Hey guys
Just found this forum not long ago.
Got a XC90 and already took it to Frasier Island for some fun in the sand. Will load up a short video clip that was taken there soon. Actually, I saw that and I pretty much reckon it would nearly have to be. Yours is the same color (white) with all the options, hopefully they will mix the order. I have just put the subie in to fix the front offside dent from where an echo ran into me and the rear where a holden ute ran into me and I havent had the time to get it done under insurance. am now though as it will cost me money on the trade otherwise.
really looking forward to the diesel. am absolutely fed up with filling the tank every four hours of driving. i will go from a 450 km range to in excess of 900 kms range!!!
mate of mine flew over the other day to watch the waratahs v Western force game (best team won). I saw the game on tv and it looked a corker. they go over every year as its played in the big stadium and few (this year 22k) go so easy good seats.
i do a lot of k's so still a bit fragile about how much the services will cost. after the subie in which the services are cheap it will be a bit of a wallet shock but i suppose its also twice the vehicle so will just have to go with the flow.
i cant remember did you get the subwoofer as well?? somewhere else in this forum there was a post which indicated the subwoofer on the standard sound system makes a real difference so actually i am still considering it.
can you let me know if they reckon delivery is delayed and i will do likewise for you - as no way would there be two boats about the same time. how did you get the boat names and deliveries, good stuff. thanks for the heads up.
i was tossing up getting the liberty wagon gt spec b - same price you know, but the volvo's got more interior space and the seats are bigger and that swung it for me.

cheers
Hatdriver

Hi Hatdriver,
I will be a tad dark if our cars get swapped but if you take delivery and have my VIN, I will be getting concerned !!!
All the info came straight from that website - just enter your VIN (I asked my dealer and he emailed it in so you must also be able to get it...) and all will be revealed !
Yes, I am a 40k/year driver and will be looking forward to getting more than 500kms out of a tank as well (twice a week fillups gets annoying). I am driving a "Home Grown" XC70 at the moment (a Holden Adventra LX6) but my service costs will actually be going down as I qualify for a Corporate deal with free servicing for 3yr/100k (!). The Adventra is very "Client Friendly" compared to the X5 I had before and I expect middle ground with the XC70 (I expect I will be seen as a bit eccentric now).
I had considered a Subaru but I hate the idea of metallic/pearl white paint and they just seem a bit small inside (I am 6' 2"). Their new diesel does sound good though.
Can't talk about rugby - in the AFL, Sydneys Barry Hall is big news here !
No subwoofer ordered. Couldn't see the value and figured if I really wanted one, I could do better aftermarket. Wouldn't involve ripping the car apart too much (unlike upgrading the rest of the stereo). As you know, I already added too many options anyway...
I wish I understood option pricing. In the UK (you can download the pricelist from their site), the Dynaudio upgrade is 1000 pounds and the subwoofer is 180. Over here, Dynaudio is $930 and the subwoofer $1280. In the UK, you pay 250 pounds extra for solid black (575 for metallic) but here it is the same price as white. Then we get laminated glass for $490 but in the UK it is 450 pounds.
Did you know our cars will have a graphic on the centre display for the parking sensors ? - nice to get a free upgrade on something !!!
You won't be far way from driving the IKEAmobile !
the prices of cars and accessories in different places in the world also astound me. for my mind i like usually scrutinize the canadian sites given the closeness in value of cars. it is surprising though and i figure the prices that are set are only partly tiered to its cost plus profit ratio. rather its a case of the item cost this much how much do you reckon we can get away with charging in our market hence the widely fluctuating prices of cars and options/accs. from my point i am fairly happy with the pricepoint of this car in comparison to its competitor the liberty. i never cease to be surprised when i read that xc70 competitor in England is the all road. i mean over here that car is nearly double the price of the xc70. the passat wagon i can understand and i looked at that too but the awd only comes in petrol and it will only take that premium petrol so useless in the bush as they dont have it on the bowsers.
re the diesel Subie i've read somewhere that its diesel engines are like their petrol counterparts - not very fuel efficient. wait and see on that one.
when i bought the car it was a fri 4pm, so i got in and went out asap. rethe parking sensors - what was there b4 this apparently new graphic display for the parking sensors - just an audio warning or something?? It is good though. I suppose some of the 2009 features might be leaking through to the last runs of 2008 cars.
i had a bmw once, they keep the rrp low by stripping the standard car bare and then charging like bulls on opt & accessories which you need to get the car decent. the new x5 has the same looks as the old x5 (i dont have a keen interest in that brand since they sold a beautiful new metallic blue with white leather interior & uncommon wood out from under me- after waiting 6 mths for it). i think this latest model will age quickly given the cars already been around for at least ten years. they should have gone the direction of MB and introduced a whole new look. also the run flat tyres and that dash control is weird (though i dont know if they have it on the new model or if its been toned down).
whats the 3 yr/100k deal - is that for fleet or thru a lease company or something. or is it something thats done thru volvo??
i was thinking of taking the lease over 4 years, 3yrs makes the payments a bit high and five years is too long a time. wonderful news yesterday that the reserve believes that the interest rates have peaked. Its real good to know that when the car is delivered in a few weeks i will sign a lease contract for years at the absolute peak of the interest cycle! another reason to take it over less than 5 years though.
i was actually looking at the laminated glass as it quietens the car down a fair bit however we have a high theft from vehicles rate over here and the replacement on one door according to the dealer was about $1000 and some poor chap had to get it as the glass is slightly a different shade to the ordinary glass.

