Thread: A milestone!! 100K mark on my 01 V70 T5 5 speed

  1. 11-15-2006 09:12 AM #1
Well, I have finally hit the 100K mark and all is well.

The car is running very well aside from the frequent bulb failures and other minor nits. The car feels as tight as it did with 20K miles and pulls as strong as ever....I swear I could get another 100K out of this car.

Has anyone else eclipsed 100K on a 01+ V70?? Would love to see how many miles everyone else has racked up!

    Thanks,

    KC

106k on 01 T5 GT. Runs/rides/looks great. Need some bushings or something replaced (coupla squeaks); getting a recurrent DSTC message but working fine. Just had serpentine belt replaced on schedule. Thinking of hi-po QBM end links, IPD sway bar and maybe some shocks--that'd be nice. Fantasize now and then about BSR ECU.

    2001 V70 T5 Auto - just cracked 112k and strong as a horse.

Glad to hear your stories! We've got a 2001 V70 T5 with 87K, lookin' forward to more years of drivin' it.

What I am interested in is the high mileage record for the A-W transmission used in the XC. So far it looks like 112K. I'm at 84K, and would like to replicate the experience that I had with a perfectly function transmission at 224K in my 850 Turbo.

As someone just nearing 40k and planning to keep my car for many more years, this is the kind of thing I like to see! Any major issues or part replacements?

Nautic Blue 2004 V70 T5M (Quaife LSD, IPD Stage 1, IPD sways + end links, Eibach springs + Bilstein HD Sport struts)
Sapphire Black 2008 C30 2.0 T5 GT (Stock until the wife changes her mind )

2004 V70AWD 148,000kms or 92,000 miles Still running very strong. it's very true what you say KCFUNK they stay so tight even after all those miles. I havn't had any problems other than rear wheel bearings had to be replaced recently but that can be expected. Man those things are expensive! But only had to replace the break pads once so far

I think I will be able to get at least 400,000kms out of her.

    Sondagsakare...

Those are lower control arm bushings...no biggy. You must do a lot of city driving or more than average turning. I will flip 94k on my 01 T5 on the way to work thursday!
We need to find out how many miles Yannis has on his? I am pretty sure he is ahead of me! One of my customers just had a 140k service...on his 3rd-4th? Volvo wgn! Keep em serviced and drive the wheels off!

    BTW...are you Scandanavian?

Glad to hear everyone chime in.....in all honesty, here are the things i've had to fix....fortunately, I had a 100K warranty, so everything was fixed along the way for $50 deductibles when neccessary....

    1) Replace turn signal bulbs every couple of months
    2) Replace swap basr bushing twice so far
    3) Sunroof motor was replaced at about 20K
    4) Had a couple issues with the security system a coupkle of years ago and the car wouldn't start with the chip in my key...they towed it in and fixed it
    5) They had to replace my climate control module about 7K miles ago...the AC wasn't working....I was glad that one was covered since it was about 1K to fix it including removing the whole dash..
    6) Other than that, I've been pretty religious about my regular service internvals (oil, timing belt, brake pads, etc.) and always take it to either the local Volvo specialist of the dealer...I think that's kept me out of trouble
    7) Oh yeah....I'm on my 4th or 5th set of tires now....my wife says I corner too fast

I often wonder how long the T5 motor will last and how many miles I will be able to get out of the original clutch, but it sure feels solid......I think that's the part that surprises me the most.....

    Thanks for all the feedback!

    KC

    117500 miles on my 01 v70 T5 and it's running smooth!
It was bought used and I suspect the previous owner wasn't too savvy on manual driving - the clutch now needs an overhaul (really the throwout bearing is going) but other than that it's great

Well, I am glad that I am not the only one "blessed"! I am at 83,700 miles and going as strong as ever (still original rear rotors, btw! )

Control arm bushings--check. Tusen tack, Mr. K. Yep; lots of Chicago miles.

My grandparents were born in Sweden. My father lectured in "beautiful archaic Swedish" at the U of Stockholm; he was a design consultant to Volvo; his firm designed the 1970s Volvo NA dealership signage--the lighted hockey sticks, and he *almost* got Volvo to drop the grille sash. I asked him for a translation for "Sunday driver" and got sondagsakare.

Hope you enjoyed 94k this morning!

Varsagod The "sunday driver" gave it away!
Have you been to Torslanda? You should go! I know a great way to get the airfare FREE and I bet I could arrange a little VIP treatment for you...seeing as you have some impressive genetic links to Volvo!

Hope you enjoyed 94k this morning!

Indeed I did! Think I'll celebrate with a cold tonight! BTW...I'm impressed! You remembered

  14. 11-16-2006 03:55 PM #14
I've not been to Torslanda! I could combine OSD with a visit to ancestral Malmback (Jonkoping) in the South, near where my family operated a saw mill and where some of us still live, apparently. Good peasant stock, so my grandfather was quite proud when his son presented a design award to the king.

When the time comes to return to my roots, I will have your kind offer firmly in memory. But you see, I expect to enjoy my '01 for another 100k!

    Up Sweden! Skol!

Greetings from Finland: About 80k mi with my -01 V70 AWD. Just had the ETM cleaned first time and got a software update. Brake pads replaced once, second water pump, suspension has 2nd-3rd rods and that's about it in addition to regular service and occasional additional oil change. BSR works nicely!
Just test drove a 3,2 l 4Motion Passat, nice car, specially the DSG gear box but after I got my car back I have to say mine is very nice too!

