I recently purchased a 2004 XC90. I have the High Performance Sound according to the screen during power-up.
What is the difference between the High Performance Sound and the Premium Sound?
Is there any difference in the head-unit?
Are different amps used, and are any class-d?
Are the speakers different between the systems?
Does the Premium Sound use Dynaudio (I have Dynaudio in my other car and love them)?
If so can the Dynaudio speakers be ordered and fitted for an upgrade?
Thanks for your help. I searched and spent about an hour, but didn't come to definitive answers to these questions.

Dynaudio is more than just speakers. Go to http://www.volvocars.us and use the build your own feature to see what exactly is in the Dynaudio package. As the XC90's wiring is fiber optic; I doubt you'll be able to successfully plug and play other HU's and speakers. You may want to check out the various Denison Gateway threads in this forum to help you out.
Re: Premium or High Performance Sound on XC90 - Differences? Upgrades? (njb8199)
I followed the link but didn't see the differences explained.
Is it possible to upgrade the High Performance to Premium? Can the Dynaudio speakers from the later year cars be retrofitted to the High Performance system?
The premium sound system in the 2004 models have the 6-CD changer, external audio amplifier with Dolby Prologic II processing and 12 speakers. The speakers are not branded Dynaudio, I do not know who makes them.
The amplifier is made by Alpine, it is an analog amplifier, no Class-D, with 5 channels: 4 x 70W plus 25W for the center speaker.
An active subwoofer can be added for the 5-seat configuration in the USA. The 7-seat configuration has an extra air condition compressor in the back that takes the place of the subwoofer.
I have the 6-CD changer in my High Performance Sound unit, and externally it appears to be the same as the Premium Sound System. Is the Dolby Prologic II processing in the external amplifier unit, or is the head-unit different also? I am hoping that it might be possible to upgrade the amplifier, and change out the speakers for the late-model Dynaudio units.
I could fit aftermarket Dynaudio speakers, but would prefer a more acoustically optimized drop-in solution without the fabrication. I have 7-seat configuration so I would have to either do without the sub or come up with a custom solution.
Thanks for the input. I have searched but can't find any specific information about the two system configurations. Any further info is appreciated.
It was worth it for me. We test drove an `04 T6 without the subwoofer and an `04 2.5T with the subwoofer. Both had premium sound. There's practically no bass without a subwoofer. I've yet to own an SUV that had sufficient cavity space to produce good bass.
is the optional subwoofer worth the money. Seems pretty pricey, but if it makes major difference it might be worth considering.
Yes. My partner is an audiophile (think Bang & Olufsen) and he http://********************/smile/emlove.gif the Dynaudio system that we have and our system has the subwoofer.

The digital signal processor that handles the Dolby Prologic II is in the external amplifier box which goes under the front passenger seat. Note that changing the speakers will require new equalization for each speaker, which is also done by the DSP in the amplifier.
The newer Dynaudio system uses a Class-D amplifier with 130W/channel as opposed to the 70W/channel for the analog amplifier. The Class-D amplifier
is also made by Alpine and have ICEPower Class-D technology. The DSP engine has two Motorola/Freescale DSP56371 signal processors with 300MIPS of computing power. The older analog system uses one Motorola/Freescale DSP56366 at 120MIPS for processing.
The High Performance Sound system has an analog amnplifier with 4 channels of 40W each, and 8 speakers. The standard configuration has a single-CD player, but can be upgraded to have the 6-CD changer. There is no Dolby Prologic II function.
So what I am wondering is if I could change out the amp and speakers for the amp and Dynaudio speakers used in the late model units?
The other alternative I have identified is to use an Alpine PXE-H650 processor off of the outputs of the existing amp, an aftermarket digital amp, and aftermarket speakers.
The factory Dynaudio speakers with the associated amp from a late model XC90 would be a much more elegant solution, especially if the wiring harness is already there.

Thanks for your help and opinion.
You might be able to get the volvo parts and do it yourself. It might require a software upgrade. I don't think anybody has ever done this before though.
The problem with going with a processor off the existing amp is that the existing amp is 4x40@10% I think, so your processor, new amps, speakers etc, will not be getting the best quality signal.
...

