Suggestions for tires for my '98 V70R going cross country to CA

So as most of you know, my brother is buying my saffron '98 V70R. He's flying or maybe driving out here in early December and will be driving the car back to Mammoth Lakes CA. Apparently they get a ton of snow out there and I'm telling him he absolutely needs snow tires. I've got Bridgestone Traction T/A all seasons that are about done.

I'm thinking about either Bridgestone Blizaak or Conti Extreme Winter Contact DWS for him on the existing wheel which is a 16". Thoughts that would do well on a 2000 miles journey cross most of the country and get him through the heavy snow this winter?

Looks like Tire Rack is offering the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D in the H speed rating for $98 each, and in the V speed rating for $108.

I run the run-flat version on my 335 in the winter, and they do very well in all winter weather conditions.

I am ordering a set of the Continental Extreme Winter Contacts in the next couple of weeks. I would think either these or the Blizzaks would be fine. He will need summer tires or all seasons for warmer months so maybe you should get the new tires mounted on a set of steelies.

Vredestein and Nokian makes some of the best snow tires but they can be hard to find. If they make the Nokian WR in the right size, its an all season with snow specs. XC90 owners have used it, myself included, a great year round tire.

Blizaaks are ok, they feel like a snow tire on the V70R (had them on my '00 V70R and currently on my T5). Even the more performance oriented snow tire, like the Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi, I had on my '06 V70R were a little too much like a snow tire: Review here

No problems in several inches of snow and they were comfortable on dry roads with a little noise.

The best snow tires I've owned that didn't feel like snow tires were my Vredestein performance snow tires on my '04 V70R. They were excellent.

Since you are going to be doing a lot of highway driving, I would look for a winter tire designed for the highway as well or else the ride will be rough.

I had really good luck with the Gislaved Nordfrost 5 tires on my S40. It was a stick with AWD but I lived in Maine and was always driving in snow storms - no problems. The tread on those tires is as aggressive as you would need but also smooth on the highway.

Other than that, try the the Nokian WR ones that Chris suggested.

      Re: (Big Will)

I'm not going to do the separate winter rims/tires and summer rims/tires because he won't have room in the car for a full set of tires/wheels plus his girlfriend and all their stuff and maybe a dog.

That's why I'm thinking just get the winter tires. he's planning on taking the southern route from Indianapolis to Mammoth, CA so I was thinking a tire with decent highway capability as well as snow. I'm thinking the conti extreme winter dws. I just put the blizaaks on my 525i wagon and they are pretty rough on the highway.

My girlfriend just put the conti extreme 16 inch on her vw jetta and thinks they are much nicer running than the 17 inch conti somethings that came on her car. I think she likes the softer ride of the side wall. They don't seem too noisy, but they are brand new. I think they are a nice looking tire and hope they grip in the snow.

thanks. i just had tire rack ship the conti extreme winter contacts to the dealer. The dealership wanted $135/tire and I said no thank you for the same tire!! I got them for $90 a pop and just shipped them to the dealer and will have them install them since it's already there getting a few things done.

I don't know what a WINTER DWS is but I am running the new Conti Extreme DWS on my R (16s) and on another Volvo with 17's and I love them in the dry and the wet.
How they are in actual snow will TBD as they came out last summer, no one knows yet

Good to know Jim. You sold me on the ContiExtremeContact years ago and I always loved that tire as an all season, so I figure the conti winter tires should perform well. The ones I got were not the DWS which I believe is the new tire. Not sure if that was even available in my size.
