My first Volvo was a 1963 544 Sport which I paid $500 for, and then I put an IPD camshaft in it, with ported cylinder head and double springs. It would rev like a chain saw. I added Pirelli CN36 radials (same as the turbo Porsche that year) and an all new black interior and Chrysler dark maroon paint job. Then with a pair of big SU carbs off a Jaguar sedan and headers (and a nice big quiet free flow muffler) that thing was a BMW killer. It was great fun, the 411 rear end would pull like a freight train up to 90 miles per hour and then it became readily apparant that the 544 was about as aerodynamic as a.....well......BRICK. :-) It handled like a truck, of course.
I have also owned an Alfa 1600 Guila Spider which tied in 1965 with the Lotus Elan as "best handling sports car", a TR-6 which I also hot rodded to the same extent as the 544 and therefore exceeded the capability of the chassis, a TR-6 powered TVR which I also hot rodded and still have that is dangerously fast (with overdrive on all 4 gears), three Porsche cars, a couple of Broncos, and now a 2005 XC70 AWD which I drive regularly and love, and a 2008 3.2 AWD that my wife drives and loves. These Volvos are really quite amazing cars, good performers and very easy to live with. Oh did I say safe too! :-) I should also note I have two weed-eaters and a MF-135, along with a couple 427-Ford powered boats, and a couple small block Chevy powered boats as well. Yes I'm nuts. People tell me that all the time.
The Swedespeed forums are an absolutely wonderful service to Volvo owners. I use them all the time having two Volvos now, and they sure help make Volvo ownership so much easier. Thanks guys.
Here are some photos of the Volvo cars, you may have to cut and paste them.
Our 2005 2.5 XC70 rocket, this is what I drive when the 928 stays home.
Our 2008 XC90 3.2 AWD, this is the safe and stylish car my wife drives, and we use for long trips. It is a great driver.
Our 2004 2.5 XC90 AWD that we put 133,000 miles on, loved it.
My latest project, a Ford 427 FE marine motor, destined for a 1973 Chris Craft Lancer re-power, and I will not be towing the boat with a XC90. The 351W Bronco will get that job. No balance shaft here !!
