SRS - AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT

hmm...probably worth taking to the dealer

I'm at dealership at this moment to have this checked out. Will post back what they do to resolve situation and what caused the display message in first place. The dealerships are becoming more and more Internet aware for customer lounges these days.
My dealership now provides Broadband and Wireless hot spot - about time too.

Re: SRS - AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT (barrysharp)

FYI...

OK - so after about 15 mins they indicated the Driver's Information Module - DIM (it's inside of dashboard console/pod) has malfunctioned and needs to be replaced. Airbags aren't functional while this DIM is out-of-service. Parts have to be ordered and will take some 1.5 hrs to install behind dashboard console.

Car under warranty but would cost some $810 plus tax if out of warranty.

As I was having my ipod interface installed behind the center console, the ac module was disconnected and I got that same message too. The dealership was aware that this might happen and they just reset it. No harm done.

Hmmm - in my case they claim the DIM is faulty and will be replaced. For you it seems they simply reset something. Strange.

It really freaks me out that Volvo did not design a stand-alone system for something as critical as the airbags. To think that my safety and the safety of my passengers is dictated by a display module, the stereo system and the climate control (probably a few other components we don't know about, too) scares the you-know-what out of me!!! Volvo should have anticipated that a percentage of its owners would want to replace the stereo system during the ownership cycle. To require a dealer computer fix to do so is idiotic in my opinion. Shame on you, Volvo!

$810 to replace the DIM? I'm starting to wonder if it's worth keeping this car once the warranty expires, although my car has been for the most part bullet-proof so far (yawn, knock on wood).

Re: SRS - AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT (RainyS60R)

OK, I'm prefacing this with a standard disclaimer (don't want to get sued). I am not a Volvo engineer and you should not assume the following information to necessarily be 100% correct. Always talk to/take your car in to/ the dealer when you get a warning message on the DIM - especially when it comes to SRS!

The critical portions of the SRS system are self contained (crash sensors, explosive charges, etc). i.e. they are connected directly to the SRS module under the center console.

The SRS and the DIM communicate over the low speed CAN network. It just so happens that the low speed CAN network wiring goes through the climate control module connector. i.e. it's a pass-through connection and also provides the CCM a point of connection on the network.

What happens is the SRS module has the "responsibility" for determining if the SRS light on the DIM needs to be illuminated or not. The SRS module expects the DIM to indicate over the low speed CAN network whether the SRS light is currently illuminated or not. If the SRS module does not see the status message from the DIM, the SRS module stores a fault code - which unlike other codes will NOT simply clear after so many engine restarts. When communication is restored between the DIM and SRS modules, the DIM sees the status message from the SRS module that it has a stored fault code and in turn displays that lovely SRS - AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT message.

It is extremely doubtful that unplugging the CCM and getting that error message renders SRS inoperable (these guys are not dumb). However, you still need to have the message looked at - could have other more critical issues.

Would that be the trick? I mean, I have the light on right now because I removed the A/C panel. NOW, had I discoed the batt. and let it sit for tem minutes and then removed the panel, the SRS light would not have come on?

You can also trigger this message if you remove your deck without disconnecting the battery

I'm going to second this question...

I am about to correct the embarrassment that is my dash after the dealer trashed it (and left the stereo/climate units crooked in the opening). It makes sense that disconnecting the battery would do the trick.

Frank, was this your experience when your new stereo was installed? No idiot lights encountered when the battery was disconnected prior to removal?

All I can tell you is that the stereo installer guys set this code off twice by not disconnecting the battery first. It wasn't until later that I found out what needed to be done to avoid it.

That's what happened to me when they installed my XM radio.

Me too. I had to take it in to the dealer and have it reset.

Re: SRS - AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT (barrysharp)

Sad news I'm afraid. Also I must apologise as this issue was with my MY2003 XC70 which has a similar equipment level as my S60R so presumably applies to it as well - so thought it appropriate to post here to share the experience.

An update...

