      Re: (universityvolvoOSD)

My wife and I saw the Police last night (at the "Sleeptrain" Pavilion, in Concord, CA - east bay part of SF Bay Area).

The opening act was Elvis Costello, and his current band, the Imposters. It was a too-brief set for me, since I like Costello a lot, being just under an hour. But it was probably about right for the Police fans. I would have preferred more songs from his older albums, but I will say that the newer songs were also pretty good. The finish was very strong - "Watching the Detectives", then "Alison" (with Sting walking out after the first verse to duet on the rest), and then "What's So Funny... About Peace, Love, and Understanding" to close. No cameo appearance by his wife, Diana Krall. His band is pretty tight, and Elvis is not too bad a guitarist. Apparently he had been kind of sick, with a hoarse voice from his show two days previous at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, and spent yesterday in bed, watching TV. Elvis had a few funny comments on watching "America's Got Talent" in his hotel room...

I wasn't sure what to expect from the Police. They played in the Bay Area a year ago, at the very start of their reunion tour, to generally bad reviews. I wasn't at that show, and so can't directly compare this show to the last one, but they seemed to be in pretty good form last night. It was Stewart Copeland's birthday - maybe this leads to trying harder? Or maybe they have just gotten their act a bit more together after a year on the road. (It will be interesting to see the reviews from this show, to see if our local critics agree.) The Police aren't much for stagecraft, and it is just the three of them playing, with no additional musicians, no back-up singers, etc. So it's all up to them. Keeping that in mind, they do a good job on recreating their songs. With only about 200 minutes of original recording output (five albums, all in the age of 40-minute vinyl LPs), they manage to play maybe 40% of their catalog during a just under 2-hour concert (since some of the live versions do get extended slightly).

Pretty much all of their most well-known songs got covered. They don't vary the set list, at least not much. The set list below is from the two-days earlier Shoreline concert, it matches my memory of last night pretty closely, but I didn't write things down, and may be forgetting something.

      Message in a Bottle
      Walking on the Moon
      Demolition Man
      Voices in My Head
When the World Is Running Down
Don't Stand So Close to Me
      Driven to Tears
      Hole in My Life
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
      Wrapped Around Your Finger
      De Do Do Do
      Invisible Sun
      Can't Stand Losing You
      Encores:
      Roxanne
      King of Pain
      So Lonely
      Every Breath You Take
      Next to You

The main show ended after "Can't Stand Losing You", appropriate with its lyric about "last goodbye". The next four consitute the main encore, and then they came back again to do "Next To You". I don't know about the critics, but I left the concert a very satisfied customer.

II saw the show two nights earlier, in Mt.View. Exactly the same show, even down to the onstage banter, which I hate but which is what 99.99999% of the bands do.

Agree re Elvis. A few more songs would've been great. He was also sick at the Mt. View show and Sting sang Alison at our show. Makes me wonder how long Elvis has been "sick." I am guessing this is shtick. But it worked. The Imposters RAGED in Mt. View, and I am guessing they did the same in Concord. Not mellow, at all.

Police were far better than time around than last year in Oaktown. That show was marginal, but I had terrrrrible seats in Oakland and real good seats this time.

I was amazed at how much music Elvis and the I's put out. It was a WALL of sound. Then the Police come out and put out a ton of sound with only THREE guys. Crazy.

      Re: (adp)

ADP - Glad you enjoyed the Mt. View show. I've been looking around at some reviews, and the guy who had totally panned last year's Oakland show in the Contra Costa Times (his headline last year was "Sting stunk, and so did the Police") gave the Mt. View show very positive reviews.

It seems that the Police stay very much to script, although there have been at least some set list changes from last year to now.

In looking at the set list for Elvis at Mt. View - he mixes it up from show to show a bit more. Actually, the Mt. View set looked a little better to my tastes. From a blog:

“Pump It Up” (also played at Concord, but as second song)
“Mystery Dance” (not played at Concord, but wish it was)
“Everyday I Write the Book” (played)
      “American Gangster Time” (played)
“Radio Radio” (not played, but wish it was)
      “Clubland” (not played)
      “Watching the Detectives” (played)
      “Alison” (with Sting) (played)
“(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding” (played)

(There was also a response to the above blog entry that said: He also played “No Hiding Place” and “Turpentine” from Momofuku and “Uncomplicated” from Blood & Chocolate. These might have also been played at Concord - I'm mostly familiar with his first several albums.)

Two un-played songs that I would have wanted to hear were "Angels Want To Wear My Red Shoes", and "Beyond Belief".

His voice was pretty strong at Concord. He said that he had been sick, but was better after spending the previous day in bed.

      Re: (reschleicher)

some folks hated El;vis's set. I heard a guy on KFOG this a.m. pan it. Seems he wanted something straight off the albums. I didn't and don't. I can hear the albums at home. I want the band to play it as if they wrote the song TODAY, and have some new take on it. (but I'm a Grateful Dead fan, so whaddya expect?) The Imposters keyboard player was RAGING, and that was a lot of fun. As was Elvis, himself (though not on vocals). Lots of fun; very interesting. Not much to my daughter's liking, but this is only her second concert (first was Stevie Wonder). She knows the Police's body of work, but I had to force feed her Elvis the day of the show. Fortunately, she'd heard most of the tunes, as well as me singing along and explaining the lyrics (which is not an easy task). Next show may be Steely Dan, and I won't even start trying to explain those lyrics.

let's move this stuff to https://forums.swedespeed.com/z...&id=4 so as to not take Bob's musical selection thread into the weeds

      Hey MIJ,
Do you have 1992 Hampton, VA show? they had to bill it as a Warlocks show,
if you have the second night (the night they played Dark Star) i would love to get my hands on that. It was a late spring or early summer show (i think) i would have to check my ticket stub when i get home.

      Let me know. Thanks!!!!

      Chappy,
I sent you an IM about this. If you didn't get it, message or email me (email is in my signature).
      Regards,
      MIJ

Good video of ELP! I also saw them sometime after Brain Salad Surgery came out. It might well have been 1974. It was in the Assembly Hall at the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana), which is a round arena. They had the robot sounds from Karn Evil 9 spinning around the arena, which was pretty cool. Emerson also had one of his keyboards (his big Hammond organ, perhaps) mounted on a gigantic gimbal arrangement, so that he could strap himself in, and he and his organ would rotate end-over-end while playing. But even when stationary it was cool to watch him playing two keyboards simultaneously, one in front of him, and one behind. Although I don't necessarily think that more drums makes for a better drummer, Carl Palmer had an impressive kit!

This reminds me that someone I knew had the Quadrophonic LP of Brain Salad Surgery, which was maybe one of the few times when Quadrophonic provided a better approximation of a live concert than did stereo (or at least of the special effects).