cheers
Hatdriver

Yes, the XC70 vs Allroad comparison is a interesting one. If they were the same price I would probably pick the Audi - but they are way different here. Yes, the XC70 is good value over here IMHO. I would have been tempted by a Passat wagon too if they did a Diesel AWD, but with extra ground clearance. I don't like the Toureg at all...
Yes, parking sensors were audio only but we now apparently get a display graphic which is good (so you can see which side is activating etc.)
I have had a few BMW's in the past but I am not a fan of iDrive or those (Very expensive) runflat tyres at all... The electronic complexities of new BMW's is also a real worry. It can take a DAY just to reload software in some models !
The free service comes with some Volvo Corporate Plan that I apparently qualify for (depends on the size of your company and its turnover). You also get reduced dealer delivery cost. BMW and others have similar plans.
Yes, I am also concerned about locking into a high interest rate on finance. Long term, it looks like reducing so "perhaps" they may quote lower figures in the coming weeks (we hope...)
Well, only a couple of weeks and you should have yours - let us know how it goes !!!

Hi,
sorry for the late reply have been travelling for most the last week.
yes i received a call from the dealer i think on monday confirming the arrival of the car. no probs with the pics when i get it which should be towards the end of this week apparently. bit of a delay as we had euro
plates on hold at one registry which is some distance from the dealer. waiting for the plates to be sent to liverpool RTA.
what are you doing about tinting. i was thinking i might buy the blinds as I dont want the panels to be removed on the doors. on the other hand there is an awful lot of glass in the load bay meaning heck of a lot of blinds.
cheers
peter maxwell

I am waiting for a update but I guess I may take delivery by the end of next week.
I will be getting the dealer to tint all the windows. I don't like the idea of the door trims being pulled off either but I continue to tolerate it. I always get the windows done and feel really weird when I am in a car without tint ! Personally I can't stand stuck on blind things but people do say I am a bit weird. When my child was very young I had the X5 and optioned the built in door blinds (as well as the tint) which were good. Hi,
Every thing is approved and the car is ready to pick up but am in Launceston for a couple of days so should pick it up on friday this week. i spoke with the dealer and he reckons they dont have to pull the panels off which is odd as i had a crv about 7 years ago and put it in for the tint and i couldnt get out of the drivers door and was there when they pulled the panel off and reconnected something that they had detached on the interior of the door panel.
i actually did mean the blinds without the suction cups the used to be on the global site but I just looked and cant seem to find them.
the tint is priced at $550 so i will probably have it put on with the first service to avoid the luxury tax.
Our sons birthday is this w/e and have football all sat and half of sunday and i know i had problems putting photo's onto this site though will try to this w/e.
Cheers
Hatdriver

