Yep the 06-07 automatic TF-80SC is the same as uses in the XC90 V8, XC90 3.2, the new S80, new XC70, new V70, XC60. It is also used by Peugeot, Citroen, Ford, Mazda, Opel, Vauxhall, Saab, Cadillac, Fiat, Renault and Alfa.

Aisin is partially owned by Toyota, so the design is also essentially the same as what is used in Totoya and Lexus' FWD biased products like the Camry, ES350, RX350, etc.

The V8 should bolt to the M66, but that would need some modification of the frame to say the least. I think I'd rather do an R engine & M66 transplant into an XC90.

The 1999-2005 models with 5 speed transmissions used the Aisin AW55 or AW55-AWD transmission. This is essentially the same transmission they Toyota and Lexus used in their FWD 5 speed models. It was also used in one version or another by many different Euro car makes.

so did/does Toyota have the same quality issues with this transmission that they (the supplier!) passed to Volvo for the P2 cars?

Aisin really screwed up production quality for volvo's gearboxes.

seems then this autocar article saying the XC90 V8 used an Aisin Warner box is simply wrong then?

V8 has always used the TF-80SC from launch?

      here's the autocar article

      quote

"It‚Äôs mated to Volvo‚Äôs first six-speed automatic ‚Äď effectively the five-speed Aisin-Warner ‚Äôbox used by several Volvos but with a heavily overdriven extra ratio. There‚Äôs also been a development of the XC90‚Äôs Haldex four-wheel-drive system to prime the rear wheels with torque before take-off. This virtually eliminates wheelspin on greasy surfaces or when pulling away sharply. Volvo calls it Instant Traction."

      google search and http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/te...3.pdf

The TF-80SC is also an Aisin Warner transmission

i dunno, the TF-80 seems to be ok. I think it was just the AW-55-51

The article is partially incorrect. Aisin Warner does not exist anymore. The company was a joint venture with BorgWarner but the deal was terminated in 1987 and Aisin Seki Co. renamed their transmission unit Aisin AW. Aisin AI makes manuals, Aisin AW makes automatics. Aisin AW was started in 1969 before the joint venture, and this was the company that co-developed the Prius transmission with Volvo. Yes, Volvo was part of the hybrid transmission development but sold their interest in the project when they were acquired by Ford.

All modern Volvo automatics are made by Aisin AW. This includes the four speed AW 4052 on the 850/S70/V70, the 700/900 series used the Aisin AW30-40, AW70, AW70L, AW71, AW72L (and some used a ZF transmission for a while). The only notable exception to this was the S80 and XC90 with the T6 which used a General Motors GM4T65E or GM4T65EG because the Aisin four and five speed boxes were too large.

The Aisin transmissions are not problem prone per se in regards to industry averages. One thing to keep in mind is that Volvo's engines are probably some of the more powerful ones used with the Aisin transmissions historically.

Nope, you have it backwards. There are a few issues with drivability with the AW-55, but those can be corrected by software. There have been more than a handful of failures of the TF-80, and a valve body replacement issue.

      Re: (Needsdecaf)

are you discussing the failure of just the transmission itself or angle gear, splines, etc failures as well?
