Hissing sound when brake pedal is release?

OK, I donít know what it is but every time I release the brake pedal, thereís this hissing sound like leaking air coming from the below the dash near the brake pedal. It actually started a few months ago and comes and goes and was very minor but now itís louder and happens every time the brake pedal is released. The hissing sounds continues even after my foot is completely off the brake and Iím on the gas pedal. It hisses for a while and when I step on the brakes again it stops but then starts up once I start releasing the brakes again.

Anyone know wtf is going on?

Brake Booster vacuum line. Usually on the firewall.

only 1 response? sounds like trouble and appears to be a major issue.

if it is in the break booster though the whole thing needs to go - depends on where the leak is.

Would really be unusual to have a booster leak in the cannister. Real unusual unless there was outside damage done to it. Sounds like it's not a line or hose however.

This is a case where you take it to an INDY and have them do it for half the cost. Not a difficult job. Can't imagine it taking more than 2 hours to complete it max. Auxilary stuff to be sure still needs to be done.

I will take it to my indep tech to get a second opinion, plus yes he can probably do it for half price

Just to let you know, I had the same exact problem on my S60 T5. I took it to 3 places, and they all told me that it was the brake booster. I paid $800ish for mine. Unfortunately, the S60 brake boosters cannot be rebuilt so you have to buy an entire new one. I am glad I got my problem fixed because it started to get annoying. I am sorry to tell you this, but be prepared to pay a lot of money to get this fixed. It is the part itself that is really expensive.

Sure it's expensive when the dealer will put down $385 or more for the part. Can't take over 2 hours labor max at an Indy. Depends where you get your work done.

taking it to the indep shop tomorrow to have it checked out. Rusnak said the part itself was close to $400 so if you factor in 3-4 hours labor @ $75/hr it will fall between $600 - $700.

      you won't have "brake booster"

meaning you will have the braking capability of old school cars.

so its still getting enough vacuum to boost. the smaller the leak, the louder the hiss.

Ha, until it rips a big one and rolex's foot goes through the floor board trying to manually brake the 3500 # roller coaster.

To identify it all you had to do is run the car, open the hood and have someone depress the brake pedal while you identified where it was at.

Re: Hissing sound when brake pedal is release? (blackTT55)

I broke a booster once after a brake job. The pistons were pushed in, and of course I forgot that and floored the pedal. The diaphragm inside tore apart... No brakes at all after that. I bought a salvaged booster and had it installed under 1/3 of dealer quote. Hissing should be just a vacuum leak though, as everyone is saying.

Well, finally got the brake booster unit replaced today at my indep volvo shop. Costed me $575....

Re: Hissing sound when brake pedal is release? (Rolex)

yes indeed that infamous brake booster. Lost mine at about 60k fortunately my extended warranty covered every bit of it.

    28. #28

Re: Hissing sound when brake pedal is release? (blackTT55)

Mine is similar but perhaps not as advanced. The whistle is next to the brake pedal away from the firewall. Whistle happens intermittently but only after the pedal is released after braking. Is there a vacuum switch or check valve on the brake pedal that could be doing this?

Re: Hissing sound when brake pedal is release?

What part do you need if you have DTSC? I didn't see a part on the website recommended earlier- is this part OEM only? Any help you could provide would be highly appreciated.

replace the brake booster, there's a leak at the back of the seal into the passenger area

Re: Hissing sound when brake pedal is release? (rektek)

Though this thread is really old, for the record:

I also had my brake booster replaced under extended warranty ~70,000 mi. Hissing noise when foot was off the brake, didn't seem like there was an effect on braking ability, just an annoying whistling/hissing noise. After the booster was replaced, the braking felt much better, and w/o any noise...

How difficult is it to replace brake booster DIY? special tools?

Re: Hissing sound when brake pedal is release? (sviolette)

Replaced this weekend and fixed hissing sound. Remanufactured brake booster from Advanced Auto (Cardone) $180. Took 4 hours total. This website was priceless for step by step instructions. http://www.freewebs.com/howard...s.htm

Took me a little while to figure out how to adjust brake pedal switch.
Also, I had a small leak on brake line after done. Fixed it and now everything is great.

Re: Hissing sound when brake pedal is release? (fredmc)

I called Europarts direct and they don't have the brake booster for an S60 with traction control. Any idea where I can find one for a car with traction control with paying the dealer?

Re: Hissing sound when brake pedal is release? (KAH)

      without paying the dealer....oops.
