjoy the damp track because of lack of traffic, even if I can't push it as hard.

This used to be an 850 I think, now it is Florian's race car...

And here is Florian's car getting back to its roots...

After I took a lap with Florian providing pointers to me, we swapped seats and he had a blast (see above videos/pics) tackling the track driving Inga. Said it was great to drive, and easily caught and passed Johann and Emiel - gotta love AWD and 350hp in the wet.

Here we see that even M5 taxis get their fuel one hose at a time...

    Johann's speed demon

The loot for day two, we went to Giulia's pizzeria, awesome place they remember us from last year and gave us our own room.

Jesse making off with the last calendar...

Remond won the Kienzle watch and R pin

Emiel doing it up gangsta style with giant IPD R and swedespeed hat

Kevin snagged the IPD end links and tje ViVA performance $50 gift certificate

Denny took home the last swedespeed shirt and the $50 IPD gift certificate

Johann and Florian showing off their IPD T-shirts (Johann having a bad-hair day...

I got the IPD blue engine mount bushing and the excellent R, gonna make it into a hood ornament questions for Scott - any idea how blue engine mount compares to black evolve? Will it work on my '04?

    Easter Mass at Nurburgringerdom

Kevin showing that even a lamborghini can look lame in tangelo orange...

Kevin/Denny - this is a keeper for you guy's scrapbook, show the grankids you were cool once, hung out at the Grun Holle

The inside of "it makes my eyes bleed" Evo...

Look, Evolve H5s on an Evo

    Nice asses

The (R's) cabin's color scheme, with warm tones abutting harsh ones, was inspired by the silver/cream gas tank on Philippe Starck's motorcycle design for Aprilia.

On a Wim, took a corner too fast ...

Look JRL, OZ Ultraleggera's do come in graphite for 18"

Dinner at Denny/Kevin's very cool little B&B in Leimbach, next town past Adenau. One of the owners is an American woman originally from Chicago. She was a professional motorcycle racer, whole B&B is decorated in racing memorabilia.

Double walled tips stayed silver, except at the end where the inner and outer merge to be rolled...

    Time for exhaust #6

    Again, thanks to the sponsors:
    Swedespeed
    IPD
    Takspeed
    ViVA Performance
    Autozentrum 2000

    Everyone who came out

Florian for making the whole GTG worth it by finally teaching me how to drive on the ring (need your address for the DVD)

Jesse for the logistics and cooking

And special thanks to Fernand and Denny, who together provided the budget for the food/drinks/supplies!

btw, spoke with the wife, and we both decided that we should ship the Honda first so it is waiting for us in Florida. So, I'm heading back to the ring, anyone else gonna be there this Sunday?

Don't forget, it was the first time he had ever driven a P2 R, it was my car, and I was sitting in passenger seat.
