so, dealer checked it out, and called VCNA. VCNA told them to send the engine to sweden and they will check it out. The dealer said 3-4 weeks to get a new engine.

What could possibly have gone wrong??

    Cracked piston?

I'd gather the dealer will provide a better answer than merely a blind guess from any one of us....................

Wow - It really could have been just about anything related to the internals but it must have been fairly significant for it to necessitate a new motor. Typically the moving components (pistons, valves, cam etc) are easily replaced but a damaged head or block could surely be cause for a replacement.

Did they give you an estimate of downtime? Are they taking care of your loaner?

Keep us posted on the progress & good luck

Despite popular opinion (and what is implied on this website) the Volvo 4.4L V8 is not simply a larger version of the older SHO V8 engine.

Great Volvo is stepping up and doing the right thing even at 40k mi.

Audi isn't so forthcoming on the S4 V8's, they know which 1200 engine could fail and do nothing hoping the engine holds together until out of warranty then the owner is responsible for the new $25k engine.

The Engines had weak valve springs which would fail causing a valve to drop into the cylinder(was mostly the #8 also toward the back)this caused head damage or total engine failure (sounded like an old smith-corona typewriter)

Audi's first response was to blame the owner then try and replace only the head, ignoring the cylinderwall damage caused by the valve, then the whole short block, crazy but true. Service deptments were explicitly prohibited from opening a bad motor which was shipped back to HQ in Germany. Same went for bad gearboxes(mine blew at 18k miles) service dept was never informed of the cause or preemptive work to be done, they were completely left in the dark by Audi and told a new bax was on the way

3-4 weeks sounds great a friend got his V8 in the S4 in less than 10 days even though none were susposed to exist in the US( the new second one lasted until 44k mi), others waited up to 5mo

You might qualify for a lemon law and get new Xc90...

  14. 06-19-2007 05:36 PM #14

engine problem is being fixed, doubt it will be a lemon law after 40k and first issue.

Great that you will get a fresh engine at 40k, break it in right. Would be even better if it was
replaced under warrenty at 100k .

Wanted to let people know of the final outcome. On Tuesday, June 26th I picked up our XC90 with a brand new engine. The Dealer, Volvo of Westport, did a great job of making this a hassle free issue. They have shipped the engine back to Volvo and it is anyones guess what went wrong, the important piece is that Volvo stood behind their product, thank you. I now have a 2005 XC90 with 37,000 miles and a new engine makes me wonder what I will do when the lease is up in 2 years.

Actually, the engine would go to Japan.
It is EXTREMELY rare for a V8 engine to fail.

Congrats - I am glad to hear it all worked out. Make sure you drive nicely for a few hundred miles and be sure to vary the RPMs and such - you have a new motor & "proper" break-in is important.

Return it to your dealer & get a new one. Although the motor is new, all other components are not... (isnt that why you lease?)

Which is probably why they wanted to have the whole engine, so they can study what happened. Often manufacturers will replace the entire engine for even a relatively minor problem if they need the entire old engine to sort out what went wrong. And with labor costs being what they are, it doesn't even cost the manufacturer much more this way. (Huge mark-ups in replacement parts, vs. having to pay the dealer tech.)
