Ok I really have a thing for the S40. Its got everything I want all in one package so long as that package has all wheel drive, a six speed manual and 220 bhp.
As good as all that sounds… Why only 220 bhp and why light pressure turbo?
I am thrilled as a current Focus owner, that the S40 is being built on the new C1 platform.
My Focus is heavily modified S2 varriant of the ZX3 focus sold here in the States. Once upon a time it had a European suspension on it. That is until I dropped 2 inches.
So I’m done messing with cars to that extent and the S40 is the car I will most likely purchase I can envision doing some tweaking so long as it doesn’t result in making the car run louder (God, you should here my Focus).
So what do you think you can get out of the S40 with an aftermarket exhaust and some chip work?
Can the boost be tweaked, and if so. by how much? I wonder what it would take to get it to say 250 – 300 bhp.
You see I want a Volvo, but I would also like to know that just because I’m driving a Volvo, it doesn’t mean I won’t smoke your WRX Sti getting on to the highway onramp.

Yeah Shomare - I know the feeling (though I have actually been there - in my Audi - having burned both an STi and an EVo recently - and yes very satisfying - and both were really gunning for me....but we're talking an S4 with many mods)..I'm not sure that an S40 is really going to be such a dragster...though I'm expecting spirited performance. And I imagine if you have the patience they will come out with an R model or such...but unlikely before they upgrade the 60R some - that would be my guess...

I have done the mod everything thing with my Focus and have no intention of going that route ever again.
Most likely I would look into springs, aftermarket exhaust and chip mods and that’s it.
I like the available stock rims so much I wouldn’t even bother with another set except maybe some for winter / snow use.
I think I would be content with 250 bhp. I no longer need to have (nor would I delude myself into thinking) the fastest car on the block.
I just looking for a competent handling, spirited performing family sedan, but I’m not opposed to moding / tweaking it to my taste and to set it apart from the rest of the fleet.
I was just thinking that the T5 seemed a bit detuned and as such was capable of much more.
I’m not looking at getting one for at least a year as I want the all wheel drive and six speed option. If there is to be a R Type S40, I would certainly be willing to hold out for that.
Can a stock S4 smoke an STi?....I thought the Sti took everything except when you get up there with Porche's and such....
The STi is 300hp, but loses a bit at the dragstrip because it's a 6-speed. The EVO can better it with less hp as there's one less shift.
I've only driven the FWD 6spd T5, but the torque is much better than the regular WRX. If you want a general idea on what can be done to this motor, consider looking at http://www.ipdusa.com and look at the 2.5T on S60/V70 etc. Expect a chip available, high flow cat and exhaust . I wouldn't be surprised to see staged upgrades on these cars though where more is available.

Joe - I doubt that a stock S4 (also a 6 speed BTW) could take an STi...but my S4 is not at all stock (and i'm also not your average driver - that is correct). And yes - I did juke him a bit at the line - he started behind me and pulled up on my bumper and started reving his engine rather annoyingly..so I felt obligated really. I kicked out at the light...then let completely off the gas - just for a sec - mesed him up I'm sure - then I piled it on! Stomp!! He tried to go around me but never was closer then a car length - perhaps never that close - and I clearly pulled on him where by the 1/4 I was easily 4-5 car lengths (and growing...). He declined to go at me at the next light!...LOL...the EVo was a rolling start..he came up on me as I was accelerating from behind some slow cars...again I pulled on him through several (high speed) attempts (where my goal was just to stay comfortably ahead of him - regardless of speed)...but I'm pulling about 360+ lb/ft of torque - significantly more then either of these guys. Likewise I haven't played with an M3 or an M5 (including latest models) that I haven't been able to pull on (even if just a bit) when I stomp on it...but they can be wickedly fast! (never had a go yet with a 60R..though one did pull up along side me just today [and was checking me out...the monster exhaust tends to be a bit of a give away...though many have no clue really...) ..had the family in the car though...)
I feel that the S40 - with nice torque (and that and the AWD and the promiss of decent handling and typical volvo comfort & safty etc [and perhaps atypical styling...] are what drew me to the car...). I think folks tend to look at horsepower numbers and not realize that these are peak figures (sometime achieved only at wind out...) that don't always directly translate into (real world) performance. Even my 2 Supercharged autos - the Millenia with 210 and the MR2 with 145 (approx) Hp & torgue respectively each reach torque platues very quickly (love them superchargers!) and each have full bandwith power - and move out with authority - form a stand still to anywhwere on the power curve...and in abotu any gear..)... (so yeah I'm addicted already...LOL). I do see chipping and modding my S40 at some point (basic stuff...nothing rad) ...but not to be a dragster - to just boost it a bit and take advantage of the performance that is likely there with the engine & Turbo...can't wait! And I do want it with the suspension upgrades and 18" wheels...most definatly...I run 19" on the Audi in the summer and 17" with Verdestein performance snows in the winter (now)..and can't wait to go out and play in this snow tonigth or tommorw (were supposed to get 7-8" overnight! joy! lol)

Roadhawk- thanks for the info. I too look for s40 mods, but it will be a good 6 months i'm sure...right in time for when I get the AWD version!
I saw someone said it has better pull than the WRX...that would be nice because my biggest complaint with that care was that lag on acceleration.

No problem Joe. Actually the WRX drives pretty nice - particualry for the money...yeah it does have some lag (off the line)..but with the stick its possible to drive it well up into the boost range and hardly notice it at all..its really a nice little car all around IMO - hadles nice too.
Oh & BTW - with my Audi S4 (6 cillinder Bi-Turbo)...chipped - etc...I've also thoroughly dominated the new V8 S4 out on the highway...easily pulling on him at will (so I give up 10-20hp...and doubt I was much lighter - me in a wagon and he in a sedan)...again torque baby!

I said that it has better low end torque than the WRX. I've driven both cars, though the S40 was a fwd and not an awd.