The main issue for using the new Volvo/Alpine digital amp is the connection to the optical MOST bus, and the software needed to operate the system. I do not expect that the standard Volvo software is usable in a mixed system, where the CD player is an old model, maybe the tuner also is not compatible, etc.

This would be easier to be done, because you are maintaining the original MOST system (so it will be compatible with all the original Volvo software), and adding a new amplifier which is connected using analog outputs of the original amp. There will be some [minor] quality degradation in the analog signal, and unless there are line outs of the present amplifier, there will be need to put some dummy speaker loads for the speaker outputs otherwise the amplifier may detect and signal an open load condition (this is my guess, I am not sure if the amplifier has this level of diagnostics).

You may be able to replace the speakers, but the amp is a different story.
Regardless of model, in the XC90, the "headunit" is nothing more than a keyboard/display device. It does not perform any audio function whatsoever.
The conversion from digital (MOST) to analog (including any Dolby processing) happens at the amplifier unit under the passenger seat. If you have the headphone devices on the C-pillar, these are also driven by the amp box as well.
The main differences between the "High Performance" and the "Premium" systems are the amp and the number of speakers. (well, and the default 1-CD vs 6-CD player, but that can be upgraded).
To upgrade the HP system to a Premium system, you would have to add the extra speakers, replace the amplifier and reload the software. This last part is critical: without, there will not be any audio.
And this is also the reason why you can't replace your amp with a newer vintage: the software required to operate it is not available.
BTW, I have seen XC90s upgraded from HP to Premium audio. Back in 2004, one of the guys at the dealer showed me an HP amp that he had removed during an upgrade. He mentioned that it had been pretty straight-forward, except when it was time to install that center speaker. I can't remember the details, but I vaguely remember something about the wiring.

If you are willing to go that way, you may want to consider what others have done: push the OEM HU out of the way (can't be removed without getting all sort of problems) and install an off-the-shelf radio. This alternative gives you the most choices.

Don't count on it. You may be lucky... or not.
You have the HP system which has less speakers. It is likely that the extra wiring was not installed at the factory.
Synesis, did you upgrade your amplifier to Premium?
I was looking around for an advice, and it seems, that I found similar problem with my car, i posted it on another forum:
i discovered that my 2004 XC90 audio is pretty simple, it has only 4 door speakers. I checked the tweeter holes in the front doors, and in the back pillars, and opened the central dash speaker grille, and found that there actually are wires which give some signal (except the central) when I tested with speakers. So i decided to install the appropriate tweeters, and also the central speaker since i have no Satnav. I found original Volvo speakers.
So far the upgrade seemed to work perfectly.
The tweeters sound great, unless now i have to turn the volume higher to activate the left speakers after start-up.
But the central speaker does not produce any sound.
Are central speaker wires in the dash connected on the other end to the head unit or the amplifier? If yes, how can I activate it?
How can I reset the silly left speaker not sounding at low volume?
Is it ok for the system that i added the speakers without changing or adding an apmlifier?