Finally got it. Must be something about spending $$$'s that tends to make one more observant of the item you have just bought but i must say it is finished really nicely. usually there is a gap between the side of the back seat and the side portion of the back door but on this there is a leather inset that brings it all together. the white looks just fantastic.
the delivery took a while. the bluetooth straight off and all the controls are pretty much intuitive (so much so that you would think that someone from apple/mac was a designer). Volume too low on the phone / bluetooth I turned up the dial using the volume knob and hey presto.
I am taking it easy but for an oil burner it is not loud with plenty of power bearing in mind it is not a sports car.
After the forestor the family cant believe the space, the quiet and the comfort.
I will get some photo's on the weekend posted as i have a busy week (have to pay for the lease).
there are no metal joins on the body where the doors fit it seems to have been pressed out of one piece of metal??
Misgivings: only thing i should have got is the front parktronic otherwise I am pretty happy with the unit as a whole except i am going to have to read the manual for sure and certain to learn exactly what this can do and what i have bought. i dont know if you got the se but if you did you actually also get front seat warmers (hardly need it in wa i know) which i also didnt know i was getting. also didnt realise the mirrors are hooked up to the memory seat function - fastastic.
i will be fitting the tint at first service together with a luggage mould thing as we have a dog. i am undecided at the moment whether to get the cage separator thing also.
My son is currently sitting in it parked in the garage watching James Bond. the rce is great and if anyone is reading this and thinking of ordering a xc70 and has a 10 y/o GET THE RCE they love it. i will be fitting a playstation 2 module with a power inverter over the next few weeks.
All in all i am pretty much blown away by it. For those thinking about getting one I got mine from Floris at Peter Warren, Warwick Farm, he knows the product inside and out and is very very helpful. this is the first new car (two BMW's and a Merc) in which something with the order has not been mucked up. Floris was like a breath of fresh air let me tell you.
Cheers
Hatdriver

I see there is no mention of vented seats so I don't think you have my car
I did get the front parking sensors ($295 for a factory order, the dealer quotes $1495 for retrofitting !) but no RSE. That does sound good but for some reason my 7yr old daughter doesn't like to watch movies in the car - we have a portable unit but the novelty has worn off. Kids can be so different in their ways... She is looking forward to seeing out the windows better while on the builtin booster seat !
I hope the Bluetooth will be OK with a iPhone - I intend to get one (if it does work) even though the Blackberry Curve I have now is quite compatible according to the Volvo listing.
We'll be comparing pics shortly - mine is at the dealers apparently but it will be another week before I see it I think...

Your car is a twin of mine (minus about fifty accessory options) but most obviously the crossed aluminium trim and the sunroof. The photo's are great. With your photo's just saw a a picture, for the first time, of the dark fineline and I must say that looks good. Oh well another blue. Very much envious of your options - seems like you have put a great package together. I still havent read the book, hence havent tried the options i did get - its been raining over her and the rainsensors havent come on automatically and i am unsure if the interior air quality is even working either - been busy lately, attempting to avoid clients ripping out my pancreas (or worse) so havent even given the car its first wash. I have had a apple time capsule (still wrapped) sitting in my office for three weeks. will wash, shammy and photographs though.

Something i would like to know though, do you think the laminated glass is noticeable and if so by about how many notches on the radio?? I was seriously thinking about that one too (oh well).
though we are somewhat biased i reckon the white's is the best colour in the range (seashell is my second choice and glad i didnt get the grey as my wife saw one in the showroom and didnt get it).
Something i think i noticed though having done about 2200 kms and up to my third tank of diesel is that i really think its loosening up a bit or something and i am getting more mileage to the tank.
Pros - After driving the 2.5 subie the get up and go this thing has got is welcome.
Cons - cant get the car off the wife.
In short still discovering the car, your photo's informed me the rear centre headrest lifts.
Cheers
Hatdriver.

Hi NTS,
I am nudging 3000kms with a 9.7 l/100 average. the majority of driving is in sydney with four longish trips, one to the hunter valley, two to gosford and back and one to Katoomba. i suppose a pretty good mix of freeway and city driving (when i say city i mean stop-start and heavy traffic for most the time). I am spending about the same money on fuel as when i had my 2.5 lt subie. In short, given the 1.8 tonne around me I am very very happy with the fuel economy on this size & weight vehicle. However from reading the us site i figure that petrol owners do not have the same satisfaction. I cant understand the us reluctance to go down the diesel road. Costs of retraining a continent of mechanics is one i suppose and the other cheap petrol.
Today is the day, i will wash, vacuum, polish the xc and take some pictures (in between football games this morning and this afternoon).
the tip with the wipers was handy as it rained all this week.
to think its one of the best value cars on the market - all round.
Cheers
hatdriver

Yes, loving mine now too. Did 700kms today (easily !) and I am sure I could it feel it having loosened up a bit now as it does get up and go when you go out to overtake. I have just passed 2000kms and the average shows 8.6l/100kms but I think I do less commuting than you !
As it rained and drizzled most of the day, I am appreciating the autowipers a LOT !
My car is filthy - may take some more pics like it is ! - You do appreciate that you don't get dirty hands with the electric tailgate
From some other posts, I see we have 15k service intervals but in Europe it is 30k ! - strange eh ?
I guess those chasing status would disagree, but I am quite pleased I got the XC and not a new X5.
Pics soon HD ?