So car was operating without problem last Friday after picking car up from my dealership who made repairs on the "SRS-Airbag Service Urgent" display issue. The car was used every day since then, driven some 250 miles without any issues and with one fuel tank fill up and today it all broke lose again with my wife driving the car around town some. After extracting all of the grundgy details from my wife here's what I've come up with.

1. Wife started car today after it being parked in garage all night. The car was fully functional and without any issues as she drove it some 30 miles to her destination. As she was starting to locate a parking place she noticed a complete blackout on the driver's dash display - speedometer not working, tach not working fuel gauge not working, temp gauge not working, odometer not working(blank), indicator green arrows not working but indicator lights were, radio working, climate control system working, electric windows working and headlights working.

2. Wife found parking place and parked car. Turned engine off and exited the car. The remote would not lock the car so she manually locked it.

3. Wife returned to car some 45 mins later and was able to open it with remote fob Unlock button. Engine was started and ALL the driver's dash displays were fully operational EXCEPT that now the "SRS-Airbag Service Urgent" was now displaying in the computer readout display.

4. At some time after starting the car (wife believes it was quite soon after) the driver's dash display went blank as before with absolutely nothing registering nor displayed.

5. Wife tried to get hold of me but I had left my Cell at home and I was tooling around town and was completely out-of-touch.

6. Wife was very nervous about driving the car knowing that Airbags were inoperative and there was no telling what speed she was driving nor if the engine was overheating etc etc etc. (Lesson learned here is to have the Volvo dealership's phone number in glove box for such occasions)

7. Wife drove car to another location near to home (some 30 miles), stopped and turned engine off and was able to lock car using the remote Lock button.

8. Wife returns to car and it unlocks with Remote and everything is in complete working order but still with the "SRS-Airbag Service Urgent" message being displayed.

9. Wife gets home and parks in garage and tells me her story.

10. I use my Remote to start car and drive it about some and all is working correctly with the sole exception of the "SRS-Airbag Service Urgent" being displayed.

At this point it's pretty darn clear to me that Volvo service last Friday messed things up and that it being a coincident is just too far fetched IMO.

This is very disappointing (mildly speaking now) and will now have to spend time again getting this problem resolved.

I'm wondering if this had been an out of warranty repair last Friday would I now be on the hook to get this follow-on problem resolved.

I thought that you could remove the deck without disconnecting the battery as long as you do NOT turn the key to the accessory position. I removed the deck to hardwire my radar detector without a problem (did not disconnect battery, but also did not have key in the ignition). However, my brother turneded his key with the deck out of the dash in order to test the connection to his detector and he got the SRS light. But, of course, if you want to be safe, disconnect the battery to be sure....

Could be........I recall giving my gauge a test run by turning the key before I put everything back together. Maybe, had I not turned the key, everything would have been fine? Your thought does make sense, although I'm not going to try it after my dealer charged me 22 quid for the reset.

The car was in service dept all day today and they tore out the dash and center console and several side panels, talked with Sweden techies but found no solution. They have a call in to the East coast specialist and now await until Monday for further help in figuring things out.

Apparently this problem is rare but not unheard of.

Keeping fingers crossed on this one.

Re: SRS - AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT (RainyS60R)

Triggering this warning is inevitable for some models, as for example it's impossible to remove the AC pannel without putting the GT cars in Drive and you can only do this with the contact on.

Had this happen twice while playing around to install the iPod last year, the shop guys said there was no 'clean' way around it (perhaps disconnect battery, but doesn't that trigger other things like alarm? ;-)

A simple reset via the ODB port solves it, altough I did not check if the airbags actually work

Final update...

After several days of instrumenting the car and driving it some 160 miles the technician and Volvo engineers found root cause to be a malfunctioning control module for driver side front seat power seat module. It was replaced and problem has been resolved.

