S60 R Atspeeds? what happened to them? | 2:59 AM 1-4-2008 | |
|
hiIm interested in finding out the fate of the S60R GT cars built by Atspeeds. I'm aware volvo withdrew sponsorship after 2 years and I think atspeeds raced for a third season?? I cant find a website for a race team called 3R racing (brake company of same name and lots of computer game references!) I've heard the following "Atspeed loss their sponsorship from volvo america. After that a private sponsor was then done. He was not satisfied with the results so he took the cars away and moved them to 3R racing, to have them re developed" does anyone know where these cars are now and who is racing them? I understand the swedespeed staff had good contacts at Atspeeds so hopefully we can find out where they went! thanks

At Speed I believe had built three cars. If you look in the galleries section you will see several in livery colours. The one in the preview section was a promo car used for PR demo drives and hot laps etc. It now resides in Quebec at Franke Motorsports, driver Bernard Franke, has won two regional championships 06' and 07'. This car was a former STCC S60 Challenge car. At Speeds was using it for learning, as the story goes there were two cars from Sweden that were put into to the program only one came out. They were the factory cars that VCC kept for development and promotional purposes and had no further use for them. You may have seen the poster, Bernard was also the driver of the Championship Rally winning 240 Turbo from the eighties. In the promo posters the car is sideways on a dirt track going like a bat out of hell. The car was white with black and red body stripes. The other car you see in the same section of the galleries in the Sebring folder, I understand, is also located in Quebec now and was aquired from at Speeds and racing in the same series but I think in a different class, the team is chagautosport http://videos.streetfire.net/v...1.htm Atspeeds might still have three cars that they have moth balled, or have prepped in case somone shows up with a big chequebook Cheers Update01/09/08 I have come to learn that the second S60 Challenge car is in fact the other car in Quebec, What was confusing was the change of the front end nose peice from the larger opening to the more stock R version. So both cars are still alive but one is a bit more developed than the other in terms of body work. The Franke Racing added a dogbox for 07'. Anyhow the cars in action at St Pie De Bagot Sanair raceway.

We are the owners of the second car, which you see in white livery in the picture behind Franke's. Both of these cars were used as display cars by VCNA and ATspeed during the time they were campaigning the cars for Volvo, but they are both front wheel drive ex- S60 Challenge cars originally built for the one make series in Sweden. Additionally we have picked up a shell which was prepared by Atspeed for the Speed Challenge, but is completely devoid of mechanicals. We are not sure if this car ever raced, but it does have some signs of usage and it has the first version of the bodywork which they showed at the end of 2004. At the time we purchased the shell, there was another shell with more mechanicals also for sale, but we believe that has been sold.

Recent article in VCOA magazine says the S60 Racing cars are now owned by member & supporter of the VCOA GGC, Jim Haughey and has formed K-PAX Racing. I would suspect they picked up everything lock stock and barrel. The list of 'stuff' that was developed by AtSpeed $$$ is increadible, the engines had $100K in just development costs from Cosworth. The website at K-PAX does not show show anything of the S60's....I guess time will tell.

I would love to get intouch with you and talk about what you have done with yours. Im shooting for a comlete car in a year and a half or more. I will be posting more pics and stuff for sure.

Very nice video, looks like you started at the back of the field but worked your way up.