The sound for the central speaker is created by the Dolby Prologic II algorithm running in the DSP processor located in the amplifier of the premium sound system. It has its own dedicated power amplifier channel as well.
So I assume, there is no DSP processor in the Performance amp.
Can I DIY replace the basic Performance sound amplifier with the Premium sound amplifier?
I think the official story is something like, Volvo: "we upgraded the sound systems, so we feel that a subwoofer option isn't necessary." but, yeah, only 7-seat models and all equipped qith rear AC is probably the reason.
With these factory upgraded systems, a subwoofer always made the difference in the extra thump. Otherwise, you end up with tons of muddy bass in trying to replciate the same frequency curve. Even if you only have small subs (which is always my favorite).
Update: i just installed a used premium amp and got the necessary software from Volvo. I now have the Premium startup-screen + all the Dolby options available in the menus. I've ordered the center speaker and the door speakers (front+rear) and will install them shortly there is a connector wired up underneath the center grille already, so hopefully it will be a plug & pray operation.
So, was it plug and play? Did you need a new wiring harness for the Premium amp or use the one already in place? Did the passenger seat need to come out or did you do it in place? Do you have part no.s for the center and door speakers? You upgraded the door speakers to the 75w speakers from the 25w speakers and added the center channel speaker, correct? Any special clips or screws needed for changing out the door speakers? Sometimes these are riveted in place at the factory.
To summarize, parts needed for upgrade from High Performance sound to Premium sound:
1. 4x75w (300w) amp - 30732825
2. Center channel speaker - p/n?
3. Front door 75w speakers - p/n?
4. Rear door 75w speakers - p/n?
5. Amp software upgrade - 6849972
6. Aud reload software - 8691143 (what is this for?)
I have 2013 XC90, so subwoofer won't apply due to 3rd row seat installed.
Edit: Just learned that may have to upgrade head unit (display) due to factory HD radio. Anyone have any experience with this on the later model XC90s?
Here is what I found so far:
1. the High Performance system can be upgradeable to Premium for sure.
2. The key requirements to complete the upgrade:
a. Replace the HP Amp with (4x25W) with the premium amp (4x75w+1 center channel)
b. Perform an IAM reload with premium audio at your local dealer Part number from bjoroy is: 6849972 , my dealer quoted me $80/-. Dealer also says I may need the AMP application for the new AMP, I'll have to see what it is.
c. Install the center channel speaker. About $50/- new from the local dealer.
Optional:
d. If you are extremely picky, upgrade the rest of the speakers in the car. Based on the feedback the quality jump does not justify the price. So I decided to stick with the base speakers.
My Amp is on its way, I'll update the thread as soon as I'm finished with my upgrade.
1. Amplifier Part#: 30732825 - It is important to have the right part number. You can get a list from the dealer.
2. Center Channel Speaker: Bought it on ebay for $45/-. But you can find a new one for 75 at www.volvowholesaleparts.com
3. Now install the amp and the speakers - should take you about 10 minutes or so.
4. Go to the dealer and ask for software download. My dealer was knowledgeable and gave me the right part numbers (I have a 2006 XC90): i) AUD RELOAD part# 8691143 ($70/-) ii) AUD PREMIUM SOUND - 6849972 ($25/-).
This should be all you need, I now have the center channel working. I just need to fix my door rattling at high base and install the dynaudio speakers. It is very much less expensive than installing an aftermarket sub or some other stuff.
Special thanks to bjoroy for his timely help with the part number madness.
Congrats! You did it. Please do let us know if the upgrade is worth it. The MY 2012 XC90 D5 R-Design does come with Premium Sound as standard package and hope to sign one before the offer is over.
Hey hey, you did it congratulations! And you're very welcome by the way. It's really worth the time and money to do this upgrade... I did it myself (HP -> Premium) about 6 months ago.
But, I have the same problem as you. A little bit of door rattle, especially when listening to Cohen @ > 50% volume. I replaced the door speakers with premium ones, and also replaced the rivets with metal screws. Think I'll start with taking the door trim off this weekend and put in a little wider screws + check the trim clips...
Hey while you guys are on the stereo kick, may I ask a question about tuning??? In my dropdowns in the tuner you can tune the individual rows of speakers. Is there a standard for general music, rock/pop. How do I want all the bar graphs to look? I have the nav option too and my dropdowns say I have a center speaker... Any input would be great. Thanks
Was the new amp instalation just plug and play and diy?
Was the system working with out software reload?
How did the dealer reload the new amp software?
My door rattling dissapeared after removing the inside cover, then finding nothing to rattle and then putting it back the problem just dissapeared. my suspicion is that tat was caused bu the door lock button metal arm. but it is nearly impossible to find thet source of rattling not seeing te assembled door from inside
My XC90 is sold before I upgraded it to Premium sound. So I have full set of four tweeters and the central console speaker for sale now. please let me know if anyone is interested.
I also have a spare Premium amplifier 30732825.
The XC90 with a 3 way front speaker on active and a sub makes beautiful sound with a sound processor.
Replacing the original Dynaudio speakers with the aftermarket ones creates a dtc code that indicates front speakers AUD (Audio) is missing. Just a DTC code, no messages thrown out on console display nor check lights.
For those into car audiophile, the speaker of my choice was the Focal Utopia 3 way with the Beryllium. Way better than the stock Dynaudio speakers.