Hi,
I tried and failed to get photo's onto the SS site direct. so went your way with flicr. I copied and pasted what
what was on the site site address when all the photo's were in the site paste below. i havent tried it so hope it works. i will leave the site up on my computer until i here from you. if you cant see them can you let me know the steps to save.
The auto wipers are the best. its been raining here for two weeks and turning the wipers off and on in drizzly rain drives me crackers.
Had mine off road on a 20 acre lot the other day and went to the back along a very very deep pot hole muddy water filled track. No probs but I kind of think the subie might be a tad better in really rough conditions. when i say deep i had to let the car down real light as it bottomed a couple of times. I felt the back come around marginally once. having compared the subie i am not sure it would have made it given the depth of the potholes and this his a much higher car.
i am on 9.8 l/100 at the moment with the majority of the 3k in the city.
I forgot you have the le so bigger and different wheels as well. i will have another look at your photo's.
Just a word of caution the fuel reader is not real reliable. I didnt run out but nearly did. It went from 100kms left to 0 in about 50kms. Actually amazing it didnt run out given the gauge was on 0 kms left for about 5 kms until i could get off the motorway into a servo.
Re the BMW i can see the new model dating real quick. I mean it takes a seasoned eye to tell the difference bwn the so called brand new model and a x5 thats 10 years old. holden did this with the hq and MB have come in with a new shape and i think that BMW should have done the X5 its due and did the same. I mean it is different, longer / wider but it still looks the same.
the beauty about the volvo is that the client knows its entry level luxury so I dont have to park it around the corner plus its handy if they're upset with me as i can make a speedy getaway.

Cheers
Hatdriver
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/?saved=1

You have done well !
I found issues with uploading to SS so the flickr option was indeed the easiest. You can even just email your pics direct to flickr via the address you get for your site making it ultra easy to add more.
Thanks for the fuel reading advice - my last car was worse than that actually as I regularly went from 150kms until empty to 0kms after only 50 !
Yes, a Volvo is a lot more discrete than other "luxury" options. I prefer that I am seen as a bit eccentric rather than some badge snob ! Helps when visiting farmers...
Nice to see the RSE screens. Where is the player ?
I have noticed your seatback pockets are completely different to mine - I have the perforated leather and not the netting you appear to have. Quite strange. I will post some more pics later as although I have uploaded a heap, I have still missed some areas !

Hi,
wonder if the netting on the seats in mine has something to do with it not being a le??
the player is in the centre console - its fitted so that the 8x8x3" player is fixed to the side of the interior console. works well actually. while volvo market the rse as being capable of game console input and indeed there is a video input/sound jack (which no other manufacturer has to my knowledge) the fuses keep blowing when you hook up the inverter to the cigarette lighter (because the Playstation is 240v needed the inverter to jump it from 9v to 240v). so i dont know how they powered the one in their little marketing movie clip or what game console they were using but it turns out the dvd player is on the same fuse as the cigarette lighter hence the blown fuses I suspect. so i am stuck with movies which is still pretty good.
Cheers
Hatdriver

I have uploaded a couple of pics showing my seat pockets. I would guess it is either because I have the vented seats or because you have the RSE. I am a long way from the dealer so I can't see what is standard. I really doubt it is a LE thing as it is just a package of discounted options (with nothing unique) after all...
Pity about your RSE game console connection. Have you tried any other input like a videocamera to see if that works OK ?

Hi NTS,
when total confusion reigned I read the book. It actually details that the kms to empty sign will go to -- when (after 21) the 20km point is reached. I expect that you had that slightly sweaty, uneasy feeling I recently experienced!! Not a good feeling when you think you're running on empty but its actually just the way the gauge goes, i.e. 20kms and then empty.
I assume that you commenced the 871kms trip with a full tank and that it was a no hills run?? Anyways 871kms is a great range.
Also slowly swinging the mrs. from a c class estate over to a xc70 and i rather think when she takes the 200 kompressor for a run the comparison with the xc d5 should swing it.
I was having a look at the aussie volvo site the other day and i kind of think that the cars have gone up in price. I did notice also, that the dark fineline is only available for the petrol and d5 se but NOT the le It is odd but its there in black and white its just not offered/available. that is weird.
Have you seen the interior of the new oceanrace xc70 yet??
cheers
Hatdriver.