  16. 11-17-2006 08:20 PM #16
If you (anyone) goes to Sweden to pick up their car don't forget to try a sneak visit to the Skövde engine plant. It might be more difficult to get an entry but let me know and I could do some calling to see about visiting pass. I still have several buddies working in the plant...

Skövde is about 1.5 hr from Gothenburg and although not a beauty there are many nice areas surrounding it!

    happy driving!

    103k on my 2001 V70 T5 Geartronic.

Runs better than ever with the latest TCM software downloaded 20k miles ago (Now very drivable with sufficient power in auto mode) New ETM + ETM software keeps the car running perfectly.

Slight gear 2-3 shift flare only in manual shift mode starting about 30k miles ago. Not getting worse. Unnoticeable in auto mode as the torque converter spins up slowly to the next gear.

Just purchased my 03' V70 T5 MT. Rolled 53K yesterday. It's nice to hear of this so I know what I'm in for. I took some tight corners today in Olympia WA and it held tighter than my 04' Acura TL. I love the feel of the turbo being ready to jump when I call on it. I'm absolutely in love with my V70. I do have a small ticking in the engine, any ideas? Being a new owner I'm not familiar with what this might be. It's most noticeable at idle.

Depends on the type of ticking. Most likely, it comes from th injectors; they are known to "tick" under the Volvv hoods, esp. on cars equipped with the 5-cyl. engines.

If it gets any louder, go in for service. Bt I doubt it has to do with the lifters.

Thanks for the advice. I have 54K on it now, I just bought it last week. I don't have any service history on the car, what service should I have it in for next to get and keep myself on regular intervals? I need to take care of the ticking as well.

  21. 11-18-2006 07:53 AM #21
Since you bought it without knowing history,
Oil change, transmission flush, visual inspection of belts, visual inspection of spark plug (condition and gap), check for broken wires, replace broken vacuum hose elbows, flush radiator fluid, check both air filter and cabin filter and replace as needed. Check for any trouble codes and clear them. Also check condition of brakes....replace brake fluid. Last of all, check condition of the upper engine torque bushing (these often break by this mileage) and replace if needed. Guess that's about all I can think of.

Also, thanks for the advice MadeInJapan. I'm puting in the shop real soon.

Most people mean a manual when they say "5-speed", but the automatics are 5 speeds also. Is your high mileage-badged V70 T5 a manual?

    Congratulations

    Brandi,
is the ticking more noticeable when you are standing still and have the gears in neutral/ clutch is engaged?
If you notice the ticking go away as you step on the clutch (disengages it) it could be the throwout bearing going bad in your clutch.

This suggestion was given to me on another post , and I had a clutch specialist look at it too = my car has a date for a clutch overhaul soon (about 1000 bucks ) to avoid an even more costly repair later...

The clutch engages very high. I'm planning on puting some type of sport clutch in it soon. What you described is exactly what I'm experiencing. Any thoughts on a nice clutch to replace it with? I'll more than likely be doing the work myself.

I am not experienced enough to say if there is a clutch kit preferrable over others - Sachs and Valeo are names I have seen - maybe some o fthe seasoned Swedespeed guys can give tips?

I was thinking of getting a Sachs kit myself (about $400), and give to the guy doing the work.

Your V70 XC appears to be the high mileage champ for a P2 with Geartronic. Your experience is an inspiration to all of us who feel we have a ticking time bomb in our trannies!

100,800 miles before my wife left for her meeting tonight.

Replaced the front coil spring bushings ($75 in parts, 2 hours of my own labor, and an $80 alignment afterward). Need to work on the rear suspension, and the tranny is starting shift kinda hard. The wife notices it more than I do.

Bought the car with 86K on it already. Not sure what other history it has.

What usually goes out on this tranny, and how much does it usually cost to fix it? Gonna do a flush this weekend.

It doesn't matter what usually goes out on the tranny. When whatever does go out in/on it, there is no rebuild...you have to replace it.

You will find some fairly recent posts on replacing the rear struts that are pretty helpful, if that is what you need. As for the tranny, flush and fill as soon as you can. In addition, you should definitely check with a dealership to make sure that you have the latest software update. Finally, check the drive train mounts, especially the upper & lower torque arm bushings. They break often, and when they do, any harshness in the shifting is greatly magnified. Easy fix too.

This concerned me at first also, but the dealer said it's normal. Can only tell with the hood up.

We're about to hit 58k on our 01 V70 T5. Other than a new tranny (at 26k) and about 20 other things it's been problem free Currently the driver seat controls don't work, and the radio controls on the steering wheel don't work. As it cost $500 to replace each, and it's probably just a 10 cent wire that's shorted out, I can't bring myself to pay to replace them. Me and my wife are the same height so we use the same settings anyway
The car still drives great though.

Does the seat work using the memory function?

Don't get me wrong, I love my V70 (only had it 3 weeks now) but all of these issues that have been posted makes me want to run screaming back to my Honda Accord. I didn't have any major problems with my 2 Accords until over 150K and at that the repairs were under $500.

I know Volvo is more comparable to my Acura TL than my Accords but being a higher end car I would also expect more out of it. So much time and money went into designing these. Should I expect breakdowns and high maintenance with my V70 T5 MT?
