Those brighter bulbs aren't going to be that much brighter, but probably worth the effort if it makes you feel better. Almost like my case w/ the new wheels.

The HID wannabe bulbs could be bad when they take away all the yellow to create that white look, usually don't shine as well as the stock ones. I used to have set, actually still have them for my high beams instead now, that gives this whiter look but still a lot brighter than stock. Not too r_ice-ish, but gives a bit too much glare for the incoming traffic. They were by Carmate, call Gigalux.

Some say those Phillips 35% brighter ones were good, but didn't make much difference if any when I tried them on my 240.

hrmm.. so you saying that avoid those "almost as bright as HID" light bulbs.

i was looking at the bulbs that iPd sells by PIAA or Luks... think they are worth it???

oh and also, halogen reverse bulbs... any use?? http://********************/smile/emsmilep.gif

I bought a cheapy Xenon bulb set off ebay, the made in Korea ones! I'm actually pretty happy with them considering I expected them to suck, I think there brighter with nice colour (finally, last cheapo didn't do anything). I paid $20 US + S&H for high & low beams. Good deal. Just get the right power rating, mine were 55W & 65W for the 9005 & 9006. I saw some super bright ones that were closer to 100W for the same cheap price, I imagine they would fry your electrical. Just beware if you go cheap, probably PIAA would be good if you have the dough to experiment with.

This is a big pet peve of mine:

Just remember guys, unless you get a real HID System, any bulbs you buy that have a "BLUE" coating on them will reduce REAL light output. I don't care what any bulb manufacturer says, they are telling flat out lies if they say their particular bulb is putting out more light. These rules of Physics and Optics can not just be re-written in a single day.

BUT, if you are buying them for the "LOOK" then you will be fine. Those good quality blue bulbs actually do what they say, because they in fact can change the color temperature of the light output, which gives them a nicer look on the road and to the eyes.

Check out this website below for more info:

Good artical! I guess mine fall under the gas filled that could be brighter but have a blue coating. They seem a bit brighter but it was the color I was after and do mostly city driving under street lamps. I heard HID kits were a thousand dollars and said forget that. I want something for nothing! http://********************/smile/emwink.gif
Mine don't seem to be the worst dim with a shiny coating ones they talk about but I'm sure they're nothing special, nor was I expecting much from them when I bought them.

HID kits go fro $400 now. I got mine for that much shipped. If you want I can let you know who to go to... I wouldn't recommend going to a higher wattage bulb unless you have some sort of upgraded wiring harness. In the long run, those high wattage lamps will do more harm than good.

GShyneDM - where about LA are you? I work in El Segundo and am going to put my HIDs on soon (still having that light flickering problem, hope to find a solution soon). When it's installed and when I have time (work is killing me right now), we can meet up and you can check it out.

$400? That is getting better, but still not worth for me for this car. I'd rather put that $400 towards suspension or 18" rims http://********************/smile/emsmile.gif
That's why I bought $30 lights http://********************/smile/emsmilep.gif lol! Thanks for the info though, someday, they are really nice. Maybe my next Volvo will come with them factory(!).

Re: new Headlamps... NOT HID question... (GShyneDM)

Sure, whenever both of us are busy. I actually live in the valley so Burbank is closer. Right now, I'm trying to figure out my headlight flickering before I put them back on. Don't want to piss people off. I might try putting the ballasts somewhere else. I don't feel comfortable as to where they are located now. Plus I'm customizing a wiring harness so that takes time too. Eventually, all will get done.
