      Exclamation Today's Musical Selection

Much in the same manor as Steely's Daily Inspirational Quotes, here is a daily tune for your listening/viewing pleasure. When possible, I will try to make the music relevant to something happening in our world...or here on SS..and sometimes it will just be a personal favorite. ENJOY todays tune

I like your idea with the music Bob!!!!!! I felt the need to add this one This has no connection with today... but one of my personal older favorites... completely raw and original. This song on Vinyl turns my sound room into a true live performance!!!!

      Enjoy

I would guess that it was @ 1972ish ... Before TB Schmidt and Joe Walsh.
Schmidt was still with Poco and Walsh was out on his own after leaving The James Gang. Remember Funk #49?...that was Joe
The Doolin Daltons album is still one of my faves
      We'll enjoy another tune tomarrow

Went to Bonnaroo this year and many of the acts are already available for download at http://www.archive.org Just do a search in the top window for Bonnaroo 2008. So far I have downloaded and put some great music from Phil Lesh and Friends, Derek Trucks, My Morning Jacket and Jack Johnson on my iPod which I listen to in my car....great stuff!

Still waiting for the Feat to show up there but haven't seen it yet...many were taping and it was a great set!

This was a 1969 Vietnam Era song. AMAZING how it still has perfect relivance today They may laugh at all of us 50+ year old former hippies...but as a movement, there was a vision....and we are still chasing it, and although we may never reach the intended result, it does not stop me from hoping Enjoy the excellent guitar work of Alvin Lee

Hard to believe he is 60!!! He started when he was 17. IMO, he is a truly gifted songwriter. His social commentaries and his soulful insights into personal struggles make it seems like sometimes he is reciting events in my own life.

Jimmy Buffet! Great selection. Here is video I uploaded from a digital (non-movie) camera taken a year ago of J.B. in Atlanta. It was my first show and very memorable!

      Re: (universityvolvoOSD)

The "A Space In Time" album (with "I'd Love To Change The World") came out in 1971, I think. I was a huge TYA fan in high school, and have all of their original albums on vinyl. Alvin Lee is a great guitarist, although some have argued that his playing is a little repetitive at times. But he sure is fast! I saw TYA live in Chicago, sometime in the early 70's. It was after the album that had Choo-Choo Mama, and Back to Birmingham on it - I forget the name of that album. But basically towards the end of their peak years.

Interestingly, the other three members of TYA have been touring again in recent years, minus Alvin, using the name TYA. (Leo Lyons on bass, Chick Churchill on keyboards, and Ric Lee on drums.) Even though the other three are pretty good musiciians, Alvin was obviously the heart and soul of the group, as guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. So this "new TYA" didn't sound too promising to me. But I went to see them a year or two ago at the Sausolito Art Festival. They had found a younger guy named Joe Gooch, who replicates Alvin's guitar style very well, and even sings reasonably like him. So it turned out to be a great show, with all of the big songs being covered.

My overall favorite TYA album remains "Cricklewood Green", with "Ssssh" and "A Space In Time" being right up there. Their double live album is also a pretty good capturing of a TYA concert. One obscure album is their "Undead" (get it?) live album, which was actually only their second album, and was recorded in a little club in the UK. Most of it is more jazz-oriented, although it also has the "original" (pre-Woodstock, I think) version of "I'm Going Home". Played a little less frenetically than later versions, but in my opinion it's a better version by virture of being a tad slower-tempo'd. Also check out the version of Woody Herman's "Woodchopper's Ball", which Alvin and company just rip through.

Must... rescue... thread... with... music... but... music... must... be... old... enough... for... Bob... to... appreciate...

For redemption from any and all, refer to my first post for "Peace of Mind" by Boston, quite possibly the greatest classic rock song ever.

But in case scrolling up is not an option...

      Hey,
There's nothing wrong with Jimmy Buffet...I'm going to the beach in 2 days- gets me in "the mood."
I'm also a recovering Dead Head and have over 600 shows at my disposal...other than that, I love Dylan and try to get my hands on as much of the Black Crowes as I can. Oh, lately, been into Alejandro Escovedo who I have tickets to go see in Asheville, N.C. next month. If you've never heard of him, check his music out here: http://www.alejandroescovedo.com/ Really great stuff! Btw, I like all good music as good music is timeless to me.
      Regards,
      MIJ

P.S. I used to crank up Peace of Mind (Boston) on vinyl as a kid and my folks would have to tell me to turn it down.

Listening to anything softer than "Panama" in a blacked out, cammed, Z51 would be unacceptable. How in the world can you even hear CSN with that thing gurgling away?

      Hey MIJ,
Do you have 1992 Hampton, VA show? they had to bill it as a Warlocks show,
if you have the second night (the night they played Dark Star) i would love to get my hands on that. It was a late spring or early summer show (i think) i would have to check my ticket stub when i get home.

      Let me know. Thanks!!!!

Went to a Buffet show, only to be disappointed at seeing Larry David impersonating a musician.

Listening to Jimmy Buffet all day made me want to kill the people in the limo with me. It was a sad day.

Yes, I have that and it's an awesome show (I think I have both sets from the night they did D.S.). I don't have it on CD but if you'll wait a couple of weeks (after I get back from the beach) I'll burn it to disc and send it to you.

I ponder the inventions of man and the accomplishments of the simplist of men. I marvel at the beauty of this Earth. I watch as children resolve their petty playground issues, as siblings squawble, yet love each other dearly,
I see man's ability to overcome differences and repsect one another...and then there is this.....and I wonder WHY?

We had a neighborhood picnic on the 4th, and since you can sort of see the neighboring town's fireworks display from our back yard, some folks stuck around to watch. I had make a quick playlist on my iPod for "USA" themed music, to play during the fireworks, using a sort of loose criteria:

      - Springsteen's "Born in the USA" (yes, I realize it's actually more of a protest song)
      - several of John Mellencamp's "Americana" songs, like Small Town, Our Country, etc.
      - Steve Miller Band - "Living in the USA"
      - Beach Boys "Surfin' USA"

And to have a bit more patriotic content, I downloaded "Proud to be an American" (Lee Greenwood), as well as the Marine Band version of "Stars and Stripes Forever".

But the one that everyone seemed to get a big kick out of was a downloaded medley from the old Jimmy Cagney movie, "Yankee Doodle Dandy". The medley being a sort of combination of "Yankee Doodle" and "Grand Old Flag", with snippets of 4 or 5 other songs blended in. If you've never seen this movie, which is sort of a bio-pic about George M. Cohan - it's worth watching. Especially if you mostly think of Cagney's gangster roles, and didn't realize that he started out as a song-and-dance man. The tap-dancing sequence from the movie cam across pretty well in the recording.