Apparently what was happening was that multiple fault codes for the low speed CAN communication were being issued from all modules except the power seat module. With the assistance from the Volvo factory technical specialist running OHM checks over the low speed CAN circuit it was found that the 64 OHM was within specs. They resoldered junction points 53/435 and 53/438 but low speed CAN still failed. They checked wire harness where it bends at the seat anchor and they weren't kinked. They drove the car 160 miles with the power seat module unplugged and logged no low speed CANBUS failures. Thus they concluded the power seat module was corrupting the low speed CANBUS. The replaced the power seat module and reloaded software and problem was resolved. Most of this verbage was taken from the repair invoice and interpreted by me after talking with the service technician.

This whole experience tells me to buy an extended warranty within next 5000 miles before my new car warranty expires. This repair job would have cost around $1500 parts and labor.

My 2000 S80 lost its Climate Control Module last year. The dealer said I needed a new one for $1300 plus. So I bought our fire chiefs Crown Vic at auction for my wife to drive through the winter. She refused to be cold and without her heated seats. Anyway I finally decided to take it out and have my nephew, electronic genus, take it apart and see if anything could be soldered. The only thing found was the unsoldered sensor wires at the little vent hole that sets in front of a tiny fan that pulls cabin air across the sensor. It was too fragile to resolder so I determined to buy a used unit and remove the little fan sensor unit and screw it into the CCM replacing the old unit. The dealer had told me that a used unit could not be programmed into the car.

So I called around for used units and several offered to sell me one for $140 or so. Then LUCKY ME I found this auto salvage in Centura Wisconsin, and a great honest guy who told me that if he had one with the same serial number as my old one off taped to the back of the unit it would work. WOW. And it did. He thought I would have to go to dealer to have it programmed. So I installed it and BAM it worked instantly without programming. I could not believe it.

Now after leaving the battery unplugged for 2 weeks while I waited and vacationed before installing the unit my SSR module light is on. So can I trust a dealer who either did not know or did not care. Will they "find other problems" with the SSR.

BSR has a unit that purports to reset SSR lights on Volvo and other European makes has anyone had experience with resetting SSR with a purchased code reader?

I do intend to run a little test on dealers and indys around to see if they can fix a install a used CCM. Maybe some of u can ask around a see if anyone says sure if the serial numbers match between your present unit and the used one u buy. And let us know the results of your survey.

Hey Guys,
I’m having a little problem in this area as well and wondering if anybody could offer some insight.

Here’s the story in a nutshell:
First off I have an 04 S60R 6 speed manual. Ok so a while ago I was doing a clutch replace and upon lowering the transmission out of place I (like an idiot) forgot to remove the rear trans-mount located directly above the steering column connection. In turn the steering shaft was pulled from the its joint. I didn’t realize I did this until after I finished the job and turned the steering wheel… too far. When I did this, I broke the clockspring behind the steering wheel and set off the “SRS Airbag – Service Urgent” warning. This also turned off all electronic functions on my steering wheel (i.e. cruise control, volume control etc.).

After double checking this with my Indy, I replaced the clockspring which fixed the electronic problem in the steering wheel, but did not turn the warning off. I read a couple things on this forum which said to have a shop simply reset the system and the warning will go away. My Indy couldn’t do this so I took it to a different Volvo specialist shop who said they could also not do it and only the dealer could fix this, which is the worst news ever.

So I took it to the dealer (which took every ounce of my being) yesterday and they said that the Control Module needs to be replaced and they need to reload the software as well:
PN: 30782384-9 Control Unit
PN: 9438415-3 SRS Reload

Now here is my question:
The Control Unit is $619.82 and the Reload is $64.49 and the labor is $470. HOLY CRAP!!!
I do most of the work on my car myself, so I have a somewhat detailed background with this car. Is it possible to replace the Control Unit myself? Or will I mess up the car more if I try? If it IS possible does anybody know of any good forums/website that talk about it? I found the Control Unit for cheaper online but I will still take it to the dealer to do the Reload. I would really like to save $500 if you know what I mean. Any help would be great guys. Thanks for your time.

*All work done on the car was with the battery disconnected.

When you were done, did you put the key back in position II before reconnecting the battery? The first time I took the dash apart on my VR, I made that mistake. Had this light pop up on the dashboard and had to get it cleared at the dealer. Can't comment on the clockspring, unfortunately, sorry.