Hattie,
Thanks for the info on the trip computer display - I hadn't read that... Yes, I was a bit anxious driving on empty. Once you get to zero (under 20kms to go), there must be about 4-5 litres left at the most !
Have you had the package from Volvo ? (some pics in my gallery) ?
That 871kms was wrong - actually 821 - ho ho ho - mistake my way ! That did include some commuting and running around town but mainly trips (with hills !). It wasn't as superfull as when I filled up (to get the 67 litres in) so I will see what I get next time.
The C Class estate was a close thing for me. I needed that ground clearance though. Bit small inside and certainly not any cheaper if you get the diesel...
There is supposed to be a July 1 price increase as well as some decontenting in various models (the XC90 lost its standard third row A/C) but I couldn't see anything yet. The website is error filled though as it lists that the XC70 has electric folding rear headrests !
Yes, indeed, get a LE and you get wood - I was able to get the dealer to change it over to what they had on other cars instock but I would have much preferred that fineline trim....
Haven't seen the oceanrace - have you a link ?

hey guys, this was a great read!! just wanted to add that our xc90 had the DVD player (roof mounted alpine unit) installed before we bought it new (only has 3k's on it when i picked it up) but due to a faulty install needed to be completely replaced, it blew 3 fuses (yes connected to 12V cigarrette lighters too).

Hi Trentyn,
How is it that everyone on this site has got an accessory shop on wheels except me!!
is yours the d5, petrol or V8 and is it metallic black or black. I had a look at the 90 and whilst it is about the same length and maybe a tad wider i just wanted a jacked up wagon as i have to whip around philip street and do a lot of metro driving.
i wonder if volvo will go the way of merc & bmw and with the next 90 bring out an even bigger car. i pretty much think so given that is exactly what they did with the xc70. i dont mind though given that is the reason i bought it. i do a lot of country driving and it is disquietening to know that i am sharing the road with a bunch of geriatric drivers who think nothing of throwing down a handful of pills and then getting onto the highway and doing (80 kph in a 100kph for 5-6 hours or least until lunch when they have to throw down more pills. You would not believe how many cars i have seen turned over etc with the roadway usually strewn with those ugly pastel colored crocheyed pillows. i speak to a lot of accident police and i asked them once which is the safest vehicle to which I received the reply, get a lamp pole or a tree. I am a bit slow but after a few seconds caught on and pursued my original question (not wanting to look too stupid) and they all say get 'high and heavy'. so you have done well getting the 90 given the built in safety features and it is 'high and heavy'. high so you dont go under and heavy is just a physics thing. i have had a few near misses over the years on the road (most which relate to old fogies hence my remark above) and in all seriousness i do actually feel safer in the xc. of course, there is also the comfort and space.....
I really liked the black xc70 and if i can get two at the same time then it will definitely be the black. having said that i really like my white. its just that the black shows off the chrome much better.
was the dvd a genuine volvo accessory as i think the roof mounted ones were an option. i got the built in as i had dreams of fitting a ps2. I think they those swedes havent quiet got the electrics right and i could see how they might overlook something like an inverter fitted to a lighter to make the ps2 work. would have liked to be there though when the guys putting the promo movie together tried to get ps2 to work on the built in rse. I bet pounds to pence there were some urgent calls to the factory so those two little kids in the back got that thing working.
Cheers
Hatdriver
ps hope you arent a pensioner!!
Hi T,
if your getting the occasional vertical line going slowly up the screen try a couple of $5 suppressors from dick smith i think there model number is R520 or something similar anyway. the geek from DS suggested to put one on the lead into and another on the lead out. Unless you were lucky enough to have bought the real time inverter when ds was still selling them...they dont stock them anymore. in the end, i pretty much figure that if was to rectify the power problem it will be to have an auto electrician to get in there and do some cutting and connecting and i dont want to go down that track just at the moment. we have a german shepherd hence the order for the rear tray cover and the steel barrier divider.
do you know what model inverter you have as I may have bought a more powerful model which of course is blowing the fuses. seems odd that you can get your ds inverter to work and i cant.
i couldnt find the photo in the thread. there is a blue question mark at the bottom which may have been it but when you click nothing happens.
re the queen bed - i never realised the interior was that big.
cheers
Hatdriver.
