Right now I'm using 10W-30 Mobil 1 Tri-synthetic oil. But word has been going on around the net that Mobil 1 is no longer going full synthetic since they lost that lawsuit against Pennzoil or Castrol or something. So it's half'n'half. For the next oil change, I'm probably switching to Amsoil.
First I read that the new SL rated Mobil 1 was using petroleum basestock, and then I read that they actually weren't using it. So, I'm not sure at this point. The tests I've seen show an increase in volitility and a decrease in flash point, neither of which is a good sign.
There's no way the new Mobil 1 is better, but it's a matter of how much worse it is, and is it better than the synthetic blends from other companies.
There should still be a long thread going at the 1.8T forum at VWvortex (under tech. forums) about the new Mobil 1. I'll add the link later.
I would use Amsoil, if I did use synthetic.
