I'm going to the San Francisco Drive Event on the 29th. Based on the Irvine event, what can I expect...cars, course speeds, displays, etc? Thanks - James.

Professionally catered with small hors d'oeuvres. Small sandwiches (ham, tuna fish), some vegeterian hummus w/ pita bread. Sounds awesome! This will be my first Volvo event and I'm really excited to go...just don't want to freak out anyone by deliberately sliding the car around.
Praying for rain so I can hog some seat time. he.he.

Too bad I missed it. I had reserved the 9:00am spot Sunday but when I woke up at 8:00 it was pouring rain like mofo. I said forget it! Went back to sleep and next thing you know, when I woke up, the birds were chirping and the sun was freaking beaming!!!

Hey titsataki...I'll look for your WRX. If you happen to see a tall white guy driving a black '04 Forester Turbo, that'll be me. See ya there!

Dooh... I never looked at this post ...
I know I saw your Forester and we left about the same time but I did not had a chance to see you in the event? It was another WRX there as well.
I parked next to a nice S60R (Ti grey/dark interior). On the way in we both got on the cars hard and it was lots of fun.
Well Obvioully I am comparing to my 02 WRX with a fair amount of suspension stuff done (no coilovers tho) and a fair amount of power mods. (ECU flash, Samco hoses downpipe, hi flow cat and custom tuning, short shifter, 17 inch rims. Plus I am in a Volvo forums
Drove the T5 6sp both courses and T5 auto safety course. Clutch is so much lighter. Lets go a lower level though. The tranny. I only went a couple gears and I notice a that it just has lots of free play and lots of movement. A short shifter would do wonders here. At full force acceleration there is a decent amount of torque steer felt on the steering. Also a decent amount of wheel hope and spin. Cabin insulation is very nice and amenities are nice. Power is decent. you guys think that a S40R will show up? I am thinking that it would not for a while at least.
Al in all a had a good time and learned alot about the car. Looking forward to see how an AWD version will perform.
Cheers
Nick

Nick, sorry I missed you on the way out and thus couldn't give you a ride in the S60R, but it sure was a blast "flying" through the road leading to the event hitting triple digit speeds. (No cops to stop us!) At least that probably gave you a taste of R power I highly doubt Volvo would stick in a S40R anytime soon since it would detract from the S60R sales with performance probably very similar to the current S60R. As it is the current S40 T5 0-60 is 6.3 sec compared to S60's 5.4 sec. But I am sure with some aftermarket tweaking, one could get stock S60R -like performance..

I was looking for you but I went and testdrove the Auto version so after that you were already out of there.
I as well enjoyed our quick run at high rate of speed. Up to now the S60R is on the top of my list for repacement of my WRX.
I am sure there will be get togethers in the Bay area and I can swing by the get a ride on someone's S60R. By the way thanks for offering I appreciated it very much.
Cheers
Nick

Man, talking about a blast! Went to the Saturday night-drive event in SF. Good turnout and perfect weather overlooking a killer view of city-lights. Cool. But twas nothing compared to the cars. Took my fiancé and we drove the S40 T5 6-spd, and auto. Took each course several times in each car. No question that this is unlike any other Volvo I’ve driven. I’m tickled with the car and will be ordering my AWD T5 6-spd in a few months. (OSD for sure!) Suffice to say, Volvo really put on a good show. The safety deal with the door-beams was funny to watch but not a fair comparison. Also, it was nice for them to bring in a few other cars to show where the market is “common.” I feel that we should have been allowed to drive the Audi, BMW, and Acura in addition to the S40. Would have added a little more sense of what you’re buying.
In all, the whole trip was killer fun. Felt like a king and had fun speaking with the corporate Volvo guys. Quite open and friendly was the general feel of our conversations. The most noteworthy, all of the Volvo people told me that an S40 R was in the works and that I can put money on getting one. Just it will be into the 06 year. (None would give their names or put it in writing though.)
Speaking with the Michelin reps, I have figured that the 18” Pirelli’s are going to be replaced with the new Michelin Pilot II when it is released. Rep said that the new Pilot II kills the PP S03. Then I asked about the wet traction…he politely retracted his statement.
Well, we walked away with full stomachs, good education about the cars, met cool people, drove to our heart’s content, and then listened to a free CD with Cdtext that actually worked! Man, what a night! Kudos to Volvo for the good show and allowing us to drive the cars in this layout.
Cheers!
Prospero
I told them I'm quite disappointed that there was no word yet on an S40R. The Volvo people then told me to wait about a year or two. Now, I know this might perhaps just be a lie, but it does get my hopes up a bit.
